Chinese enterprises’ technology-sourcing overseas mergers and acquisitions (M&A) integration is an important force to accelerate the high-quality industrial development. However, the existing theories lack a thorough explanation of this mechanism. Based on four typical cases in Chinese manufacturing industry, this study applied a multiple-case study method to explore the relationships among the four basic categories of ‘resource relatedness’, ‘integration degree’, ‘innovation network position’ and ‘industrial technology innovation’ by in-depth interviews with enterprise executives and second data analysis. We find out that acquirers’ appropriate integration degree which matches different combinations of resource similarity and complementarity, will efficiently enhance centrality and structural holes of the acquirers in the global innovation networks, and thus promote home-country industrial technology innovation in the three functional areas of research and development (R&D), operations, and upstream and downstream activities. Based on resource-based view and by emphasising acquirers’ centrality and structural holes improvement in the global innovation networks as the crucial links, this study deepens the overall understanding of the entire process of enterprises using overseas M&A integration to promote the home-country industrial technology innovation and provides insights into the technological leapfrogging of latecomers from developing countries.

Absorptive capacity and appropriability depth are two concepts based on a firm's capabilities that leverage external knowledge to facilitate new product development performance. This study analyzes the joint effects of absorptive capacity and depth of appropriability regime forms on a firm's new product development. Specifically, we distinguished absorptive capacity between the potential and realized absorptive capacities and appropriability depth as formal and strategic forms. To test our research hypotheses, we analyzed empirical evidence from 311 Taiwanese service firms. The results reveal that the potential and realized absorptive capacities have significant effects that help explain a firm's new product development. Additionally, there are moderating effects of absorptive capacity on new product development performance. The formal appropriability depth exerts a positive effect on the relationship between the realized absorptive capacity and a firm's new product development. The strategic appropriability depth positively moderates the influence of the potential absorptive capacity on a firm's new product development. Finally, the study concludes that complementary nature of absorptive capacity and appropriability strength plays a critical role in contributing to new product development.

The study is aimed at highlighting the key features of the introduction of digital innovations in the practice of fashion industry enterprises. The study systematized information on digital technologies in the fashion industry based on statistical data and forecasts, as well as analysed the practical experience of implementing blockchain technologies and using digital tools in the field of marketing and fashion design on the example of China. An analysis of existing digital technologies in the fashion industry showed their significant impact on the industry. It turned out that blockchain, artificial intelligence, 3D modelling, and virtual and augmented reality technologies have significantly transformed traditional business processes in the fashion industry. Introducing these technologies has helped increase efficiency, reduce costs and improve user experience. It has been found that Chinese fashion enterprises have actively integrated advanced digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, virtual fashion shows into the fashion industry. Platforms such as Little Red Book have demonstrated the effectiveness of using these tools to improve marketing strategies and product design. The findings highlighted the importance of digital transformation for improving business processes and competitiveness in the fashion industry.

Digital transformation in the fashion industry: new horizons for marketing and fashion design

This study analyzes the factors influencing productivity within the Indian Automobile industry, specifically examining the component manufacturers and the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Utilising a dynamic panel data model, we assess the effects of lagged R&D stock, trade dynamics, and firm-specific factors on total factor productivity spanning the period 2000–2023. Our findings underscore the significant impact of a firm's lagged R&D stock, lagged export intensity and the import of embodied and disembodied technology in the industry. While lagged export intensity plays a significant role in improving productivity, with a greater impact on the OEM segment, the influence of technology imports differs across both segments. Specifically, OEMs benefit more from the import of embodied technology or capital equipment, while the component segment from disembodied technology or royalty payments and licensing. We also find that electric vehicle penetration has a significant positive impact on the productivity of the OEM segment alone, indicating that the benefits of the new technology do not have a visible impact on the industry as a whole. These results highlight distinct patterns in technological learning between the two segments, unveiling structural variations within the industry.

In the digital economy, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) establish digital platforms early in their operations to drive business model innovation. However, effectively utilizing diverse complementary assets through digital platform capability to achieve the intended business model design remains a significant challenge. This study classifies business model innovation into two types: novelty-oriented and efficiency-oriented. It constructs a theoretical framework grounded in digital platform capability and empirically tests it using data from 328 Chinese SMEs. The findings demonstrate that digital platform capability positively influences both innovation types, with generic and specialised complementary assets serving as mediators. Moreover, entrepreneurial orientation strengthens the relationship between digital platform capability and business model innovation. This research advances theoretical insights into digital platform capability and its role in fostering business model innovation, while providing valuable insights for building a business model innovation ecosystem specifically tailored to SMEs.

Unravelling firm performance in evolving markets: a capabilities approach to China's automotive sector

Culture as an informal institution plays an important role in technological progress. Despite being a crucial informal institution in China, the influence of Confucian culture on technological innovation has been largely overlooked. This study uses Confucian academies data from the Tang to Qing Dynasties (618–1911) and Chinese city patent data from 2000 to 2017 to examine the long-term impact of Confucian traditional culture on regional technological innovation levels from an informal institutional perspective. The study finds that Confucian culture enhances regional technological innovation. In terms of influence channels, Confucian culture directly and indirectly exerts a positive long-term influence on the level of regional technological innovation through the mechanism of improving social trust levels. Further analysis indicates that the role of Confucian culture in fostering technological progress is more pronounced in regions with limited Taoist and Buddhist influences, minimal foreign cultural impacts, and a robust legal environment. This research sheds light on the intricate mechanisms through which informal institutions impact technological innovation, offering valuable insights for theoretical exploration.
