Indeed, in the current context it is more important than ever to involve society in the work undertaken at universities and research centres.One of scientists’ main goals is to get their research results across and make both the scientific method and the ins and outs of science comprehensible to a wider public. As part of their communicative endeavour, researchers are also exploring other ways to reach out to society beyond the traditional media.

«The question of the origin of life is one of the fundamental problems of science.» Few would disagree with this statement by the Russian biochemist Alexander I. Oparin, pioneer in the scientific study of the transition from inanimate matter to the primitive forms of life. The naturalist and evolutionary approach to the problem of the origin of life on Earth enabled the experimental study, but it is amazingly complex, so it is impossible to tackle the issue from a single scientific discipline. Therefore, what we see is the paradigm of multidisciplinary studies, one that interests astronomers, geologists, chemists, physicists or biologists and can require observation and experimentation, as well as computational simulation and theoretical speculation. That is why, even if we do not create a comprehensive list, we should add mathematicians, computer scientists and philosophers to the army of scholars interested on the emergence of the earliest forms of life.

On the origin of life. An incomplete scientific story

The scientific community has reached an ample consensus about the existence of climate change and its causes; one of the most extensive in the history of science. Scientists agree that the Earth is heating up, primarily as a consequence of human action, which causes drastic global changes: a rise in the sea level, increased frequency and force of heat waves, droughts, and other extreme weather events. These changes have consequences for living beings, including people’s health. That is the reason why science warns of the need to take measures to mitigate its effects and adapt life to a different world.

Science, on the other hand – especially Science with a capital letter – aspires to the purity of objective and aseptic knowledge, conveyed with transparent language. It could even rise as a proud Babel over the dispute, become a sort of successor to religion as dispenser of security.

El aceleramiento en el desarrollo tecnológico trae ciertos retos y dudas sobre el mantenimiento de las herramientas y los datos. ¿Tenemos que aceptar que los datos digitales dejarán de ser útiles en algunas décadas? En este artículo se dan algunas soluciones concretas como el uso de repositorios, la aplicación de los principios FAIR o el uso de formatos estándares como XML-TEI. Pero en un tenor más general, se argumenta por mantener la mirada histórica de las humanidades y las bibliotecas y realizar una crítica humanística y cuantitativa de los aspectos digitales.

Silk played a crucial role in driving progress in Europe, particularly along the network of production and market centres along the Western Silk Road. The silk trade not only facilitated the exchange of ideas and innovations but also had a huge impact on the economic, technical, functional, cultural, and symbolic levels. However, silk heritage has become critically endangered, despite the existence of many specialised European museums dedicated to its preservation. These museums often lack the resources and capacity to utilise state-of-the-art digital technology. The objective of this paper is twofold: to introduce SILKNOW, an interdisciplinary project funded by the H2020 Program of the European Union to preserve and promote the heritage of silk textiles, and to present the project results which were possible thanks to digital humanities.

Weaving the past into the future

This paper proposes a research agenda to study cultural networks that assumes their role both in making meaning and as adaptative tools for humans and their communities. First, the agenda grounds the study of cultural networks in Whitehead’s (1861–1947) metaphysics of process, posing that cultural networks emerge during human’s production of relations with the world of phenomena. Then, the paper identifies two approaches to studying cultural networks, reassembling them or generating them. Thirdly, it contextualizes the importance of understanding cultural networks vis a vis the consolidation of the digital humanities in the academic domain, and the productivity of networks as tools to explore the cultural in networked domains of human experience. The final remarks locate the proposed research agenda within the context of multidisciplinary research on cultural analytics.

However, much is still to be understood about the processes that make language even possible and those that shape its evolution. Recent computational advances have enabled us to address these issues from new angles. This article highlights methods and findings that the age of computation has given rise to, from learning from large-scale data from thousands of languages to the evolution of languages created by artificial intelligence.
