Abstract Despite a long history of Chinese presence in Chile and the Americas, the Chinese tend to remain in a state of conditional visibility. Questioning the paradoxical ubiquity and invisibility of expressions of Chineseness in the physical and cultural landscape of Santiago, we examine cultural and discursive processes of (re)production that contribute to this scenario. Informed by understandings of identity and contextualized by the history of the Chinese presence in Chile, we consider the diverse ways in which Chinese people and Chineseness are portrayed on Chilean television and in films and theatre plays. We examine how these representations enable forms of subordination and silencing, and/or highlight the agency of Chinese persons. We show that while Chineseness and Chinese people are typically depicted as one-dimensional and incomprehensible, some productions visibilize and problematize such empty stereotypes. Finally, we demonstrate how these representations resignify Chineseness in a broader Latin American and global context.

Questioning the Conditional Visibility of the Chinese

Abstract Evidence of xiqu (“Chinese opera”) in the Philippines begins in the early 16th century, when the Catholic church sought to suppress it. Despite its longevity, Philippine xiqu has not featured much in the multidisciplinary study of ethnic Chinese in the Philippines, nor as part of the global turn in xiqu research. This article, attending to the history and contemporary practice of xiqu , situates the Philippines and especially Manila firmly in the Hokkien network of Chinese theatre, especially in the period between the late nineteenth century and World War II . The Philippines were, and remain today, an important node in xiqu dissemination, transfer, and transnational evolution, as well as an integral part of the culture of the Chinese in the Philippines. The Philippine case helps break down fundamental linguistic, ethnic, and religious equations surrounding xiqu , given the genre’s syncretism, ethnic ambiguity, and non-Chinese language environment.

Abstract This article analyzes the extent and limits of the Chinese Communist Party’s ( CCP ) revolutionary cosmopolitanism in Southeast Asia. Between 1945 and 1949, the CCP intellectuals Hu Yuzhi and Wang Renshu operated a network of leftwing newspapers in Southeast Asia’s major urban centers. They championed the revolution in the homeland, while supporting anti-colonial nationalist movements in the region. Taking a comparative approach, I argue that the CCP ’s revolutionary cosmopolitanism developed and diverged on the ground according to the diasporic community’s social structure, the contingency of events in the process of decolonization and initiatives taken by local CCP leaders. While the CCP in Jakarta turned neutral in the face of republican atrocities against Chinese, Singapore and Medan went on to mobilize merchants and youths to take part in local anti-colonial movements. The CCP stood for a moderate, anti-colonial Malayan nationalism in Singapore, in comparison with a more radical, non-assimilationist position in solidarity with Indonesia’s independence struggle in Medan.

Abstract Based on research done in the National Archives of Cambodia on the Sino-Cambodian newspaper Mekong Yat Pao and its literary supplements, this report has two main objectives: firstly, since the field of Sinophone literature in the Cambodian Kingdom has seldom been researched, to write a general introduction to the history of the newspaper and its historical context; and then to describe in detail the contents of the literary supplements, trying to understand their development according to a periodization through which one can follow the evolution of the dominant literary genres and the parallel political events of the 1950–60s in Cambodia and mainland China.

Abstract Based on oral histories and archival research in Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangzhou, this article focuses on identity and cultural formation among the descendants of overseas Chinese men and Latin American women. Some of the children and grandchildren of Chinese men and their wives in the diaspora have adopted Latin American identities even when they have never been to the region. While Chinese Latinos have created hybrid linguistic, cultural, and religious expressions, notions of Latin America have been central. Considering the myriad ways people have taken up Latin Americanness and integrated it into their mixed identities in Macau, Hong Kong, and southern China, this work explores what these experiences can tell us about the Chinese diaspora, return overseas migration, and the idea of “Latin America,” showing how Chinese Latino transnational families add to and complicate our understanding of the Latin American Chinese diaspora as well as southern China as a borderlands and contact zone.

Abstract This article offers a new perspective on the Straits Chinese public intellectual Lim Boon Keng (1869–1957) in historical context. Rather than analyze Lim’s relative Chineseness, it explores the development of his argument that a new civil religion was necessary for citizenship in the post-Enlightenment world before the rise of reform and revolution in China. It introduces the positions and the rhetoric of key protagonists in local debates in Singapore over governance, education, and religion, and analyzes the influence of global developments such as the expansion of Methodist mission schools, the American Student Volunteer Movement, James Legge’s translations of Confucian classics, and the first World’s Parliament of Religions in 1893. I argue that Lim, who wrote as “Isaiah” in 1896 to oppose proselytizing in publicly supported schools while courting his Chinese Christian bride, may be understood as engaging the world as a modern world citizen.

Abstract This research report argues that the promotion of a positive shared future for all humanity can be accomplished through dual-embedded transnational People’s Republic of China ( PRC ) Chinese social actors who are self-styled Sino-Thai folk diplomats making multiple contributions in countries both of origin and of residence. Conceptually, this research report remedies unilateral state-centric diplomacy, scarcity of intra-Asian Chinese migrant studies, the limited scope of non-state actors, dichotomous categorization of transnational Chinese, and an over-emphasis on exhibitive and pretentious unilateral exports in Chinese foreign policy. Through the research-based case study of a transnational Chinese residing in Bangkok, Thailand, this research report exemplifies the multiple folk contributions to both Thailand and China. As policy considerations, this research report proffers: (1) avoiding the generalization of Chinese transnationals in Southeast Asia; (2) appreciating the growing realm of social actors and their contributions; and (3) applying a sophisticated developmental perspective to domestic governance. Against rising protectionism, xenophobia, and precarious global challenges, this research report advocates a positive shared future for all humanity through the lens of Sino-Thai folk diplomacy.
