Chief Executive Officers of the National Mining Association (NMA) for the Mine of the Future (MOF) and their prioritized Technology Development Road Map, together with a 2010 Section 11 National Research Council/National Engineering Academy Study, confirmed that boundary detection in coal and metal/nonmetal mining remains a mining technology gap. The National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) Automated Coal Extraction (ACE) programme determined in 1971 that a horizon sensor (HS) installed on a rotating coal cutting drum and geological vision ahead of mining technologies were beyond the state-of-the-art. Remote control of mining machines assisted by ‘last cut’ machine control algorithms has enabled machine operation from a distance. The technology, when augmented with helmet-mounted air filters, has significantly improved machine operator health and safety. In idealistic coal deposits without meandering paleochannels, faults, and other types of anomalous seam geology, the prevailing state-of-the-art is highly useful. In the real world of sedimentary deposits, meandering paleochannels and differential compaction cause seam rolls, floor ‘horsebacks’, rapidly-thinning coal seams, and fractured roof rock. Paleochannels, faults, and dykes cause very high nonlinear stress fields in the seam and boundary rock. The thin boundary layers of a coal seam are commonly contaminated by heavy metals and radioactive elements that precipitate by biochemical reduction during the deltaic or strandline peatcoal forming processes. Gradational deposition is partly responsible for the higher density, sulphur, and ash observed in the thin boundary layer (Chyi and Chou, 1986). understanding of the structure of any mineral deposit. Several mapping methods may be applied depending on the available exposure/outcrop and nature of the orebody; for example, coal deposits typically suboutcrop only, therefore an opencut highwall provides the best exposure for mapping the geology. Mapped information, when incorporated into a resource model (generated from exploration borehole data), improves the understanding of the orebody or coal seam. This research paper focused on the use of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) technology for pit highwall mapping to generate data for updating geological models and avail the latest information to mine planning to improve the short-term plans. The Isibonelo Colliery’s geological model is updated annually and is termed a resource geological model, from which the mining model is built. This research was motivated by the absence of a short-term geological model that could be used for short-term mine planning. Short-term models are built by mine geologists, when they take the latest release of the resource geological model and add in data as it becomes available from progressive mining. The data includes surveyed highwall seam-roof and/or seam-floor contacts, faults, dykes, blast-hole data, grade control hole data, and any other measurements deemed necessary for modelling. Highwall mapping with a survey total station is standard practice at Isibonelo Colliery. Recent technological advances have made new digital photogrammetry techniques available for mapping, with a camera being carried by a UAS which does highwall mapping. The process of short-term geological modelling allows for the incorporation of small-scale features, such as seam rolls and previously unidentified faults, which may not be obvious from broadly spaced exploration drill-hole data.

��'(�$+$ Effective management and mitigation of pit slope instability in open pit mines begins with a comprehensive slope monitoring programme. The ability to differentiate between non-critical pit wall movements due to rebound or relaxation of the excavated slopes and movements that may be indicative of slope failure is important for maintaining a safe working environment and maximizing production. Slope failure prediction methods using velocity, acceleration, and strain criteria have been introduced and put into practice over the past few decades. Forty-eight slope failures with surface monitoring data are presented and assessed using the strain-based failure prediction approach, with consideration of the quality of the rock mass and the potential failure mechanism. The results indicate that the strain-based approach can be used to provide general guidance regarding strain thresholds for pit walls for a variety of failure modes in diverse geological environments. The advantages and potential drawbacks of the strain-based and other slope failure prediction methods are discussed. The importance of implementing a pit slope monitoring and performance evaluation system early in mine development is also emphasized.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are commonly extracted from various resources using hydrometallurgical processes. However, these processes tend to be unselective, with high co-extraction of gangue components. Co-extraction of gangue elements is undesirable as it complicates downstream separation and purification processes. Preliminary tests were conducted on synthetic cerium oxide (chemical grade CeO2) to investigate the technical feasibility of the sulphation roasting process for the extraction of REEs from different resources. Sulphation roasting was also applied to a REE-bearing ore under selected conditions. The highest REE extraction efficiency of 89% from synthetic CeO2 was achieved under sulphation roasting conditions of 700°C over 24 hours in a gas atmosphere made up of 32% SO2 and 16% O2 (2:1, SO2:O2 ratio). The extraction efficiencies from the REE-bearing ore were 47% Ce, 46% La, and 67% Nd, 4% Fe, and 10% Mn after sulphation roasting at 750°C for 24 hours. These preliminary results indicate that it may be feasible to produce REEs from different resources using the established selective sulphation roasting process.
