Abstract Thermal spray coatings have the advantage of providing thick and functional coatings from a range of engineering materials. The associated coating processes provide good control of coating thickness, morphology, microstructure, pore size and porosity, and residual strain in the coatings through selection of suitable process parameters for any coating material of interest. This review consolidates scarce literature on thermally sprayed components which are critical and vital constituents (e. g., catalysts (anode/cathode), solid electrolyte, and transport layer, including corrosion‐prone parts such as bipolar plates) of the water splitting electrolysis process for hydrogen production. The research shows that there is a gap in thermally sprayed feedstock material selection strategy as well as in addressing modelling needs that can be crucial to advancing applications exploiting their catalytic and corrosion‐resistant properties to split water for hydrogen production. Due to readily scalable production enabled by thermal spray techniques, this manufacturing route bears potential to dominate the sustainable electrolyser technologies in the future. While the well‐established thermal spray coating variants may have certain limitations in the manner they are currently practiced, deployment of both conventional and novel thermal spray approaches (suspension, solution, hybrid) is clearly promising for targeted development of electrolysers.

Application of Thermal Spray Coatings in Electrolysers for Hydrogen Production: Advances, Challenges, and Opportunities

Abstract 3D Porous carbon‐based materials are well known for their excellent mechanical and electrochemical properties for various energy storage applications including Li‐ion Battery (LIB) anodes. However, their commercial application is limited due to their low theoretical specific capacity. Heteroatom doping in carbonaceous networks proved an efficient way to modify the surface properties, which considerably improves the Li intake capacity and Li diffusion in porous carbon materials. In this work, we have synthesized 3D honeycomb boron carbon nitride (HBCN) from boric acid, glucose, and cyanamide. Silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) are used as structure‐directing agents to replicate well‐organized honeycomb structures. HBCN possesses a high specific surface area (SSA) of ∼597 m 2 g −1 , with a uniform porosity distribution, low charge transfer resistance, and steady Li flux. When analyzed as an anode material for LIB, HBCN demonstrated an excellent specific capacity of ∼652 mAhg −1 and 408 mAhg −1 at an input current density of 100 mAg −1 and 1 Ag −1 respectively and an energy density of 227 Wh kg −1 at 1 C rate in a full cell LIB. These results indicate that the doping of B and N hetero atoms is significantly advantageous for LIBs application.

Honeycomb Boron Carbon Nitride as High‐Performance Anode Material for Li‐Ion Batteries

Abstract The charge‐transport behavior of nanostructured titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is of great interest because of the wide range of applications. In this work, we demonstrate a facile approach to improve electron transport in TiO 2 nanorods (NRs) by introducing niobium (Nb) dopant into the lattice of TiO 2 . The TiO 2 ‐NRs doped with Nb were grown directly on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates by a facile hydrothermal method and used directly as the photoanodes for water oxidation. The TiO 2 nanorod electrode doped with 0.25 % of Nb showed 65 % improvement in photocurrent as compared with the pristine TiO 2 nanorod electrode. Furthermore, by simply changing the light illuminating direction, the improvement of charge transport induced by Nb doping could be easily identified.

Abstract Although arsenic and its compounds are mainly known as a poison, they also found applications as drugs in medicine. However, their distribution in a therapeutic dose is often problematic due to their high toxicity. One possibility how to address this issue is utilizing drug‐delivery systems. Herein, we report on a metal‐organic framework (MOF) called Zn‐MOF‐74, which comprises Zn(II) ions and 2,5‐dihydroxybenzene‐1,4‐dicarboxylate ligands, as a drug nanocarrier of arsenic trioxide. We synthetized the material in a nanoparticle formulation and showed that due to the open metal sites in Zn‐MOF‐74, it was possible to load the material with a high amount of the As(III)‐drug (in a form of arsenous acid). Moreover, we also investigated the drug release at different pH values. Noticeably, we observed that the As(III)‐release was pH‐triggered and was faster at pH 6.0 than at pH 7.4. Therefore, we suggest Zn‐MOF‐74 as a model example of a MOF containing open metal sites for controlled drug loading and delivery.

Herein, we report vertically aligned In2S3 coated ZnO nanotube arrays deposited on p‐GaN substrate by wet chemical method. The fabricated device based on In2S3/ZnO/p‐GaN heterostucture structure displays an enhanced photoresponse with self‐driven operation. The device based on ZnO/p‐GaN structure coupling with In2S3 nanoparticles exhibits bias selectable photodetection by detecting UV and UV/visible light through bias voltage modulation. This strategy can benefit to fabricate broadband photodetector based on ZnO/GaN structure.

Bias Selectable Dual Band Detectors Based on Vertically Aligned In2S3‐coated ZnO Nanorod Arrays Grown on p‐GaN

A highly versatile and efficient Zr‐MgAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst has been developed via coprecipitation technique for the transfer hydrogenation of levulinic acid/ester to high‐value γ‐valerolactone (GVL). Detailed state of the art characterizations of the as‐synthesized catalysts involving the structural, compositional, morphological, and surface area analysis was carried out to determine the relation between the physicochemical features and the catalytic activity. The proposed reaction protocol has been optimized by altering various reaction parameters, such as catalyst amount, temperature, time, and different hydrogen sources to obtain the maximum yield of GVL. In addition, kinetic studies were performed to gain deep insights into the role of Zr in catalytic action along with the reaction kinetics, and the activation energy of the thermocatalytic process. The synthesis of GVL from renewable biomass resources promotes circular economy and carbon neutrality, paving the way for future research towards the sustainable production of green solvents.

Bifunctional Zr‐MgAl Layered Double Hydroxide Catalyst for Sustainable Transfer Hydrogenation of Ethyl Levulinate to γ‐Valerolactone

Hydrogels are widely utilized in biomaterials, medicine, and food science due to their versatile properties. This study developed a ferulic acid (FA) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) hydrogel within a polyacrylamide matrix, polymerized using ammonium persulfate and crosslinked with N‐methylenebisacrylamide. The FA@CNC hydrogel demonstrated exceptional tensile ductility and elasticity. Antibacterial evaluations against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus revealed significant efficacy, with activity increasing proportionally to FA concentration. Swelling studies indicated a maximum equilibrium swelling ratio of 1210% after 36 h, showcasing the hydrogel’s ability to undergo substantial expansion while maintaining its original shape and structural integrity. It was indicated that the synthesized hydrogels were capable of absorbing large volumes of exudate while preserving a moist environment conducive to accelerated wound healing. Scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed a regular and dense microstructure, which contributes to the hydrogel’s mechanical stability and robustness. The optimized preparation process developed in this study resulted in hydrogels with significantly enhanced performance. These findings underscore the hydrogel’s superior mechanical and functional properties, paving the way for innovative applications across biomaterials, medical, and food‐related industries.

Fabrication of ferulic acid‐cellulose nanocrystal enhanced stretchable and antibacterial hydrogels

This study highlights the importance of exploring BiCrTe nanocomposites to uncover their distinctive properties and potential applications. Three BiCrTe samples were synthesized using hydrothermal methods by varying the concentrations of Bi and Cr while maintaining a constant Te content. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the presence of Bi₂Te₃ and Cr₂Te₃ phases, supported by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. A reduction in Bi content led to smaller crystallite sizes. Raman spectroscopy revealed characteristic vibrational modes associated with Bi₂Te₃ and Cr. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) confirmed the nanoparticle‐like morphology of the composites. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provided detailed surface composition and electronic structure data, verifying the presence of all constituent elements. UV‐Vis spectroscopy demonstrated a blueshift in absorbance with decreasing Bi content, with bandgap (Eg) values ranging from 3.31 to 3.61 eV. This increase in bandgap correlated with a reduction in refractive index (n). Nonlinear optical (NLO) studies revealed two‐photon absorption behavior, along with a positive nonlinear absorption coefficient (β), third‐order susceptibility (χ (3)), and refractive index (n2). These findings indicate that BiCrTe nanocomposites hold significant promise for advanced optoelectronic applications.

Hydrothermally Synthesized Bi‐Cr‐Te Nanocomposites With Enhanced Nonlinear Two‐Photon Absorption

In order to design high‐efficiency electrocatalysts for the development of urea oxidation reaction (UOR)‐based energy conversion and storage systems, herein, a very facile and kinetically controlled material growth strategy has been strategized to prepare extremely uniform and perfectly hexagonal sponge‐like NiO‐NiCo2O4 with high BET surface area (126 m2 g−1) and monomodal distribution of mesopores (~3.9 nm). The in‐depth electrochemical analyses demonstrate rich redox reversibility, high UOR current density, very‐low charge transfer and series resistance, and typical Warburg response indicative of facilitated diffusion of electrolyte ions during electrocatalytic UOR. The NiO‐NiCo2O4 requires lower overpotential for effective UOR and exhibits minimal current loss for prolonged duration. Proposedly, the multiple oxidation states of Ni and Co in NiO‐NiCo2O4, combined with its rich physicoelectrochemical physiognomies, offer lowly‐impeded electrolyte ion intercalation‐deintercalation, good electronic conductivity, higher number of accessible redox active sites, facile adsorption of urea on the electrocatalytic sites and inhibition in the blockage of active sites by side products to augment the overall UOR kinetics. The optimized approach presented in this study is poised to advance the catalyst systems for UOR, which will lead to the development of high‐efficiency urea‐based energy conversion and storage systems for prospective integration in contemporary electronic architectures.
