Der Beitrag geht dem Themenkomplex Krankheit-Leiden-Schmerz bei Hermann Hesse nach, indem er einen Überblick über einschlägige Texte des Autors bietet. Gefragt wird nach Relationen zwischen Krankheit, Genie und Kunst in Prosatexten wie Taedium vitae, Gertrud, Kurgast oder Der Steppenwolf teils in Bezug auf Hesses Biographie, teils auf zeitgenössische Diskurse über (psychische) Krankheit oder Heilung, wie sie etwa bei Nietzsche oder Freud vorgeprägt waren. Es werden auch Verbindungslinien zwischen Hesses Auffassung der Krankheit als psychogenen Phänomens und seinem Kunstverständnis verfolgt. Schließlich werden die von Hesse etwa im Kurgast oder im Steppenwolf dargestellten psycho-physiologischen Heilungsprozesse ins Auge gefasst.

This paper examines the enduring relevance of William Blake’s poem “The Sick Rose” in the context of contemporary challenges, particularly the COVID‐19 pandemic. Despite its pre‐pandemic origin, the poem’s themes of hidden vulnerabilities, obscured intentions, and transient beauty resonate profoundly with current complexities. Through comprehensive analysis of symbolism, the study highlights literature’s adaptability in reflecting evolving human experiences. Slavoj Žižek’s book Pandemic!: COVID‐19 Shakes the World offers a lens to understand these themes, as it explores hidden threats, shattered illusions, global chaos, gradual transformation, and human frailty caused by the pandemic. This analysis magnifies the poem’s resonance, demonstrating literature’s power to mirror shifting human narratives. Ultimately, the research underscores the unbreakable connection between art and life, presenting “The Sick Rose” as a testament to the enduring interplay between artistic expression and the evolving contours of existence.

This article uses Mikhail Bakhtin’s concepts of chronotope and carnivalesque to offer a reading of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. The aim of this article is to explore the shared context that influenced the two writers and yielded ways of approaching the Soviet Union and its politics. Circumventing the state censorious practices and contesting the Stalinist regime rather in an indirect engagement, Bakhtin studied the satiric genres and identified the subversive power of the medieval carnivals in which a temporary suspension of temporal hierarchies is enacted in attempt to use history to discretely entice revolutionary sentiments in the Soviets. Similarly, not only to avoid the precarious repercussions of a direct engagement with British foreign diplomacy, Orwell’s chose the beast fable, which is intended to be satirical but also, as this article argues, in alignment with Bakhtin’s concept of the carnivalesque. It is not only employed in the form of the fable genre, but in the exercise of carnival rituals by the farm animals that take on the role of the humans to manage their affairs in a Marxist manner. Furthermore, this article examines the concept of chronotope to allow for creating an intricate relationship between space and time in a given reality and define a historical moment in the reality of the barn. It initially and satirically becomes a chronotope of utopia which does not last long to turn into a dystopian spatiality in which the fair and equitable society that has been earlier promised gets replaced by an authoritarian rule. This shows that Bakhtin’s concepts of chronotope and carnivalesque in Animal Farm move the dialects of capitalism and socialism to a satiric genre meant to transcend its value of universality.

Einige Literaturwissenschaftler bevorzugen den Begriff der „totalitaren Strukturen“, um die Strukturen in Thomas Manns Erzahlung Das Gesetz genauer zu beschreiben. Die Anwendung dieses Begriffs in der Literaturtheorie ermoglicht es, die Erzahlung mit den Ereignissen der Zeit zu verknupfen und darin die faschistischen und nationalsozialistischen Methoden zu erkennen. Da die Erzahlung im Amerika des Jahres 1943 entstand, wo Thomas Mann seit 1938 im Exil lebte und sich besonders mit den Geschehnissen in Deutschland und Europa auseinandersetzte, wurde sie insbesondere mit diesem in Deutschland entstandenen totalitaren Regime verglichen. Diese Arbeit untersucht die Frage, ob die umstrittenen Begriffe der „totalitaren Strukturen“ und der „totalitaren Humanitat“ fur ein sinnvolles Verstandnis von Thomas Manns Erzahlung Das Gesetz angemessen sind. Zudem werden diese Begriffe in Bezug gesetzt zur Humanitatsidee, die Thomas Mann nach Hitlers Machtergreifung formulierte. Insbesondere werden seine Essays herangezogen, die sich mit dem Thema der Demokratie und ihrer Bedrohung durch das Aufkommen faschis tischer Regime in Europa befassen. Diese Arbeit erforscht auch relevante Studien der Literaturkritik, die sich mit der Erzahlung Das Gesetz auseinandersetzen. Das Hauptanliegen besteht darin, eine Analyse der politischen Essays aus dieser Zeit durchzufuhren, sowie eine vergleichende Untersuchung der Essayistik von Thomas Mann und seiner Erzahlung Das Gesetz vorzunehmen. Durch diese Analyse soll ein genaueres Verstandnis seiner Weltanschauung und der Humanitatsidee jener Zeit erreicht werden. Um einen tieferen Einblick in die Intention zu erhalten, die Thomas Mann wahrend der Arbeit an der Erzahlung hatte, werden wir uns auch mit seinem Verstandnis der Begriffe Demokratie, Geist und Freiheit auseinandersetzen.

The Concept of Humanity and “Totalitarian Structures” in Thomas Mann’s Novella “The Law” and His Political Essays

托马斯·曼中篇小说《法律》及其政治论文中的人性观念与“极权结构”

A tanulmány témája az irodalmi álnevek egyik sajátos típusa, a klasszikus szerző nevét álnévként felhasználó, már a közlés pillanatában leleplezett posztmodern apokrif. Foglalkozik a Ki a szerző?, illetve a szerzői név pozíciójának elméleti kérdéseivel, továbbá kitér az álneves posztmodern magyar irodalom legfontosabb alkotásaira. A játékos posztmodern apokrifbe sorolható művek elemzése nyomán az a konklúzió fogalmazódik meg, hogy az álnév típusa egyúttal az értelmezésre is döntő hatást gyakorol, s ezáltal alapvető fontosságú, hogy az ide sorolható szövegek esetében az álnévhasználat sajátos módját is elkülönítsük.

Wilma Vukelichs Manuskript Der Mann auf der Brucke entstand 1955 in Zagreb, ein Jahr vor dem Tod der deutschsprachigen Schriftstellerin. Das im Titel eingeleitete Bruckenmotiv wird im Beitrag als literarisches Motiv und als Metapher fur reflexives Denken betrachtet, wobei auffallt, dass in der Literatur, Kultur und Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts das Uberlegen als bedrohte und fur das Menschliche an sich unabdingbare gedankliche Struktur hervorgehoben wird. Was schon als Problem in klassischen Stoffen wie dem Fauststoff zu finden ist, bekommt in politischen und sozialen Umwalzungen des 20. Jahrhunderts eine spezifische Auspragung. Die Grundlage dieser Lesart wird Clayton Koelbs Interpretation von Franz Kafkas Parabel Die Brucke entnommen und am Roman-Manuskript von Vukelich angewendet und erweitert. Dabei wird das analysierte Manuskript in Vukelichs Leben und Werk eingebettet und das Bruckenmotiv in all seinen Facetten ausgewertet. Letztendlich wird noch auf Hannah Arendts Konzept der Wahrheit in der Schwebe verwiesen, das als philosophische und praktische Umsetzung des erarbeiteten Bruckenkonzepts betrachtet werden kann.
