Past studies (Vance, 1979; Kawahara, 2012) of rendaku, a morphonological alternation in Japanese, have produced conflicting results about the sensitivity of Lyman’s Law to a locality effect in nonce words. In a large-scale forced-choice experiment with 72 stimuli, our analysis of the responses from 180 native speakers of Japanese shows that for many speakers, Lyman’s Law is indeed sensitive to a locality effect: in nonce words, the blockage effect of rendaku by Lyman’s Law tends to be stronger when the blocker consonant is in the second syllable than when it is in the third syllable. This finding supports Vance’s original insight. Then, to explore why Kawahara’s study failed to find a locality effect, we replicated it with a larger number of speakers, and found some evidence that the locality effect is identifiable in a naturalness judgment experiment as well.

This study provides neurocognitive evidence to shed further insight into the architecture of phonological representations. We tap into these representations by focusing on the neural processing of phonological alternations. Traditional generative accounts postulate abstract representations which are transformed by phonological processes into different alternants. Recent psycholinguistically-based frameworks posit that different alternants are listed in parallel in the abstract representation. Exemplar-based theories posit that alternation is a manifestation of frequency effects among concrete phonetic forms stored in memory. However, it is unclear the extent to which phonological representations of different levels of abstractedness are neurocognitive realities, beyond formal entities for linguistic analysis. This study tests the hypothesis that phonological representations are neurocognitive primitives that modulate speech processing and lexical access. We examined the processing of two surface-similar, but distributionally distinct lexical tone alternation patterns in Mandarin and Cantonese. With a cross-modal priming paradigm, differential neurophysiological components (LPC vs. N400) associated with the processing of alternation violations were identified cross-linguistically. Results support our hypothesis, suggesting that cross-linguistically distinct abstract phonological representations differentially modulate phonotactic detection, lexical access, and phonological restructuring processes. Results also lend theoretical insight into the multiform nature of the phonological representation, which encompasses both abstract and concrete levels of representations.

This paper investigates the effect of intonational rises on attention towards, and ultimately, recall of, medial elements in nine-digit lists in German. Non-final triplets (positions 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6) were produced with either a rise or a fall on digits in positions 3 and 6. Rises led to significantly improved recall over falls. Crucially, the nature and shape of the rise determined the position in which better recall was found. A pitch accent rise on specific digits (at positions 3 and 6) had a local effect on recall of those digits. A boundary rise, marking the end of a triplet, not only boosted recall of the specific digits but also boosted recall of the whole triplet. These results support a prosodic hierarchy in which edge tones areassociated with a whole domain (such as an intermediate phrase), rather than simply being placed at its edge, in accounting for the effect on recall of the digits within that domain.

Speakers modify their supra-laryngeal articulation on the one hand as a function of prosodic prominence and on the other hand as a function of speaking style. Articulatory movements are spatio-temporally expanded in words that are highlighted due to prosodic strengthening, but also in utterances that are produced in a loud speaking style. What remains unclear, to date, is how these two phenomena interact, or, in other words, how prominence relations are encoded in loud speech. In this paper, we use electromagnetic articulography to investigate lip and tongue kinematics and analyze selected acoustic parameters across several focus conditions in habitual and loud speech. Prosodic prominence relations are studied as the simultaneous strengthening of highlighted words and the attenuation of words in the background. The results show that prominence relations can be encoded multidimensionally in loud speech. Some modifications are even stronger in loud speech than in habitual speech, despite the general articulatory modifications associated with a loud speaking style. In both speaking styles, the attenuation of words in the background tends to be more robust than the strengthening of highlighted words. The paper underlines the flexibility of the multidimensional phonetic space in the encoding of prosodic prominence across varying communicative demands.

Contact is often cited as an explanation for the convergence of areal features and has been proposed as an explanation for the emergence of tonal languages in Mainland Southeast Asia. The current production study probes this hypothesis by exploring the relationship between tonal language usage and the acoustic correlates of the register distinction in Kuy, a Katuic language, as spoken in a quadrilingual (Kuy, Thai, Lao, Khmer) Kuy community in Northeast Thailand. The results demonstrate greater persistence of fundamental frequency (f0) differences over the course of the vowel alongside more tonal language experience for male speakers; however, analysis of individual differences finds that H1*−H2*, a correlate of voice quality, is the primary cue for male speakers with greater tonal language experience. For female speakers, a tradeoff is found between f0 and voice quality cues alongside tonal language experience at both the group and individual levels. These findings provide evidence for a model by which contact may serve to enhance existing, non-primary cues in a phonological contrast by shifting cue distributions, thereby increasing the likelihood that these cues will come to be perceived as prominent and phonologized.

This priming effect is boostedwhen segmental material overlaps between prime and target, but is robust evenwhen no material overlaps. This resultstands in contrast to previous stress-priming results, in which word-stressmatch only facilitates lexical access when prime and target overlapsubstantially in segmental material. Weargue that stress pattern is abstractly represented in the minds of speakers,independent of specific segmental phonetics.
