Animal Biotelemetry

The comprehensive study of organisms is often hindered by the difficulty of consistently capturing, detecting, and tracking all life stages and age classes. This challenge is particularly pronounced for aquatic amphibians such as Siren intermedia (lesser siren), which can aestivate underground in dry burrows during extended droughts. In addition, obtaining year-round data on the habitat use, occupancy, and movement ecology of S. intermedia is notably difficult due to their cryptic nature, mobility, aestivation behaviors, trap-shy habits, and the impracticality of outfitting hatchlings and small juveniles with telemetry devices like subcutaneous Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags. Moreover, there is the lack of a non-physical method to distinguish retained tags from those that have been dropped. In this study, we developed a novel indicator to assess the field retention status of PIT tags inserted into the tail tissue of S. intermedia. This was achieved by analyzing individual spatial redetection patterns of 8- and 12-mm PIT tags inserted into juveniles and adults, respectively, over 2 years in a remnant Cypress–Tupelo swamp wetland complex in southern Illinois, using systematic dipnetting, trapping, and PIT scanning telemetry surveys. Tags were considered dropped if the average distance between subsequent scanned PIT detections after the first redetection was ≤ 5 m and if the distance between the second detection and final redetection location was also ≤ 5 m. We then examined PIT tag retention in relation to initial body size and marking parameters. Ultimately, 29% of the 8-mm PIT tags initially injected into juveniles with tail lengths (Tail) 46–84 mm were redetected at least once. Using our spatial–temporal PIT telemetry indicator, we found that 45% of the redetected PIT tags had been dropped by juveniles. In contrast, all three of the 12-mm tagged adults were redetected at least once, with movement patterns indicative of tag retention. Our findings suggest that 8-mm PIT tags are likely to be expelled from juvenile S. intermedia with a mean ± standard deviation (SD) Tail of 50.2 ± 2.8 mm. This study underscores the importance of determining appropriate size requirements and cutoffs for effective telemetry device application across different age classes of a species.

A novel indicator to assess PIT tag retention in an aquatic amphibian: impact of body size

Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags are widely used to track animal movements and survival. Rigorous testing protocols are necessary to ensure reliability in PIT tag performance and resulting data across various environmental conditions. This study aimed to document a comprehensive testing framework for PIT tags as a model for the broader biotelemetry community and to showcase how independent evaluations can validate the performance of new PIT tag offerings against established regional performance criteria. Independent testing and adherence to regionally applied standards were key components of this effort. The Voda IQ HQ12, HQ10, HQ9, and HQ8 PIT tags were evaluated through a series of independent tests, including assessment of physical dimensions, electrical parameter testing, and proximity evaluations. The HQ10 and HQ9 tags passed all performance criteria, while the HQ12 tag excelled in most areas but exceeded the region's maximum weight threshold by 0.0022g. Despite this, the HQ12 tag showed strong detection efficiency and read range, particularly in challenging environments like the Bonneville Corner Collector. The HQ8 tags, while showing a more limited read range, offer advantages in applications requiring minimal tag burden. Independent testing played a crucial role in validating the performance of these tags under established protocols. This study underscores the importance of rigorous testing for PIT tags to ensure reliability across diverse environmental conditions. Independent evaluations like these not only inform stakeholders, but also encourage the adoption of new technologies and vendors. The methods and results presented here offer a valuable model for testing new biotelemetry technologies, applicable across different species, ecosystems, and monitoring programs worldwide.

Independent testing of PIT tags for fisheries research: a framework for standardization and performance evaluation

Abstract Background The number of telemetry studies focused on lake whitefish ( Coregonus clupeaformis ) in the Laurentian Great Lakes has steadily increased over the last decade, but field tests of immobilization methods used for tag implantation, which have the potential to affect survival and behavior of fish after release, are lacking. We compared post-tagging survival and behavior of lake whitefish that were immobilized for tag implantation using electroimmobilization via a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit or by chemical immobilization via exposure to 10% eugenol. Results Acoustic tags were implanted into 126 adult lake whitefish ( N = 126; N = 67 TENS treatment group, N = 59 eugenol treatment group) collected from the Fox River, Wisconsin, during the spawning period in November 2021. We found no significant differences between treatments in the number of days that lake whitefish spent in the Fox River following tagging (TENS mean = 13.4 days, eugenol mean = 14.7), and also found that the proportions of fish within each treatment group that returned to the Fox River during fall 2022 (51% from TENS treatment group, 49% from eugenol treatment group) did not differ from the proportions for all fish that were confirmed to be alive at that time. The best Cormack–Jolly–Seber model indicated no differences in survival between the two treatment groups (monthly survival = 0.980, 95% CI 0.970–0.987). Fish immobilized using TENS underwent almost immediate induction and recovery from surgeries, while fish immobilized using eugenol had induction times that ranged 167–487 s (mean = 347 s) and recovery times that ranged 51–2358 s (mean = 1242 s). Conclusions Short- and long-term behavior (time to exit of Fox River, return to Fox River in the next spawning season) and monthly survival estimates of lake whitefish did not differ between the immobilization treatments. Either method may be suitable for immobilization during tag implantation, but the additional time needed for induction and recovery of fish when using eugenol may be a limiting factor in some field-based tagging situations.

Performance of a fine-scale acoustic positioning system for monitoring temperate fish behavior in relation to offshore marine developments

Despite considerable research on nest site selection of diamondback terrapins and the risks that coastal roads pose to populations of this obligate estuarine turtle, there are gaps in our understanding of movements and habitat use by female terrapins during the nesting season. In particular, movements within salt marshes, shallow water habitats, and nest site-adjacent developed habitats remain relatively understudied. To investigate habitat use and risk exposure of this semiaquatic species, we employed an automated radio telemetry system featuring 31 passive receivers. In 2021, concurrent with annual nest surveys, we tracked 60 telemetered female terrapins near a nesting area in southern New Jersey subject to impacts from road mortality. We triangulated terrapin locations based on the relationship between radio signal strength at each receiver and distance, generated utilization distributions using kernel density estimation, and classified habitat using multispectral imagery. We detected differences in habitat use versus relative availability within general (95% KDEs) and core (50% KDEs) use areas at a population level. Core use areas suggested more frequent use of salt pools, marsh, and upland habitats and less frequent use of developed and wide tidal creek habitats than expected based on availability alone. To further characterize variability in habitat use, we compared selectivity between terrapins grouped by proximity of their capture location to a road. Terrapins nesting closer to the road showed relatively more frequent usage of developed habitats and less frequent usage of narrow creeks and regularly flooded marsh throughout the nesting season. Patterns of habitat selection across all terrapins underscore the importance of shallow water habitats such as salt pools near nesting areas. Individuals tended to spend more time in habitat types close to their nesting locations, such that terrapins initially captured near roads spent more time in high-risk developed areas throughout the study period. Road mortality risk may not be homogenous within this nesting population, which may be a critical consideration for demographic modeling. This study expands our understanding of terrapin movements while demonstrating the effectiveness of a novel radio telemetry approach, and contributes to conservation planning in a rapidly changing salt marsh landscape.
