The purpose of this text is to reflect on the ways that science fiction allows criticism on the modern technology path. Imagination has allowed us to think of some ends of the world, but it has been a privileged space. Creating other possible futures for our relationship with energy is essential. Corporate renewable energy projects are emerging in corners of the planet where green capitalism has not yet reached. In this way, the creation of alternatives to centralized and corporate models of energy generation, distribution and consumption must go through new potentialities of inhabiting new possible futures. Science fiction is a literature genre that has inspired generations of people assembling art and techno-science as well as dystopia. Solarpunk has been consolidated as a space of counter-cultural hope to allow us to go beyond social-ecological injustices and growing epistemic and ontological violence. This genre is derived from other currents such as Cyberpunk, Steampunk and Dieselpunk, elucidating another relationship between technology, society and nature, nourished in turn by climate sci-fi, Indigenous and Afro-futurist science fiction. In this sense, a concept revision is made in three spheres: i) historical, based on its digital origins; ii) literary, based on the edited anthologies and iii) academic, of the reflections that it has raised. Finally, the Solarpunk Manifesto, revealed at the beginning of 2020, is shared in order to continue its co-creation.

Art, Energy and Technology: the Solarpunk Movement

Oil and water don’t mix: a common expression describing two things that do not usually combine well. In this paper I use this analogy to discuss some of the techniques and methods used within a Danish postgraduate engineering stream to merge the contested territory between Human Science, abductive thinking and Natural Science, logical preconceptions (Water &amp; Oil). The course was designed to help young engineers to step outside their normal positivist system of thinking and to explore, embrace or at least suspend judgement on various forms of emotional/meta-physical logic. Students were introduced to practical methods for developing deeper insight into specific human experiences and to apply this genuinely human-centred perspective to their 'engineered' solutions. The broader goal being, to help students to come to deeper understandings and appreciation of the people for whom they would propose design 'solutions'. The pedagogical process was intended to disrupt their preconceptions in such a way as to help them see many situations more clearly; a process of in-sight based engineering.

Andrea Ballestero es profesora asociada de antropología en la Universidad de Rice en Houston. Su trabajo busca entender las relaciones entre ética y técnica en espacios en los que es imposible separar la realidad en compartimentos delimitados por divisiones disciplinares. Así, se ha enfocado en comprender prácticas en las que se funden aspectos legales, económicos, y tecno-científicos, dando forma a lo que es posible en el mundo, pero también abriendo espacios cotidianos para la expresión de aspiraciones éticas para el futuro. En los últimos años, se ha centrado en estudiar el agua en sus múltiples formas, siguiéndola desde acuíferos hasta espacios burocráticos en los que se decide su futuro. &#x0D; Su primer libro, “Una Historia Futura del Agua” (A Future History of Water) explora la forma en la que se producen constantemente distinciones entre el agua como derecho fundamental y el agua como mercancía. Basado en trabajo de campo con funcionarios estatales, activistas y políticos en Costa Rica y Brasil, el libro gira en torno a cuatro artefactos técnicos: una fórmula, un índice, una lista, y un pacto. Usando el asombro como lente metodológico, el libro explora la forma en la que estos artefactos llevan inscritas ciertas posibilidades de futuro, incluso mientras parecen replicar estructuras del presente.

COVID-19 has exposed many fault lines in international development. As international staff were repatriated, the need to support communities with basics such as sanitation and hygiene once again fell to local organisations, who are often underfunded, in part because of the international development funding structures that are stacked against them. We argue that these structures lead to tokenistic partnerships, intervention design driven by short-term trends rather than the needs of communities, and ecological damage to the detriment of the very communities we claim to support. We argue that international development must take this opportunity to become more cognisant of and accountable for our carbon footprint, to develop new ways to support those organisations most closely linked to the communities they serve, to engage with the wider politics that has brought us to this point, and to commit to a future that redresses the inequalities of the past.

Nothing Normal About the New World: A Vision for Post-COVID International Development

Engineering education could facilitate the transformation of the engineering practice into one that centers social justice. Doing so could cultivate in engineers: (1) the practice of acknowledging and reconciling our history; (2) the value in co-designing with the community; (3) the ability to incorporate frameworks of justice in the engineering disciplines. This transformation will require a rethinking of the curriculum and the faculty expertise necessary to enact it. This paper discusses why the shift towards social justice is critical for the discipline while outlining a teaching praxis of social justice in engineering. In exploring this proposed praxis, we juxtapose how the status-quo of engineering education teaches sustainability against a ‘just sustainability’ that centers social justice. We conclude with a call to action for faculty and administrators to transform the engineering curriculum through an actively anti-oppressive socially just praxis of engineering to meet the needs of communities and society.

Pero, esta mañana, a diferencia de las otras 5000 que habré pasado a lo largo de mi vida, el sol ya no estaba ahí. Una sombra oscura era lo que veían mis ojos que poco a poco se llenaban de lágrimas como consecuencia del humo, el olor a concreto y la arena que inundaba todo el aire. Solo podía oír las grandes máquinas rompiendo, martillando y decidiendo con cada golpe el futuro de este pueblo. El concepto de autonomía tecnológica puede se revisado desde diferentes ángulos, aquí se propono hacer una revisión desde una experiencia de comunicación comunitaria en la Sierra Norte de Puebla: Tosepan Limakxtum. Desde el hacer la radio comunitaria y una organización cooperativa de largo aliento nos ofrecen miras a lo quer podría ser una autonomía tecnológica para la defensa del territorio y la identidad ante riesgos tecnocientíficos presentes y futuros.

Autonomía tecnológica: la experiencia de Tosepan Limakxtum en la Sierra Norte de Puebla

Transitioning towards renewable energy sources is crucial in mitigating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Global energy consumption is expected to increase 50 % by 2050, meaning one of today’s main challenges is complying with those demands without tampering with the uncertainties of global climate change. To address climate change renewable energy sources are essential and wind power plays a great role in the energy matrix. Brazil is one of the front runners in the energy transition, where wind power has expanded since the early 2000’s. The state of Bahia, in Northeastern Brazil, is currently the region where wind energy is expanding the most. However, conflicts related to territoriality and justice aspects are increasing in the state due to the fast-expanding wind energy sector. This study applies document and content analysis to explore the multiple narratives regarding the wind energy expansion in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Framing theory and theories addressing power struggles and conflicts in relation to the energy transition will guide the analysis of the documents included in the material. Based on the analysis of the Bahian case, this study shows that different actors frame the matter of wind energy expansion differently depending on their positionings. Civil society and local perspectives are not present in policies and decision-making processes, including the planning and installation of wind energy parks in the studied case. The results suggest that inclusion and participation of local actors, stakeholders and the civil society is essential to ensure a just and sustainable transition to clean energy sources.
