This paper examines and compares mechanisms for finding Pareto optimal solutions to a many-to-many allocation problem. By explicitly introducing preference ordering and providing linear programming representations of the allocation problem, we study serial dictatorship and competitive matching with simultaneous choices, which is basically a generalized Nash equilibrium problem, and show that under certain conditions this Nash equilibrium allocation is also Pareto optimal. We examine the ability of our mechanisms to provide Pareto optimal allocations, and compare the solutions obtained from the different mechanisms. In addition, the allocation methods are applied to a many-sources, many-users water allocation problem, and the benefits associated with serial dictatorship or competitive allocations are compared.

This paper considers a dynamic game problem related to pollution management. The planning time is distinctly segmented into the phases of pollution discharge and natural pollution recovery periods, following the natural growth rule. Throughout this process, multiple agents jointly exploit a single resource. The behaviors of participants with both noncooperative and coordinated strategies are studied to establish a ratio between the values of discharge and recovery periods for achieving sustainable pollution level. As an illustration, a dynamic pollution discharge problem with multiple participants and an integrated planning timeline is also investigated.

Assessment of discharge pollution and recovery periods within dynamic resource management systems

Crop residue burning in the Indian subcontinent poses a significant environmental and public health threat. We present the 'Farmer's Game, ' a novel game-theoretic model capturing the strategic choices farmers face regarding residue management. The model incorporates individual profit motives, social pressure dynamics, and government intervention through reward and punishment schemes. Analyzing the model reveals that while social pressure can encourage cooperation, it may not be sufficient to achieve substantial pollution reduction. A consequence of the model is that strategically designed government policies offering moderate rewards for non-burning and modest penalties for burning can effectively incentivize environmentally friendly practices. Recognizing the model's limitations and the need for further research, we emphasize its potential to illuminate the complex interplay between individual motivations, social dynamics, and policy options. By understanding these interconnected drivers, we can design more effective interventions to promote sustainable agricultural practices and mitigate air pollution in the Indian subcontinent.

Farmer's game: A game theoretic approach towards burning of crop residue

Research on the origin and evolution of language often takes the approach of simulating models of how individual human populations communicate with each other. The naming game, one of those models, represents the process by which agents aim to form a shared vocabulary through communications. We propose CLNG that adds the elements of concept and communicative vagueness to the naming game; by using CLNG to simulate language evolution, we analyze the impacts of vagueness in communication on language evolution. Our results suggest that vagueness generates synonyms in a language and reduces the amount of shared knowledge needed by an entire population. Since CLNG is a communication model that focuses on communicative vagueness, it is expected to be able to quantitatively analyze the level of vagueness in organizational communication to determine how much vagueness is sufficient for smooth communication.
