Electrospun biosensors for biomarker detection

Bacterial infections remain a significant challenge in clinical medicine, and pervasive bacterial contamination addressed is based on the rational use of biomedical antibacterial materials in the clinic. While antibiotics have been instrumental in mitigating the threat of bacterial infections, the overuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, thus, there is an urgent need to explore alternative antimicrobial strategies. Gallium (Ga)-based materials hold tremendous potential due to their exceptional antimicrobial properties, which combine physical and chemical sterilization. Herein, we review the main antimicrobial mechanisms of Ga-based materials, including Fe metabolism inhibition, reactive oxygen species induced generation, and physical disruption. Additionally, we summarize the various functional applications of Ga-based antimicrobial materials. Finally, we present the future challenge and development of Ga-based antimicrobial materials.

A novel antimicrobial strategy for bacterial infections: Gallium-based materials

细菌感染的新型抗菌策略：基于镓的材料

Molecularly imprinted nano-antibodies (MINAs) are tailor-made recognition synthetic antibodies that mimic the behavior of biological receptors with a central role in numerous living systems. In the last decades, MINAs have gained attention for present high selectivity and affinity, remarkable stability, effective production methods, and potentially low cost. Currently, with innovations in material science and technological breakthroughs, the applications of MINAs are eventually undergoing a revolutionary transformation from the initial separation and adsorption fields to the burgeoning biomedicine fields. In this review, a comprehensive overview of key current progress made in the preparation of MINAs and their crucial biomedical applications is presented. Also, we provide future perspectives and highlight the present challenges remaining for prospective research on the biomedical applications of MINAs. We envision that this review will provide precious guidance for constructing multifunctional MINAs tailored towards the frontier needs in biomedicines, thereby fostering the development of approaches to biological material.

Emerging theragnostic molecularly imprinted nano-antibodies

新兴的诊疗一体化分子印迹纳米抗体

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is powerless against microbial contamination, which poses a threat to human health. Thus, endowing PET with anti-adhesion surface, but without releasing germicide, is currently still a challenge. To address this issue, a menthoxytriazine modified PET (PMET) was developed based on stereochemistry strategy, through inserting the menthoxytriazine block into the chain of PET. Antibacterial adhesion test and antifungal landing test were employed to verify the anti-adhesion performances of PMET. Compared with PET, PMET possessed better anti-adhesion capacity, achieving 90.2% and 87.7% resistance to Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive), and a clear surface without any spores of Aspergillus niger (fungi). In-depth analysis revealed that the exposure of menthoxy group on PMET skeleton is crucial for antimicrobial adhesion, otherwise the wind of menthoxy group in the control polymer shows less effect. Furthermore, PMET has no cytotoxicity, thus showing excellent potential for enhancing the anti-adhesive surface of PET.

Menthoxytriazine modified poly (ethylene terephthalate) for constructing anti-adhesion surface

Fungal contamination could increase exponentially on any convenient sites if without antifungal agents, thus seriously threatening human health. In this work, a cooperative fungal repelling coating has been fabricated by surface photografting polymerization of bi-molecules, polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) and bornyl acrylate (BA), which combined amphiphilic feature with stereochemical fungal repelling strategy. ATR-FTIR and EDS were used to confirm the synthesized copolymers. The surface microstructures of the coating film were showed with AFM and SEM images. The cooperative enhancement of fungal repelling performance has been demonstrated through modulating the ratio between hydrophilic PEGDA and hydrophobic BA. When the ratio of monomers was 1:1, the coating exhibited the best cooperative effect on anti-adhesion of Aspergillus niger. Binary cooperation between PEG ring and bornyl cage is considered to play a crucial role in this coating system. Therefore, amphiphilic-stereochemistry is believed to be an effective strategy to prevent fungal adhesion.
