Emerging Adulthood

The characteristics of Western societies pose significant challenges to how emerging adults view their futures. In the present study, we analyzed the associations between romantic attachment, self-regulation, and future expectations of emerging adults controlling the sex and age of participants. More specifically, we analyzed the moderating role of goal-setting, decision-making, and learning from mistakes (self-regulation dimensions) in the links between trustful, dependent, avoidant, and ambivalent romantic relationships and future expectations. The sample, collected by convenience in Portugal, includes 571 emerging adults (76.2% were female and 23.8% were male) aged between 18 and 30 years ( M = 23.31; SD = 3.35). Our results indicate significant associations between trust, dependent, avoidant, and ambivalent romantic relationships, with different dimensions of future expectations. Findings indicated that goal-setting moderates the association between dependent and avoidant romantic relationships and pessimism. We discuss these findings based on attachment theory, considering the relevance of emotional bonds and self-regulatory processes in future planning.

Romantic Attachment and Emerging Adults’ Future Expectations: Moderation Role of Self-Regulation

Background/Aim: Little is known about how emerging adults explore, negotiate and consolidate the meanings of their identities in peer interactions. This study examined the recurrent construction of identity claims within everyday interactions in the pursuit of local conversational goals. Methods: Six emerging adults were paired in dyads for three video-recorded conversations about ‘dating, romance, and sex’. Transcripts of the interactions were analyzed using Iterative Micro-Identity Content Analysis. Results: Recurrent identity claims included operations on identity content at three different levels. These real-time processes facilitate the formation and modification of socially relevant identity categories. Conclusion: Identity exploration may emerge from the immediate social business of everyday interactions, in which emerging adults both actively and passively contribute to the development of identity content. We highlight the tension between agency and constraints driving identity development. Future research should address the link between real-time identity processes and more long-lasting psychosocial outcomes.

“I’m Totally Different”-Developmental Processes Underlying the Recurrent Construction of Identity Content Within Everyday Interactions.

Despite the increasing depression diagnoses and the frequent origin of later-life (mental) illnesses during this period, surprisingly scarce research for Germany addresses emerging adulthood, and particularly health implications regarding social milestones like school-to-work transitions. To address this gap, we aim to investigate the relationship between school-to-work transitions and Health-related Quality of Life (HRQOL), using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel 2002–2017. The findings reveal slight associations between school-to-work transitions and HRQOL. Successful completion of out-of-school education is positively associated with both mental (MCS) and physical (PCS) HRQOL, predominantly among women. For labor market entry, a modest increase in MCS is observed primarily among men. These results suggest slightly positive associations between school-to-work transitions and HRQOL of emerging adults in Germany. While short-term health implications seem limited, potential heightening effects from cumulative transitions or long-term consequences remain unobserved and call for continued attention on emerging adulthood in life course research.

Exploring the Impact of School-To-Work Transitions on Health-Related Quality of Life in Emerging Adulthood Using the German Socioeconomic Panel (GSOEP)

Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) emerging adults in the United States experience mistreatment inside and outside healthcare settings, which may contribute to known mental health and substance use inequities. The purpose of our study was to examine associations between provider and healthcare setting mistreatment with past 30-day severe psychological distress, illicit substance use, binge drinking, and past year suicidal ideation among TNB emerging adults (18–25 years; N = 10,203) who sought healthcare in the previous year. In sociodemographic-adjusted, multivariate, logistic regression models, all mistreatment types were associated with worse mental health and illicit substance use. Structural interventions to improve interdisciplinary healthcare providers’ attitudes and knowledge, combined with inclusive healthcare policies are needed to ensure TNB emerging adults are treated with respect and dignity.

Healthcare Mistreatment is Associated With Psychological Distress, Suicidality, and Substance Use Among Transgender and Nonbinary Emerging Adults

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on emerging adults is of global concern. We examine changes in depressive symptoms, physical symptoms, and sleep-wake problems from before to during the pandemic among college students, and examine inequalities by gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and race (N=263, 52% Black, 48% White, 53% female). As compared to pre-pandemic levels, increases were evident in depressive symptoms, physical symptoms, and sleep problems. Females had greater increases than males in depressive symptoms, sleep problems, and physical symptoms. Students from disadvantaged SES backgrounds had greater increases in physical symptoms. Among White students, those from disadvantaged backgrounds also had greater increases in sleep problems. Lastly, daytime sleepiness increased more among Black male than White male students. Overall, findings suggest notable shifts in sleep and health during the early phase of the pandemic among emerging adults, and that attention to inequality by gender, SES, and race is warranted.

Changes in Depressive Symptoms, Physical Symptoms, and Sleep-Wake Problems From Before to During the COVID-19 Pandemic Among Emerging Adults: Inequalities by Gender, Socioeconomic Position, and Race

The purpose of this study is to analyze parenthood expectations (expected age to have a first child and number of children hoped for) in emerging adulthood, and how these expectations can be predicted by various sociodemographic factors. We draw on theoretical work on emerging adulthood, marital paradigms, and marital horizons theories in conceptualizing parenthood expectations, including one’s parenting horizon. Using a large, national sample of emerging adults in the U.S., we used a latent profile analysis to examine expectation groups. We also found that parenting salience, religiosity, and marital salience were the most consistent predictors of parenthood expectations. In addition, we also found that race and relationship status may also be important factors to consider when it comes to the parenthood expectations that emerging adults have. Our study expands our understating of how emerging adults conceptualize the salient transition to parenthood.

Planning for Parenthood: Using Sociodemographic Characteristics to Predict Expectations for the Timing and Number of Children Among Emerging Adults

In an era marked by polarized political landscapes, understanding the mechanisms of political socialization among emerging adults in Minnesota provides critical insights into the formation of political identities. This study explores political socialization among young adults in Minnesota, focusing on the impact of family, peers, and personal experiences across diverse social positionalities (i.e., race/ethnicity). Utilizing thematic analysis of 41 interviews (M age = 21.8, 73.2% Female, 70.7% affiliated politically as Democrats), we identified key themes in political socialization for young adults in Minnesota, including familial transmission (i.e., from parent to child), trickle-up socialization, limited socialization and emphasis on values , reciprocal and selective peer socialization, and personalized political socialization processes. Highlighting the nuanced role of social positionality, the research underscores young adults’ active participation in shaping their political beliefs, suggesting the importance of inclusive and adaptable political engagement strategies to accommodate diverse experiences and perspectives in democratic participation.
