Essential oils have long been attracted as substitutes for synthetic chemical pesticides because of their antimicrobial properties, low mammalian toxicity and wide public acceptance.Essential oils of lemongrass and cinnamon leaf were encapsulated using chitosan, a biodegradable polymer by emulsion formation/ionotropic gelation technique.A. flavus was isolated from stored rice.In-vitro antifungal efficacy of oil loaded microcapsules against A. flavus and its time profile were determined.Based on morphological and molecular characteristics the fungus was identified as Aspergillus flavus.Both lemongrass and cinnamon leaf oil and their respective microcapsules were fungicidal against A. flavus.The Minimum inhibitory oil load of lemongrass and cinnamon leaf oil microcapsules were 0.5 g and 0.75 g respectively.Lemongrass showed a comparatively higher activity than cinnamon against the test fungi.However, cinnamon possessed the antifungal activity for a longer duration than lemongrass.Encapsulation of oil within chitosan may effectively reduce the evaporation rate of oil thus increasing its bioavailability.Microcapsules of cinnamon and lemongrass oil have the potential to be developed as a natural fungicidal formulation to control A. flavus.

ANTIFUNGAL PROPERTIES OF CHITOSAN MICROCAPSULES CONTAINING CINNAMON OIL AND LEMONGRASS OIL AGAINST ASPERGILLUS FLAVUS ISOLATED FROM STORED RICE

This aim of this work is to evaluate the adsorptive properties of carbon-based beta-cyclodextrin adsorbent towards Methylene Blue (MB) and Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) removal from water.The specific surface area of adsorbent is small (0.1 m 2 /g), with intact structure of pristine beta-cyclodextrin upon treatment.MB reaches relatively fast equilibrium (100 min), while RO16 needs more than 2200 min, despite a lower removal capacity of the former.Also, the adsorbent displays a greater affinity for MB.The kinetics data obeyed pseudofirst-order, suggesting the physical interaction of host-complex inclusion.On molar basis, the adsorption capacity of RO16 is 1.26 × 10 -2 mmol/g (32 %), while that of MB is 6.8 × 10 -3 mmol/g (20 %) at C o = 3.4 × 10 -2 mM.To conclude, carbon-based beta-cyclodextrin is a promising adsorbent candidate for selective dyes removal from wastewater.

Samarium substituted cobalt ferrite CoFe 2-x Sm x O 4 with concentration of x = 0, 0.05 and 0.15 were prepared using conventional solid-state ceramic method.Prepared samples first calcined at 900 o C for 4 hours and then sintered at 1150 o C for 4 hours.The X-Ray powder diffraction data analysed to identify the phases present in the crystalline ceramic.An additional phase of Sm-Fe-O was observed for the sample at x = 0.15.Lattice parameter, strain and saturation magnetization found to be decreasing whereas crystallite size and coercivity found to be vary with samarium content.Decrease of Curie temperature attributed to the decrease of exchange interaction among tetrahedral or octahedral ions due to samarium content.

INVESTIGATION ON MAGNETIC PROPERTIES AND CURIE TEMPERATURE OF SAMARIUM MODIFIED COBALT FERRITE

Ferroelectric-Ferrite composite with composition (x) Li 0.5 Fe 2.5 O 4 + (1-x) BaTiO 3 (for x= 0, 0.20 & 0.40) were prepared by the conventional sintering technique at 900 o C for 4 hours.Presence of two phases is further confirmed by x-ray diffraction analysis and lowering of c/a ratio show incorporation of ferrite in ferroelectric compound.Dielectric constant decreases with increase in ferrite content indicating lowering contribution due to interfacial polarization.An increase of Curie temperature with increase in ferrite content suggests an increase of material stability in high temperature region.

VARIATION IN DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES OF COMPOSITE CERAMICS: LITHIUM FERRITE SUBSTITUTED BARIUM TITANATE

In this study, the hydrophobic flocculation behavior of lignite coal obtained from Beyşehir region in Turkey and the effect of some parameters were investigated.These parameters were selected as pH, amount of dispersant, amount of binding liquid, flock growth time, stirring speed, flocculation time and solid ratio.The ash content (ash, %) and combustible recovery (CR, %) of the flocks obtained as a result of the experiments were determined.As a result of the studies, the optimum pH value (3), amount of sodium silicate (1 mL), amount of waste motor oil (3 mL), flock growth time (1 min), stirring speed (1250 rpm), flocculation time (2 min) and solid ratio (5 g) were determined.The hydrophobicity of fine coal grains was increased by using waste motor oil.According to the hydrophobic flocculation results of coal grains, flocks with 17.03% ash content and 99.06% combustion recovery were obtained.While the contact angle of the original coal was 44°, it was observed that the contact angle of the obtained flocks reached 117°.It was determined from experiments that the surfaces of the coal grains have a very high hydrophobicity.As a result, clean coal with a reduced ash content of 53.22% was obtained.

CLEANING OF BEYŞEHİR (BAYAVŞAR) COAL IN TURKEY WITH HYDROPHOBIC FLOCCULATION USING WASTE MOTOR OIL

The communication focuses on the alkylation of hydroxybenzaldehydes by chloroacetic acid to introduce a carboxyl group, and investigates the reactivity of the resulting compounds with semicarbazide and malonodinitrile under acidic or alkaline conditions. Successful alkylation of some hydroxybenzaldehydes with chloroacetic acid was carried out with yields 20-67%. The work demonstrates an effective approach to modifying existing aldehydes to introduce new functional groups, with potential applications in the synthesis of aromatic and heterocyclic compounds for use in various industries.

The synthesis of 4-aryl-2-(N-methylpiperazin-1-yl)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylium perchlorates has been accomplished by the acid catalyzed heterocyclocondensation of the corresponding substituted phenacyl N-methylpiperazin-1-carbodithioates. The later have been obtained from the reaction of various substituted -bromoacetophenones with a salt of N-methylpiperazine carbodithioic acid. The structures of new synthesized N-methylpiperazine derivatives have been proved by analytical and spectral data.

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by progressive cognitive decline and neuronal loss.Amyloid beta peptide consisting of 39-42 amino acids is prone to aggregation forming oligomers and amyloid plaques which are considered causes of neurotoxicity.One of the most studied strategies for preventing betaamyloid aggregation is relying on the hypothesis that non-covalent bound substances may reduce the aggregation of beta-amyloid.Considering previous studies which demonstrate the formation of non-covalent complex between beta-amyloid (1-40) and beta-cyclodextrin using a denaturing chemical environment and considering the results regarding beta-cyclodextrin presence in the rat plasma and in organs after administration of certain medications containing beta-cyclodextrin the present study aims to evaluate the interaction of beta-cyclodextrin and beta-amyloid (1-40) at neutral pH in ammonium bicarbonate.The analysis was performed using an electrospray-triple quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled to a liquid chromatograph using the flow injection analysis technique.Additionally, the cleavage using trypsin of the beta-amyloid (1-40) peptide after non-covalent complex formation was performed for the purpose of identifying the minimal peptide sequence involved in the interaction with beta-cyclodextrin.The results indicate the formation of the non-covalent complex in the chemical environment employed.Further studies using transgenic Alzheimer's Disease mice models expressing human beta-amyloid may clarify whether oral administration of beta-cyclodextrin has beneficial effects to the health of Alzheimer's disease patients.

ELECTROSPRAY MASS SPECTROMETRY EVIDENCE FOR THE NON-COVALENT COMPLEX FORMATION BETWEEN BETA-CYCLODEXTRIN AND BETA-AMYLOID (1-40) PEPTIDE AT NEUTRAL pH

Bacteriorhodopsin (BRh), which is present in the cell membranes of the archaeon Halobacterium salinarum, harvests light wave energy which causes conformational changes in this retinal protein leading to the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by ATP synthase. Since some protons are released during light-induced excitation of BRh molecules, the chemiosmotic hypothesis advanced by Peter Mitchell was used to explain the ATP formation by translocation of protons across the simple membranes of H. salinarum. However, protons can be released as a result of photoexcitation of some molecules, and these protons are only responsible for increasing the acidity (pKa) of their solutions; therefore, the protons released by BRh probably have no role in ATP production. In contrast, the 138 nm spectral shift between the two photointermediates, L550 and M412, corresponds to an energy amount of 17.41 kcal/mole, which can be successfully absorbed by ATP synthase as near-infrared radiation (NIR). The conformational changes of F0 ATP-synthase can induce the rotation of F1 ATP-synthase, which is associated with the removal of ATP molecules already formed by F1 ATP-synthase from ADP and inorganic phosphate. The NIR radiant energy can thus be confusingly associated with proton release and not with direct light-induced ATP formation. The already proposed mechanism of ATP production by BRh-ATP-synthase system is supported by a large body of literature data. However, such data that contradict old theories can be interpreted in the light of new understandings of living organisms. Therefore, a new perspective on ATP production in biological systems from the simplest to higher organisms is required.

BACTERIORHODOPSIN - THE SIMPLEST BIOENERGETIC SYSTEM FOR ATP PRODUCTION

The utilization of spectrophotometric methods for the determination and analysis of proteins is of great interest as they are generally simple, rapid and with high sensitivity. These protein assays have many uses in the food, plant breeding, pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, as well as in forensic science and a variety of other research fields. Among these, the biuret method is highly sensitive and is widely used in clinical and biological laboratories. However, the use of copper sulphate in the traditional biuret method of protein identification can lead to substantial interference from copper ions. In this framework, we modified the traditional biuret method by using an alkaline-alcohol reagent and insoluble copper phosphate; the protein-copper complex could also be evaluated at 545 nm. In addition, aliquots of the same solution are treated with specific reagents to determine two essential amino acids; tryptophan reacts with glyoxylic acid and lysine is treated with a ninhydrin-based reagent. Calibration curves must also be made at three wavelengths, with absorbance values in relation to the concentration of each component measured by standard methods. The advantage of this new approach is that it requires only 50 mg of ground seed meal to quantify three different components in each sample.
