The environmental problems getting more chronic every day direct academics to design buildings considering the influence of nature. One of the most important methods of sustainable building design is biomimicry. The aim of this article is to examine the studies on the use of biomimicry in architecture, to raise awareness about sustainable building design and to create a guide for future researchers. It has been determined that most of the studies examined are in search of solutions for sustainable building design by examining nature. Studies on biomimicry, especially in architectural education, try to raise awareness to understand its importance in terms of sustainability by including this subject in architectural education instead of examining nature. The combination of simulation technique and field research technique is the most preferred method for the use of biomimicry in sustainable building design. It is thought that this study will be a guide on how to reveal the mysteries of nature for sustainable building design and the criteria that should be emphasized in order to reveal these mysteries. In addition, it is thought that it will create awareness about the use of biomimicry in architecture in sustainable building design

THE USE OF BIOMIMICRY IN ARCHITECTURE FOR SUSTAINABLE BUILDING DESIGN: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Sound can affect patients, staff, and visitors in healthcare settings in many ways. The purpose of this review was to synthesize and investigate sound in healthcare settings and the effects of these sounds. Relevant studies published between January 2017 and June 2022 were searched through a systematic literature review process using the Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Wiley Online Library databases. A total of 25 papers met the inclusion criteria. The study results cover three main areas: perceived sound sources and sound levels; associations between healthcare settings and sound; and sound’s effects on patients and staff. This study shows that in terms of sound, the environment in hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient centers is boisterous. Among other findings, associations were identified between sound and types of healthcare services; activities and behaviors; architectural features and materials; and mobile communication devices. Most studies report that sound has adverse effects on patients and staff, while nursing home-related studies report the positive attitudes of residents to musical activities. By evaluating the multiple sound-related solutions available, this review indicates that future research in this area should focus on the long-term effectiveness of interventions and the provision of standards of practice for optimal sound environments, based on different healthcare settings.

Numerous pedestrian bridges are the result of a car-oriented approach in the Tehran transportation network. Considering the vast maintenance costs and unacceptable functional efficiency, it is essential to change the planning approach from car to pedestrian in Tehran. This study attempted to the pathology of pedestrian bridges in Tehran and provide effective and timely policy solutions for them using the Content Identifying Method (CIM) and summarizing necessary measures from different studies. Solutions will be offered at different levels, from short to long-term solutions. This study concludes that pedestrian bridges should be re-evaluated in terms of location, design, continuous transportation network, and maintenance to improve quality of life. These solutions should be implied at the proper period with consideration of the needs of citizens and the existing issues of pedestrian bridges. They can be done based on management mechanisms by creating inter-sectoral coordination between related organizations and institutions.

Along with the times in various aspects, developments also occur in buildings where Muslims worship, namely mosques, especially in the rest area. Developments in factors of value and meaning that affect parts of the function are no longer a place of worship but also a place of temporary rest and commerce by residents around the mosque area. The impact of this phenomenon raises the assumption that there will be an increase in visitors at a particular time and space so that the mosque's capacity is not sufficient. One of the affected space elements is space circulation so that space users will have limited space. That raises the question of whether the circulation aspect will be affected by this phenomenon. As a response to this phenomenon, a design thinking approach is used at the empathize stage as an initial effort to find out the needs and desires of space users from problems that occur using participatory observation and structured interviews. The research results at this stage can obtain accurate and valid information through the analysis process to be defined at the next stage of design thinking. Design studios are where design students spend most of their time learning theory and practices. For this reason, thermal comfort conditions in studios are crucial to provide a suitable environment for education. Especially in the post-pandemic period, thermal comfort conditions have become more critical in educational buildings. The present study focuses on the adaptive thermal comfort condition in an architectural design studio in the Mediterranean climate of Izmir/Turkey. The study aims to evaluate the comfort conditions of the students and determine the effect of mask use on thermal sensation in the post-pandemic period. For this purpose, air temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity measurements were collected during the studio hours in the spring semester when the heating and cooling systems were not working. Additionally, a thermal sensation survey was conducted with 42 students. The results showed that the thermal comfort level was within the 90% acceptability limits according to the ASHRAE Standard-55. According to the survey results, the use of masks by the students did not have a significant effect on thermal perception.

The identification of breeding sites is key to dengue prevention strategies. Community involvement and breeding site surveillance play a vital role in controlling the Aedes population. Drones have emerged as a promising tool to be used in surveillance activities. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework and present comprehensive intervention methods to control dengue cases. This study explores the concepts of community engagement, habitat profiling and mapping, and technology integration that will be implemented in the three main phases. Phase I: Community engagement, in which to understand the implementation characteristics of the proposed system using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) and Human-Centred Design (HCD); Phase II: Profiling and mapping potential breeding sites, in order to compare and characterise vector breeding sites of the Aedes mosquito in selected urban and rural areas using innovative drone technologies; Phase III: Technology integration by developing automated linkage of information on the mapping of mosquito breeding sites for dengue risk to an application platform. This conceptual framework can assess the efficiency of drones as an alternative tool for dengue surveillance and the use of technology to locate breeding sites effortlessly, which can later be applied in dengue-endemic regions.

Many discussions have been devoted to the use of big data in architecture, particularly as atool for data predictive analysis. Interpretation of big data rules, however, is rarely discussed. This paper explores the use of big data as a basis for programming architectures. It emphasizes the use of big data in design beyond predicting the future. Instead, it is a descriptive resource that transcends rigid data dependencies. This allows architectural program development to become more flexible and adaptable. This study was conducted using exploratory qualitative methodology. A variety of sources in Google were used to collect the data. By using the tracing method, a rule inquiry is conducted. To gain a better understanding of how big data can be applied in architectural programming, a rules-based design exploration was conducted. Based on the results of this study, the following methods may be used to determine the rules: (1) data collection for reading patterns, (2) trace lines as a basis for discovering rules, and (3) exploration of rules as a basis for programming design. This case study explores the boatbuilding practices among boatbuilders (Tukang Timbal) in Terengganu, Malaysia, and their significance in preserving maritime heritage and craftsmanshipin ASEAN. By examining the techniques, materials, and cultural influences involved incontemporary boat construction, the research aims to document and analyse the unique practices of these skilled artisans. Employing a qualitative researchapproach, the study combines interviews, observation, and analysis of boatbuilding processes to uncover the knowledge andskills passed down through generations of boatbuilders in Terengganu. It investigates the factors that shape their practices, including local ecological conditions, cultural traditions, and modernadvancements in technology. The research emphasises the role of boatbuilders as culturalcustodians, highlighting the importance of their craftsmanship in preserving Southeast Asianmaritime heritage. By documenting their practices and understanding their cultural significance,the study contributes to the recognition and appreciation of this unique cultural tradition. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into contemporary boatbuilding practices inTerengganu, Malaysia. Examining the techniques and materials employed by boatbuilders,the research deepens our understanding of both the cultural and technological aspects of boat construction in ASEAN today. Ultimately, this case study sheds light on the boatbuilding practices among boatbuilders in Terengganu, Malaysia, contributing to the broader discourse on maritime heritage and craftsmanship in ASEAN. By documenting their unique techniques andmaterials, the study underscores the importance of preserving and promoting these traditionalskills in order to sustain cultural heritage in a rapidly changing world.

The construction industry is one of the primary sources of carbon emissions. In the context of the global response to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the impacts of climate change,China implements the Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutralisation policy. The policy vigorously promotes energy conservation and emission reduction in the construction industry, particularly housing. Due to the large stock of existing old multi-storey residential buildings in China, most of which are not energy-saving, and the lack of a sustainable assessment framework to retrofit such buildings, it is deemed essential to analyse the shortcomings of the current assessment standards and frameworks and formulate a better alternative. Therefore, this paper aims to provide the rationale for proposing a sustainability assessment framework for retrofitting old multi-storey residential buildings in China. It first explains the concepts of sustainable development and housing, then combs the current Chinese government’s commitments to sustainable housing agenda. The unsustainable state of this housing type is then reviewed, followed by the issues and gaps in the existing sustainable building assessment standards in China and overseas to justify the necessity of developing a sustainability assessment framework for retrofitting multistorey residential buildings in China. This framework would assist the retrofit of old multistorey residential buildings in reducing energy consumption, improving efficiency and achieving sustainable development. It also contributes to the body of knowledge in sustainable building assessments and helps in the planning and design processes within the public and private sectors related to the construction industry.

FEASIBILITY STUDY OF RETROFITTING ASSESSMENT FRAMEWORK FOR SUSTAINABLE MULTI-STOREY RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS: A CASE STUDY OF CHINA

This study investigates the impact of ambient sound on well-being, focusing on its definition, theoretical foundations, and cultural interpretations. The objectives are to explore and analyse underlying theories and concepts, and to examine cultural perceptions of ambient sound’s influence on human life. The researchers searched multiple databases, including JSTOR, PubMed, and Scopus, using keywords related to ambient sound and its synonyms. A total of 162 articles were examined and only 46 articles were included in the review. The results of this review proposed that definition of ambient sound highlights its role as the comprehensive auditory backdrop that shapes individuals’ perceptions, understanding, and experiences of a specific location, incorporating various elements such as natural sounds, background noises, and human-generated sounds. This definition underscores the significance of ambient sound in shaping the overall sonic atmosphere and cultural interpretation of a particular space. Additionally, the perception of environmental noise varies across cultures, and cultural factors influence the use and acceptance of noise cancellation technology and the significance attributed to natural sounds. Further research is needed to explore the potential benefit of ambient sound as a background sound within a various settings such as therapeutic environment.
