Observations on Eubaculites labyrinthicus (Morton, 1834) (Cephalopoda : Ammonoidea) from Madagascar

Sixty-five species of shallow-water Demospongiae (phylum Porifera) are described from seven localities on the west coast of South Africa, increasing the total species diversity for South Africa to 314. Of the 65 species collected, 43 are redescribed from fresh material and 22 are new to science. Seven species (16%) are apparent endemics for the west coast: Polymastia littoralis, Clathria (Clathria) conica, Clathria (Clathria) dayi, Lissodendoryx (Lissodendoryx) stephensoni, Ectyonopsis flabellata, Esperiopsis informis and Callyspongia (Callyspongia) tubulosa, and 22 new species are described: Craniella australis, Polymastia atlanticus, P. bouryesnaultae, Weberella namibiensis, Aaptos alphiensis, Protosuberites hendricksi, Tethya rubra, Halichondria (Halichondria) capensis, H. (Halichondria) gilvus, Hymeniacidon sublittoralis, Clathria (Clathria) omegiensis, C. (Thalysias) hooperi, C. (Axosuberites) benguelaensis, C. (Isociella) oudekraalensis, Antho (Acarnia) kellyae, Lissodendoryx (Anomodoryx) coralgardeniensis, Mycale (Aegogropila) tapetum, M. (Carmia) pulvis, M. (Carmia) levii, M. (Oxymycale) stephensae, Haliclona (Haliclona) urizae, Petrosia (Strongylophora) vulcaniensis. The west coast seems to have a high abundance of poecilosclerids. Sponges of this order are diverse and the results reinforce the supposition that many geographical areas and ecological habitats remain poorly known or even unexplored around South Africa. Brief zoogeographical comparisons are made between the west coast fauna and the fauna from adjacent regions such as Namibia and the Indo-Pacific.

Demospongiae taxonomy and biodiversity of the Benguela region on the west coast of South Africa

Ammonites of the family Pachydiscidae occur in rocks of Coniacian to Maastrichtian age in KwaZulu-Natal, and in the Santonian-Campanian Mzamba Formation in Pondoland, Eastern Cape Province. They are locally abundant in the Campanian and Maastrichtian. The following species are described: Tongoboryceras australis (Van Hoepen, 1955), T. subaustralis sp. nov., T. beantalyense (Collignon, 1952), T. cf. sornayi (Collignon, 1952), Raoceras koluturense (Stoliczka, 1865), R. elegans sp. nov., Eupachydiscus isculensis (Redtenbacher, 1873), E. grossouvrei (Kossmat, 1898), E. pseudogrossouvrei Collignon, 1952, E. haradai (Jimbo, 1894), Menuites (Menuites) hourcqi (Collignon, 1952), M. (M.) collignoni (Cooper & Greyling, 1996), M. (M.) spathi (Venzo, 1936), M. (M.) fresvillensis (Seunes, 1890), M. (M.) terminus (Ward & Kennedy, 1993), M. (M.) menu (Forbes, 1846), M. In the course of archaeological studies of one of the caves which make up the Klasies River main site, in the Tsitsikama region of the south coast of South Africa, a sample of collected material, dated to the Late Pleistocene (ca. 90 000 years), has proved to be rich in Anura (frogs). The families Pipidae, Bufonidae, Ranidae and Brevicipitidae are represented, and in addition there is a bone which belongs in the Heleophrynidae and two bones attributable to the Hyperoliidae, and an enigmatic vertebra.

Recent (2005) excavations at Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, have yielded upper Maastrichtian ammonites either not recorded or poorly known from previous excavations described by Klinger et al. (2001). These include Kitchinites sp. nov., Discoscaphites sp. and a fragment of a giant Diplomoceras cylindraceum (Defrance, 1816).

A new species of Escharinidae, Taylorius nyembezi sp.nov., is described and illustrated from material collected by the R.V. Meiring Naudé cruises at 90 m depth off the east coast of South Africa in 1979 and lodged in the collections of the Iziko Museums of South Africa, Cape Town and The Natural History Museum, London.The specimens were previously reported as conspecific with recent and fossil specimens from New Zealand and misidentified as Escharina waiparaensis (Brown, 1952) by Hayward & Cook (1983).Subsequently Gordon (2014) clarified the taxonomic status of the unique species that constitutes Escharina waiparaensis.In this paper we erect Taylorius nyembezi sp.nov., for the South African specimens based on its unique anter and sinus shape, metrics of its zooids and orifices, and the large size and position of the spine bases.

A new species of Taylorius (Bryozoa: Escharinidae) from the east coast of South Africa

Twelve species of deep-water cheilostome Bryozoa are reported from an incidental deep-water collection from the south coast of South Africa.The collection represents nine families and ten genera.One species, Arthropoma lioneli sp.nov., is new to science.The results reinforce the need for targeted sampling of South Africa's poorly known deep-water benthic fauna to assist the assignment of offshore marine protected areas within its Exclusive Economic Zone.With the addition of the new species, the bryozoan fauna of South Africa comprises no fewer than 271 valid marine species.

The Lower and basal Middle Albian ammonite Subfamily Lyelliceratinae Spath, 1921 is reviewed, and restricted to the genera Tegoceras Hyatt, 1903, Lyelliceras Spath, 1921, and Pseudobrancoceras Kennedy, 2004. An evolutionary origin in Brancoceratinae Spath, 1934 is proposed. The South American taxa from Colombia and Peru referred to Tegoceras, Lyelliceras, Prolyelliceras Spath, 1930b, and its synonym Ralphimlayites Etayo-Serna, 1979, are lyelliceratine homoeomorphs, derived independently from Brancoceratinae. The North African 'Prionotropis' radenaci Pervinquiere, 1907 is tentatively referred to Prolyelliceras, while 'Lyelliceras' flandrini Dubourdieu, 1953 is a further lyelliceratine homoeomorph subgenerically or generically distinct from Prolyelliceras. The following are described from KwaZulu : Tegoceras mosense (d'Orbigny, 1841), T. collignoni (Breistroffer, 1953), T. camatteanum (d'Orbigny, 1841), Lyelliceras lyelli (d'Orbigny, 1841), L. pseudolyelli (Parona & Bonarelli, 1897), L. latili sp. nov., and Pseudobrancoceras versicostatum (Michelin, 1838). On the basis of this revision, a sequence of four faunas are recognized, characterized, successively, by the presence of 1: Tegoceras gladiator and Aioloceras, 2: Tegoceras camatteanum; 3: Lyelliceras pseudolyelli, and 4: Lyelliceras lyelli, the appearance of the last-named marking the base of the Middle Albian Substage.

The cosmopolitan ammonite genus Douvilleiceras de Grossouvre, 1894, is the commonest ammonite in the Lower and lower Middle Albian in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Two variable, dimorphic species, D. mammillatum (Schlotheim, 1813) and D. inaequinodum (Quenstedt, 1849) are recognized, of which the majority of previously named taxa referred to the genus are regarded as synonyms.
