Background: In traditional histopathology, xylene is used as a clearing agent following haematoxylin and eosin (H&amp;E) staining of tissue sections. However, xylene presents significant health risks, prompting the search for safer alternatives. Essential oils, including cedarwood oil, have been proposed as potential replacements. This study evaluates the efficacy of cedarwood oil as a clearing agent compared to xylene. Aim: To assess the clearing effectiveness of cedarwood oil as an alternative to xylene in routine haematoxylin and eosin staining. Materials and Methods: Twenty paraffin blocks from routine biopsy specimens were used. Cedarwood oil, sourced from a local organic supplier, was tested alongside xylene. Paraffin sections (4 microns) from each block were cleared using either 8% cedarwood oil or xylene and subsequently stained with H&amp;E. The quality of staining was evaluated based on nuclear and cytoplasmic detail, clarity, and uniformity. Results: Cedarwood oil demonstrated a significant correlation with xylene concerning all assessed staining parameters. Conclusion: Cedarwood oil is a viable, eco-friendly, and safer alternative to xylene for use as a clearing agent in histopathological laboratories.

AN UPGRADATION TO MINIMIZE HAZARDOUS EFFECTS IN HISTOPATHOLOGICAL LABORATORIES: CEDARWOOD OIL AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO XYLENE

Objectives: Pyridinoline cross-linked carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP) is released during the breakdown of Type I collagen which is the primary event which happens in periodontitis. In this study, we primary intention is to find if ICTP biomarker can be used in the diagnosis of periodontitis. Materials and methods: 30 patients were included. On clinical examination, they were divided into 3 groups 10 healthy, 10 chronic periodontitis patients and 10 chronic periodontitis with diabetes patients. Unstimulated saliva was collected from these patients. Presence of salivary ICTP was assessed using ELISA and qPCR. Results: The highest ICTP levels were seen in Group 3 which is diabetes with periodontitis, followed by group 2 and group 1. A statistically significant difference was observed when ICTP levels were compared when Group 1 was compared with Group 3 and similarly with Group 2. Conclusion: Significant difference in the salivary ICTP levels between the gingivitis and periodontitis groups proved that ICTP can be used as a tool for the diagnosis of periodontitis.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage due to anterior skull base defect is considered a topical issue in otorhinolaryngology and neurosurgery. An abnormal relation between the nasal cavity, the sinuses and the subarachnoid space causes CSF leakage. The clinical manifestations, diagnosis, surgical approaches and results of treatments of two cases, spontaneous and tumor-induced CSF leakage, have been described in this work.

Collision neoplasm is when two different types of tumors affect the same organ. Collision tumors of the thyroid are extremely rare. This paper describes two cases of patients who had these mixed tumors. The first case is a 59-yearold male patient who presented complaining of mass that was growing for over a year. After a thorough investigation the patient was initially diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC) and thyroidectomy was performed, however further histologic evaluation of the gland revealed PTC and Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC). The second case was of a 21-year-old female who presented with a neck swelling for only a month. Radiograph showed two nodules of variable sizes on right and left lobes. After an FNA a diagnosis of PTC was made. The patient later on had a complete thyroidectomy. Histology of the gland revealed PTC in right lobe and Oncocytic carcinoma in left lobe. Since CT tumors are rare, the diagnosis could be challenging. Although, it is of great importance as in some cases the management depends on it. The reported cases here shed the light on the importance of careful and meticulous histological diagnosis, as the accompanied tumors with PTC were both incidentally found.

MALIGNANT COLLISION TUMORS OF THYROID: TWO CASE REPORTS

The compromised alveolar ridges preclude the placement of dental implants. The major problem with the regenerative procedures like block grafting, guided bone regeneration is flap opening during the initial healing period and exposure of the regenerative compartment. There is necessity for the tension free closure of the flap without relieving the periosteum or mucosa is required for the successful regeneration. The self-inflating osmotic tissue expander (Osmed) is used to expand the tissue prior to augmentation procedure. This report elaborates about the use of self-filling osmotic expander in severely compromised alveolar ridge defect cases (combined defect) prior to the augmentation procedure. The report concludes that the self-filling osmotic expander is a valuable tool in the efficient management of soft tissues prior to augmentation of severely compromised alveolar ridge cases.

SOFT TISSUE EXPANSION FOR TENSION FREE CLOSURE OF FLAP DURING GUIDEDBONE REGENERATION - A CASE REPORT

Objective: Traction of the impacted canine can be a very traumatic operation. Not only the transoperative phase, but also damage to the neighboring tooth can traumatize patients. The main objective of this paper is to report on the use of a three-dimensional (3D) printed guide planned virtually to allow the installation of an orthodontic appliance with minimal trauma to the surrounding soft and hard tissues. Methods: The methodology of the CARE guidelines was followed in the presentation of this technique presentation. A 22-year-old patient was subjected to an impacted canine traction using a 3D-printed surgical template. In addition to being effective in achieving a perfect traction vector, the neighboring tooth was preserved. Results: A printed guide is of great importance in reducing postoperative effects and operating time. Using a digital workflow can greatly aid traction on the affected teeth. Avoiding trauma to the neighboring tooth enables suitable traction, keeping the area of a bone or conjunctive tissue graft away. A digital workflow in creating a printed guide for these situations is suitable. While not a fast technique, advances in technology may soon reduce the time. Conclusion: Digital workflow planning and template printing is helpful in tooth traction, avoiding intercurrences and decreasing time of orthodontic treatment.

TRACTION OF IMPACTED CANINE WITH A SURGICAL TEMPLATE PERFORMED VIA A IGITAL WORKFLOW

The present paper discussed the treatment of a 13-year-old female having a Class III molar and canine relationships (C3M) in the right side and complicated by anterior and unilateral posterior crossbite in the left side. After discussing treatment plans with the patient, a unilateral extraction of tooth #44 to shift her midline and treat her right C3M canine relationship was scheduled. Crossbite elastics were used for her left from palatal side of maxillary posterior teeth to buccalside of mandibular posterior teeth. 2 years post follow up, correction of both the anterior and posterior crossbites were achieved, leading to enhanced functional occlusion and improved overjet and overbite measurements.

ORTHODONTIC CORRECTION OF ANTERIOR AND POSTERIOR CROSSBITES IN A CLASS III PATIENT WITH SINGLE TOOTH EXTRACTION – A CASE REPORT

Relevance: The apical third of the root canal is difficult to access for high-quality endodontic treatment due to the complex anatomical and morphological structure of this area, which includes anastomoses, extra canals, apical deltas, various shapes of the apical foramen. Based on this, the accomplishment of suitable mechanical preparation of the apical part of the root canal remains one of the most complex and important tasks for successful endodontic treatment. Aim: to evaluate the impact of mechanical preparation of the lower third of the root canal on the quality of endodontic treatment. Materials and methods: 30 extracted teeth (incisors, premolars, molars), which root canals had been mechanical and medicamentous processing, were examined. All teeth were divided into two groups based on the extent of apical preparation: up to №25 and №50 according to ISO. The root canal obturation was done with the technique of vertical condensation of gutta-percha. The X-ray diagnostics was used to control the quality of obturation. Teeth from each group that met the inclusion criteria were placed in a solution of methylene blue. Then, transversal cuts were received with a separation disc. The degree of dye penetration into the dentin of the root canal was recorded on these cuts. Results: The study results demonstrated that the adhesion of the filling material to the walls of the root canal was significantly worse in the first group of teeth (apical enlargement up to 25/04), compared to the second group (apical enlargement to 50/04). Conclusion: The root canal enlargement only to №25 according to ISO is not enough for the complete removal of contaminated dentin and the accomplishment of high-quality obturation. The suitable mechanical preparation of the apical part with large sizes allows do more thorough irrigation of the root canal and subsequent obturation, which is a keystone for successful endodontic treatment.
