Water Distribution Networks (WDN) are important systems for industrial processes and urban centers. WDN can be formed by reservoirs, pipes, nodes, loops, and pumps and its complete design can be formulated as an optimization problem. The majority of published papers in the open literature use meta-heuristics for problem solution, as well as hydraulic simulators to calculate pressures and velocities. In the present study, a Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) model was developed to the synthesis of WDN considering the minimization of the WDN total cost, given by the sum of installation and operational costs, which is the novelty in the paper. All the hydraulic calculations were included in the model (mass and energy balances and velocity and pressure upper and lower bounds), avoiding the use of additional software. Reformulation techniques are applied to the model considering the use of logarithms and disjunctive programming. Two case studies extracted from real WDN were used to test the model and global optimization techniques were employed to achieve the results. The results obtained show that the operational costs play an important role in the WDN system design.

An MINLP model for the minimization of installation and operational costs in water distribution networks

The edible flowers have in their constitution proteins, lipids, starch, vitamins, important minerals for a healthy diet, as well as bioactive compounds recognized for their potential effects on human health. Due to the high perishability of the flowers, their marketing represents a challenge, and drying is a method that contributes to the preservation of the product. Given the above, the present study aims verify which is the curve that best adjusts to the mass loss during the dehydration process through the proposition of Boltzmann nonlinear regression model in face of classical dehydration curve models, as well measure in frozen flowers centesimal composition of Viola × wittrockiana flowers. The flowers were dehydrated at 30°C in an air circulation oven up to constant weight. The centesimal composition of the dehydrated Viola × wittrockiana is 84.69% humidity, 8.76% carbohydrates, 2.51% proteins, 2.41% crude fiber, 1.23% ash, 0.40% lipids and 48.68 Kcal. With respect to phenolic compounds, the frozen and dehydrated flowers showed 423 and 301 mg gallic acid equivalents per gram and, about antioxidant activity, showed 90.67 to 94.93% inhibition of the DPPH radical (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and 44.00 and 49.00 mg of Trolox.100 g-1. The Boltzmann model showed best fit the mass loss of Viola × wittrockiana and through this model the maximum mass loss occurs with 0.16 g, the maximum rate of mass loss of Viola × wittrockiana occurs in 46.7 min, whose mass loss is 0.66 g. The dehydration proved to be an efficient method to preserve the flowers because the bioactive compounds did not present significant losses after the application of this process.

Physical-chemical characteristics and modeling of the dehydration curve for Viola x wittrockiana mass loss

We characterized the spatial and seasonal distributions of different phosphorus fractions in surface sediments from the Furo of Muriá estuary by chemical fractionation. Five phosphorus species were successfully separated: phosphorus bound to Fe/Al oxyhydroxides (non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) ranging from 164.54 to 280.32 μg g-1), phosphorus bound to calcium (apatite phosphorus (AP) ranging from 63.02 to 102.80 μg g-1), inorganic phosphorus (IP, ranging from 227.21 to 378.61 μg g-1), organic phosphorus (OP, ranging from 30.33 to 135.88 μg g-1) and total phosphorus (TP, ranging from 257.54 to 507.73 μg g-1), in which 88% of TP is constituted by IP. Statistical results showed that seasonality was not a major factor influencing phosphorus concentrations. Considering the classification of estuarine sediment conditions, we can conclude that the TP concentrations found in Furo of Muriá do not yet indicate the risk of environmental deterioration.

Phosphorus concentrations in sediments from the equatorial Amazon estuary, Furo of Muriá, Pará State, Brazil

This study addresses the variations in surface temperature - Land Surface Temperature (LST) - in the urban network of the municipality of Paracatu, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, which has humid tropical climate of savannah (type Aw), and in the open pit mining activity located near its urban perimeter, between the years 1990 and 2019. The area was chosen because the municipality is the most important of its microregion, being an attractive pole of work due to the presence of several companies, with emphasis on the mining company Kinross Gold Corporation, which is one of the largest open pit mines and gold producers in Brazil. Images of LANDSAT-5 and 8 satellites were used, which underwent a resampling and standardization of pixels to become the same size. The satellite choice and the period of analysis was based on the beginning of mining activity in the municipality, and a year that was able to represent its current state. Subsequently, the LST calculations made available by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) were applied. When comparing the results of both areas of the first and last year of the series, there was an increase in the variation of the mean, minimum and maximum LST, a fact that is related with the suppression of vegetation for the growth of both areas. Such suppression, together with anthropic occupation, is responsible for one of the neighborhoods (28) that present the highest average variation of LST over the years. On the other hand, the neighborhood that presented the smallest variation on this parameter (47) was recently incorporated as a neighborhood in the city’s Master Plan because it is currently being occupied by the construction of an allotment, evidencing that the temporal variability of LST in the municipality occurs in relation to anthropic presence and its magnitude.

The influence of urban and mineral expansion on surface temperature variation

Medical image analysis is a significant burden for doctors, therefore, it is used to supplement image processing. Many medical images are assumed to be diagnosed as accurately as healthcare experts when the precision of image detection and recognition in an image processing approach matches that of a human being. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based predictive modelling is an important component of many healthcare solutions. This paper develops and implements a neural network-based method for skin cancer prediction to expose the neural network's strength in this field. This method determines which form of deep learning is best for diagnosing diseases with an accuracy exceeds human ability in terms of speed and accuracy, and determines the optimum number of layers and neurons in each layer for both Convolutional Neural network (CNN) and Deep Neural Network (DNN) to obtain the best possible precision. The results of the proposed method showed impressive results, especially for CNN. There is a clear superiority of CNN over DNN. The CNN (which relies on convolution filters) provides great results in extracting features due to the focus on the intended area of the image without the surrounding area region of interest. This led to a remarkable decrease in the number of parameters and the speed of attaining results with higher accuracy. The results indicated that CNN has a high accuracy rate compared with the other existing methods where the accuracy rate of CNN is 98.5%.

The utilization of dry yeast is increasingly becoming established in the brewing context, owing to the ease of storage and handling, the long shelf life and the convenience of dispensing a delicate and costly propagation process for fresh liquid cultures, which would need specialized labor and equipment. Dried yeasts undergo a procedure that removes nearly all liquid contents from the cell, and rehydration is then recommended prior to inoculation into the wort. Hydration is a nuanced procedure that allows yeasts to regain their vitality and viability, however, if carried out improperly, it can adversely affect fermentation. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of four hydration techniques on the viability and vitality of dry commercial yeast cells, preliminarily evaluating the influence of hydration using distilled and filtered water. Two different methodologies were employed, including the assessment of viability, by counting live and dead cells in the Neubauer chamber and the evaluation of vitality, by measuring the CO₂ released after inoculation. The hydration techniques tested included hydration in water without stirring, hydration in water with stirring, and these two techniques replicated in dry malt extract (DME) wort with Specific Gravity (SG) 1040. Firstly, it was found that rehydrating the yeast in distilled water has a negative impact on cell viability. Also, the results indicated that initial agitation has a negative effect on yeast viability and vitality, while hydration in water without agitation produced the best results. Correct hydration of dry yeast is crucial for avoiding off-flavors due to accelerated or delayed fermentation.

Evaluation of different hydration techniques on the viability of commercial dry brewing yeast

The global production of citrus fruits has expressively grown resulting in large amounts of residue. Orange residues are rich in carbon and could be used as substrates for production of biomolecules such as citric acid. In this study, wild and mutant Aspergillus welwitschiae strains isolated from Brazilian garlic were used to produce citric acid from orange residues, using solid-state fermentation. The results showed that the mutant A. welwitschiae UELAs 15.262/35 produced great amount of citric acid in the fourth day of solid-state fermentation using total and reducing sugars and producing cellulases. On the other hand, there was no production of citric acid by wild A. welwitschiae UELAs 15.262. The use of total and reducing sugars and the production of cellulases by A. welwitschiae UELAs 15.262 were detected, suggesting the use of carbon sources for the production of other metabolites. The great use of reducing sugars and cellulases production by A. welwitschiae UELAs 15.262/35 indicated the consume of carbon sources from the orange residue to produce citric acid at early times of fermentation. These findings lead to the possibility of biotechnological valorization of orange residues for acid organic production by A. welwitschiae strain.

Ohmic heating is a promising alternative method to conventional heating for microbial inactivation. This study aimed to inactivate Listeria monocytogenes and assess some quality parameters in ready-to-consume liquid infant milk treated with different voltage gradients of ohmic heating. Different ohmic heating voltage gradients (5, 10, and 20V cm-1) were applied to the samples inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes (ATCC 13932) for 5 minutes. The application of 20 V cm-1 ohmic heating induced inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes at 4 minutes and resulted in approximately 5.34 log reduction; however, there was no significant reduction for the 5 and 10V cm-1 groups. Moreover, 20V cm-1 ohmic heating application did not cause any changes in pH, L*, and b* values. A significant decrease in a* value and an increase in hydroxymethylfurfural value was noted in this group. In conclusion, the effectiveness of ohmic heating in pathogen inactivation depends on the applied electric field intensity and the application time. As a result, the ohmic heating conditions must be carefully determined for the infant milk to inactivate pathogens and ensure public health protection. The results of this study contain significant and beneficial data that can be disposed of the listeriosis risk associated with the consumption of infant milk in infants.

Inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-consume liquid infant milk treated with Ohmic Heating

Citriculture is one of the most important agricultural activities globally, with Brazil being one of the leading world producers. Thus, such activity is essential for the country's economy and the producers who depend on it. In this sense, the fight against Huanglongbing, one of the most devastating citrus diseases caused by vector insects, is essential to guarantee the quality of the fruit and avoid economic losses. The present work analyzed the counting of insect vectors in a commercial orange orchard in an observational study carried out in the municipality of Paranavaí, state of Paraná, Brazil, using the methodologies of generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) and generalized additive models for location, scale, and form (GAMLSS), with Negative Binomial probability distribution. Data were obtained by counting insects trapped in sticky traps at twelve fixed points in the orchard at three different heights and collected over seven fortnights. The results indicated that the GAMLSS model presented better results by including the linear predictor for modeling the scale parameter associated with the study factors based on the AIC criterion and diagnostic analysis tools.

Edible probiotic films incorporated by probiotics can be used to keep away from undesirable microbes on the surface of the cheese to improve its quality and promote beneficial effects on consumer health. In this study, flaxseed, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus acidophilus as probiotics were used to produce active edible packaging and evaluate its application in the sheep Sicilian cheese surfaces stored 10 days at 4°C. Microbiological, physicochemical, sensorial quality, antibacterial and antioxidant effects of cheeses were studied. The flaxseed mucilage-probiotic film improved cheese preservation by reducing the weight loss, preserving the pH and colour. Advantageously, flaxseed coating allowed improving probiotic viability throughout storage period. Native microbiota counts remained under safe levels. Probiotic coating cheeses exhibited 12.8±0.25 mm of maximum diameter inhibition against Listeria monocytogenes and enhanced oxidation (maximum DPPH inhibition: 51±0.33%) with acceptable sensorial properties for consumers. Hence, flaxseed mucilage probiotic film has proved to be suitable for quality preservation of functional foods.
