As a result of increasing permafrost degradation, caused by climate warming, there is a growth in the number of deformations of buildings and structures in the regions of the Russian Arctic. The article examines in detail examples of building deformations in the north of the European part of Russia, in Western and Eastern Siberia, and on the Russian Arctic coast. The authors analyze and typify main causes of contingency situations. These include insufficient engineering and geological surveys, design errors, poor-quality construction of buildings and structures and violations of current standards for their operation. A serious risk factor in the construction and operation of civil and industrial facilities in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation caused the liquidation of the previously existing system for monitoring the condition of capital structures, design and technical services that specialized in the restoration and repair of damaged buildings. At the same time, following up the construction practice without taking into account regional forecasts of the permafrost state under climate change can multiply the damage from global warming. To solve the problem, it is necessary to restore the system of control, notification and protection of structures, based on the creation of a federal system for permafrost monitoring, including background and geotechnical components, and uniting various departments and economic entities. This measure will significantly reduce the technical and environmental costs of current economic activity in the Russian Arctic.

On the need to develop a comprehensive system of preventive measures against deformations of buildings and structures in the cryolithozone under climate change

For the first time, a comprehensive megaregional analysis of features of potential gas saturation of shallow deposits of the Arctic seas of Eastern Siberia, Chukotka and Alaska was carried out for 2086 objects revealed in CDP seismic sections with a total length of 40 thousand km. It was established that the gas saturation of shallow deposits in the studied areas depended on their tectonic activity on late stages of sedimentation. The highest density of distribution of potentially gas-saturated objects was revealed in the Laptev, Chukchi and Bering seas; in the East Siberian Sea it was 5-6 times lower. Also, in this sea, a minimal share of objects near the bottom (up to 100 m) was observed. The results as a whole confirm low tectonic activity (dislocation) at the late stages of sedimentation in the East Siberian Sea, which concurs with the pattern of the CDP seismic sections. The results can serve as important information for increasing the efficiency and safety of oil and gas exploration in the studied offshore areas.

Dangerous gas-saturated objects on the Arctic shelf of Eastern Siberia, the Far East (Russia) and Alaska (USA)

This paper studies the content of organochlorine pesticides and PCBs in muscle and liver of Atlantic cod and plaice, caught in the Barents Sea in 2016-2022. Chromatograph mass spectrometry is used to detect the content of organochlorine compounds in fish. The concentrations of HCB, α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, cis-chlordane, trans-chlordane, and trans-nonachlor in fish tissues are quantified, along with DDT and its metabolites, as well as PCB congeners with numbers 28, 31, 52, 99, 101, 105, 118, 138, 153, 156 and 180. The average content of ∑HCHs, HCB, ∑DDTs and ∑PCBs in cod muscle is 0.7, 0.06, 0.81 and 1.0 ng/g, and their average content in plaice muscle is 2.3, 0.66, 2.3 and 3.5 ng/g of wet weight, respectively. In cod liver, the average content of ∑HCHs, HCB, ∑DDTs, ∑PCBs, ∑chlordanes is 3.3, 3.0, 36.8, 65.4 and 30.9 ng/g, and their average content in plaice liver is 4.6, 6.5, 19.1, 10.9 and 4.8 ng/g of wet weight, respectively. The studies show that in fish tissue α-HCH predominates in ∑HCHs, ppꞌ-DDE — in ∑DDTs and PCB-118, PCB-138 and PCB-153 — in ∑PCBs. The accumulation of organochlorine compounds in fish tissue is found to be species-specific in terms of content level and ratio of HCH isomers, DDT isomers and metabolites, PCB congeners and chlordanes. The content of ∑HCHs, ∑DDTs and ∑PCBs in fish muscle and liver do not exceed the safe standards established for fish products.

Organochlorine compounds in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) of the Barents Sea

Currently, the Russian Arctic is actively engaged in economic activity related to exploration, extraction and transportation of minerals, fishing, and shipping. Data on wind wave parameters were obtained based on the WAVEWATCH III spectral model, and on wind and sea ice concentration from the NCEP/CFSR/CFSv2 reanalysis for the period from 1979 to 2021. Data on cyclones were used from a database created on the basis of NCEP reanalysis and includes information on the trajectory of cyclones and their main characteristics from 1979 to 2015. Estimates of the interannual and seasonal variability in the number and duration of storms in the Laptev Sea, East Siberian and Chukchi Seas were obtained. The obtained trend estimates indicate an increase in the number and duration of storms in all the studied seas. A relationship was found between an increase in the number of storms and a decrease in the area of sea ice, as well as an increase in the number of cyclones.

Increased storm activity in the eastern sector of the Russian Arctic

The article analyzes the results of studying technogenic hydrochemical dispersion flows arising during the development of ore and placer tin deposits in the Arctic regions of the North-East of Yakutia. Most of the large tin deposits are located beyond the Arctic Circle: primary (Deputatskoye, Dyakhtardakhskoye, Kester, Ulakhan-Egelyakhskoye, Churpunnya, Ege-Khaya) and placer (Smolnikova, Tasappa, Tirekhtyakh, Chokurdakhskaya) deposits. Development of tin deposits leads to a sharp change in the chemical composition of natural waters and the formation of extensive technogenic hydrochemical flows that negatively affect ecosystems. Pollution of natural waters during the development of tin deposits is associated with abnormal concentrations of mineral suspensions, sulfates, hydrogen, iron, aluminum, manganese, copper, zinc, lead, arsenic, and mercury.
