Almost 15 years have gone ever since the discovery of graphene as a single atom layer. Numerous papers have been published to demonstrate its high electron mobility, excellent thermal and mechanical as well as optical properties. We have recently seen more and more applications towards using graphene in commercial products. This paper is an attempt to review and summarize the current status of the research of the thermal properties of graphene and other 2D based materials including the manufacturing and characterization techniques and their applications, especially in electronics and power modules. It is obvious from the review that graphene has penetrated the market and gets more and more applications in commercial electronics thermal management context. In the paper, we also made a critical analysis of how mature the manufacturing processes are; what are the accuracies and challenges with the various characterization techniques and what are the remaining questions and issues left before we see further more applications in this exciting and fascinating field.

Graphene related materials for thermal management

Abstract Transition metal dichalcogenide nanoscrolls (TMD-NSs) exhibit unique optoelectronic properties due to their spiral tubular structures. In this study, we successfully fabricated WSe2 nanoscrolls with various morphologies, illustrating the evolution from planar to nanoscroll via an internal strain-driven rolling process. The anisotropic optical properties of the nanoscrolls were systematically analyzed by angle-resolve polarized Raman spectroscopy. For nanoscrolls with different rollup angles, the strain distribution is manifested by the variation of Raman intensity on the linear axis. In addition, the on/off ratio and detectivity of device based on bilayer nanoscroll reach 5.3 × 104 and 2.63 × 109 Jones, caused by the ultralow dark photocurrent. In summary, our study demonstrates a universal method for producing polymorphic products, demonstrating that bilayer WSe2 nanoscrolls hold significant potential as a platform for fundamental research and technological applications.

Universal production of anisotropic bilayer WSe2 nanoscrolls for high-performance photodetector

Abstract Suitable electrothermal materials with high heating rates at low electric power are highly desirable for de-icing and thermal management applications. Herein, 3D epoxy resin/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composites are synthesised and shown to be promising candidates for electrothermal heaters where the MXene serves as a nanoheater and the epoxy resin spreads the heat. A unidirectional freeze-casting technique was used to prepare an anisotropic Ti 3 C 2 T x aerogel into which epoxy resin was then vacuum infiltrated and cured. The resulting composite showed an excellent Joule heating performance over repeated heating–cooling cycles. A steady-state temperature of 123 °C was obtained by applying a low voltage of 2 V with 5.1 A current, giving a total power output of 6.1 W cm −2 . Such epoxy/MXene aerogel composites, prepared by a simple and cost-effective manner, offer a potential alternative to the traditional metal-based and nanocarbon-based electrothermal materials.

Realization of 3D epoxy resin/Ti3C2T x MXene aerogel composites for low-voltage electrothermal heating

Abstract As one of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have sparked enormous potential in next-generation electronics due to their unique and excellent physical, electronic and optical properties. Controllable growth of wafer-scale 2D TMDs is essential to realize the various high-end applications of TMDs, while it remains challenging. Herein, 2 inch 2D WS 2 films were successfully synthesized by ambient pressure chemical vapor deposition based on substrate engineering and space-confined strategies. WS 2 nucleation density can be effectively modulated depending on the annealing conditions of sapphire substrate. The thickness of WS 2 films can be controllably fabricated by adjusting the space-confined height. Moreover, our strategies are demonstrated to be universal for the growth of other 2D TMD semiconductors. WS 2 -based photodetectors with different thicknesses were systematically investigated. Monolayer WS 2 photodetector displays large responsivity of 0.355 A W −1 and high specific detectivity of 1.48 × 10 11 Jones. Multilayer WS 2 device exhibits negative self-powered photoresponse. Our work provides a new route for the synthesis of wafer-scale 2D TMD materials, paving the way for high performance integrated optoelectronic devices.

Controllable growth of wafer-scale two-dimensional WS2 with outstanding optoelectronic properties

Polyaromatic carbon is widely held to be strongly diamagnetic and hydrophobic, with textbook van der Waals and 'π-stacked' binding of hydrocarbons, which disrupt their self-assembled supramolecular structures. The NMR of organic molecules sequestered by polyaromatic carbon is expected to be dominated by shielding from the orbital diamagnetism of π electrons. We report the first evidence of very different polar and magnetic behavior in water, wherein graphene remained well-dispersed after extensive dialysis and behaved as a 1H-NMR-silent ghost. Magnetic effects dominated the NMR of organic structures which interacted with graphene, with changes in spin–spin coupling, vast increase in relaxation, line broadening and decrease in NMR peak heights when bound to graphene. However, the interactions were weak, reversible and did not disrupt organic self-assemblies reliant on hydrophobic 'π-stacking', even when substantially sequestered on the surface of graphene by the high surface area available. Interacting assemblies of aromatic molecules retained their strongly-shielded NMR signals and remained within self-assembled structures, with slower rates of diffusion from association with graphene, but with no further shielding from graphene. Binding to graphene was selective for positively-charged organic assemblies, weaker for non-aromatic and negligible for strongly-negatively-charged molecules, presumably repelled by a negative zeta potential of graphene in water. Stronger binders, or considerable excess of weaker binders readily reversed physisorption, with no evidence of structural changes from chemisorption. The fundamental nature of these different electronic interactions between organic and polyaromatic carbon is considered with relevance to electronics, charge storage, sensor, medical, pharmaceutical and environmental research.

NMR detects molecular interactions of graphene with aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons in water

Abstract Electrical magnetochiral anisotropy (EMCA) refers to the chirality- and current-dependent non- linear magnetoresistance in chiral conductors and is commonly interpreted in a semiclassical picture. In this work, we reveal a quantum geometry origin of EMCA using a chiral rectangular lattice model that resembles a chiral organic conductor (DM-EDT-TTF)2ClO4 studied for EMCA recently and exhibits symmetry-protected Dirac bands similar to those of graphene. Compared to the semiclassi- cal term, we find that Dirac states contribute significantly to EMCA via the quantum metric when Fermi energy is close to the Dirac point. Besides, we discover that a topological insulator state can emerge once spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is added to our chiral model lattice. Our work paves a path toward understanding quantum geometry in the magnetotransport of chiral materials.

Electrical magnetochiral anisotropy and quantum metric in chiral conductors

Abstract As the limitations of silicon-based technologies approach their physical boundaries, monolithic three-dimensional integration (M3D) and two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), have emerged as promising solutions for continuous scaling in semiconductor devices. This perspective explores the evolution of van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy and its potential to integrate TMDs into M3D structures. By circumventing lattice mismatch issues, vdW epitaxy allows the formation of high-quality single-crystal heterostructures across diverse material systems. However, the challenge of achieving films with uniform thickness control remains unresolved. Herein, advanced epitaxial growth techniques for TMDs are reviewed, including quasi-vdW epitaxy, vdW recrystallization, and remote epitaxy, whilst also introducing emerging approaches, such as hypotaxy and interfacial epitaxy. These emerging techniques have the potential to produce large-area defect-free films with controllable thicknesses. Ultimately, the development of new epitaxial methods specifically designed for TMDs is essential for the future integration of 2D materials into industrial applications.

van der Waals Epitaxy and Beyond for Monolithic 3D Integration

Abstract MXenes possess a range of exceptional properties that can be harnessed in catalyst design for thermal and photocatalytic reactions. Herein, we share our perspective on how these properties can beexploited to address challenges in different catalytic reactions, thereby highlighting the potential of the material in catalysis. For thermal catalysis, key properties include their layered structure, reducibility of their surface, partial oxidation ability, basicity/acidity, and electrophilicity. In photocatalysis, MXenes exhibit beneficial properties such as transparency, electrical conductivity, tunable Fermi level, photo-corrosion resistance, and plasmonic resonance. Two fundamental characteristics that underpin MXene’s superiority over many other traditional catalysts are the tunability of its properties to meet specific application needs and the low dimensionality of its structure, which enables nanoscale phenomena to be harnessed. While reasonable progress has been made in this field, we assert that the potential for MXenes in catalytic applications is vast and largely underexplored. As we mark a decade of MXene research, we anticipate significant advancements in their catalytic applications, positioning them as key materials for future breakthroughs in this field.&amp;#xD;

MXenes: Exploiting their Unique Properties for Designing Next-Generation Thermal Catalysts and Photocatalysts

Abstract We investigate the interplay between vertical tunneling and lateral transport phenomena in electrically contacted van der Waals heterostructures made from monolayer MoS 2 , hBN, and graphene. We compare data taken by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy to results from room-temperature conductive atomic force spectroscopy on monolayer MoS 2 with sulfur vacancies and with varying hBN layers. We show that for thick hBN barrier layers, where tunneling currents into the conductive substrate are suppressed, a side-contact still enables addressing the defect states in the STM via the lateral current flow. Few-layer hBN realizes an intermediate regime in which the competition between vertical tunneling and lateral transport needs to be considered. The latter is relevant for device structures with both a thin tunneling barrier and a side contact to the semiconducting layers.

Abstract The van der Waals MnBi 2 Te 4 (Bi 2 Te 3 ) n family, encompassing MnBi 2 Te 4 (n=0), MnBi 4 Te 7 (n=1), MnBi 6 Te 10 (n=2), and MnBi 8 Te 13 (n=3) etc, has attracted considerable interest owing to its intriguing combination of intrinsic magnetism and non-trivial band topology. This unique blend offers a fertile ground for investigating the engineering of magnetic states and the interplay between magnetism and topology. A comprehensive understanding and manipulation of their magnetic properties in both single-crystal bulk and two-dimensional (2D) forms are imperative for the advancement of applications in quantum technology. This review presents an extensive overview of recent experimental and theoretical inquiries into the magnetic characteristics of MnBi 2 Te 4 (Bi 2 Te 3 ) n (n=0, 1, 2, 3) spanning from the bulk to the 2D realm. It delves into intrinsic and defect-related magnetism and its modulation under diverse external fields. The elucidations provided herein aspire to enhance the understanding of magnetic phenomena in magnetic topological insulators, underscoring the potential for tailoring magnetic states to propel future quantum devices.
