This study explores the conceptualization of love metaphors and linguistic images in German-speaking and Arabic cultures. Using George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s metaphor theory, the analysis focuses on two poems: Nizar Qabbani’s ‘Worte’ and Ingeborg Bachmann’s ‘Erklär mir, Liebe.’ Both cultures perceive love between man and woman as challenging. Qabbani’s poem portrays it as an illusion, while Bachmann’s poem presents it as inexplicable. Interestingly, the metaphors used in the poems are universally understandable, transcending cultural boundaries. Both poems depict love through its absence, revealing a shared desire for romantic love. Bachmann’s poem features yearning for an erotic dream, while the Arabic poem lacks a sense of future prospects. These observations suggest culture-independent basic concepts within love metaphors.

What has become a recognised component of German studies today in various varieties and theoretical concepts of “intercultural literature” is not as “new” as people often like to pretend. Goethe’s concept of “world literature” and Heine’s Franco-German writings are still without the theoretical concept, but in practice they are already in many ways what constitutes intercultural literature today. One author who has not yet received much attention in this respect is Theodor Fontane with his travelogues from England and Scotland, in which he attempts to convey to Germans images of a nation whose image was not exactly the best.

The study examines the uncompleted novel ,The Book of Franzaʻ (,Das Buch Franzaʻ, 1965–1966) written by the Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann. The attention is focused on the specifics of the topographical paradigms „center“ and „province“, categories „fictional“ and „real“, which form dichotomous pairs and reconstruct the space. The article investigates three main topoi, which, at the level of form, correspond to three chapters of ,The Book of Franzaʻ. The chapter ,Return to Galicienʻ presents the Carinthian province, ,Jordanian timeʻ – the Austrian post-war metropolis and ,The Egyptian darknessʻ – the desert of North Africa that balances the space specifics of the text.

The metaphors in a newspaper commentary about a football match are described and analysed using linguistic methods. The question should not be determined by a theory of metaphors. The metaphors are not only grasped according to their metaphorical concept, but rather their effect on the text and in the text is asked. It turns out that the ‘direct questioning of the text’, which must be theory-based, but not theory-driven, is far more productive than the initial description of the theory with a subsequent collection of confirmatory examples.

The topic of the tragedy ‘Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg’ by Franz Grillparzer is the turn of two historical epochs. The older one, positively seen epoch, whose attributes are the divine right of kings and universalism, is represented by the aging Emperor Rudolf. The new one, negatively viewed epoch, which is coming to the fore and whose attributes are individualism and particularism, is represented by several figures, including the emperor’s brother Matthias and his confidant, Cardinal Klesel. The aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between Matthias and Klesel and to show how the boundary between the master and his servant is blurred in this relationship.
