Roll bonding (RB) process of bi-metal laminates as a new noble method of bonding has been widely used in the production of bimetal laminates. In the present study, asymmetric roll bonding process as a new noble method has been presented to produce Al/Cu bimetallic laminates with the thickness reduction ratios 10%, 20% and 30% together with mismatch rolling diameter (R2/R1) ratio 1:1, 1:1.1 and 1:1.2. ABAQUS as a finite element simulation software was used to model the deformation of samples. The main attention in this study focuses on the bonding properties of Al/Cu samples. The effect of the R2/R1 ratios was investigated to improve the bond strength. During the simulation, for samples produced with R2/R1 = 1:1.2, the vertical plastic strain of samples was reach the maximum value with a high quality bond. Moreover, the peeling surface of samples after the peeling test was investigated by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Bonding evolution of bimetallic Al/Cu laminates fabricated by asymmetric roll bonding

This paper presents a review study for energy-efficient gas turbines (GTs) with cycles which contributes significantly towards sustainable usage. Nonetheless, these progressive engines, operative at turbine inlet temperatures as high as 1600°C, require the employment of highly creep resistant materials for use in hotter section components of gas turbines like combustion chamber and blades. However, the gas turbine obtain its driving power by utilizing the energy of treated gases and air which is at piercing temperature and pushing by expanding through the several rings of steady and vibratory blades. Since the turbine blades works at very high temperature and pressure, high stress concentration are observed on the blades. With the increasing demand of service, to provide adequate efficiency and power within the optimized level, turbine blades are to be made of those materials which can withstand high thermal and working load condition for longer cycle time. This paper depicts the recent developments in the field of implementing the best suited materials for the GTs, selection of proper Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC), fracture analysis and experiments on failed or used turbine blades and several other designing and operating factors which are effecting the blade life and efficiency. It is revealed that Nickel based Superalloys were promising, Cast Iron with Zirconium and Pt-Al coatings are used as best TBC material, material defects are the foremost and prominent reason for blade failure.

Analysis and structural design of various turbine blades under variable conditions: A review

变工况下多种涡轮叶片分析与结构设计综述

Polypropylene (PP) fibers for making fabric which is used for packing cement have a high strength and high tear resistance. Due to these excellent properties the present study investigates the effect of PP fibers on the mechanical strength of concrete. Mechanical strength parameters such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength are evaluated. Structural integrity of concrete using Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) was also studied. Concrete containing PP fibers in percentage of 0%, 0.15%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 0.75% was developed with a characteristic compressive strength of 25 MPa. Concrete cubes, cylinder and prismatic specimens were cast and tested. It was found that the UPV values recorded for all specimens were of the similar order. Test results indicated the used of PP fibers can significantly improve the flexural and splitting tensile strengths of concrete materials whereas it resulted a decreased in compressive strength. The relative increase in split tensile and flexural strength was optimum at a fiber dosage of 0.5% and a mild decreased were observed in 28 days compressive strength. The findings in this paper suggested that PP fibers deriving from these waste cement bags are a feasible fiber option for fiber-reinforced concrete productions.

Effect of waste cement bag fibers on the mechanical strength of concrete

The lifetime of a gas turbine combustor is typically limited by the durability of its liner, the structure that encloses the high-temperature combustion products. The primary objective of the combustor thermal design process is to ensure that the liner temperatures do not exceed a maximum value set by material limits. Liner temperatures exceeding these limits hasten the onset of cracking which increase the frequency of unscheduled engine removals and cause the maintenance and repair costs of the engine to increase. Hot gas temperature prediction can be considered a preliminary step for combustor liner temperature prediction which can make a suitable view of combustion chamber conditions. In this study, the temperature distribution of ceramic panels for a V94.2 gas turbine combustor subjected to realistic operation conditions is presented using three-dimensional finite difference method. A simplified model of alumina ceramic is used to obtain the temperature distribution. The external thermal loads consist of convection and radiation heat transfers are considered that these loads are applied to flat segmented panel on hot side and forced convection cooling on the other side. First the temperatures of hot and cold sides of ceramic are calculated. Then, the thermal boundary conditions of all other ceramic sides are estimated by the field observations. Finally, the temperature distributions of ceramic panels for a V94.2 gas turbine combustor are computed by MATLAB software. The results show that the gas emissivity for diffusion mode is more than premix therefore the radiation heat flux and temperature will be more. The results of this work are validated by ANSYS and ABAQUS softwares. It is showed that there is a good agreement between all results.

Temperature distribution of ceramic panels of a V94.2 gas turbine combustor under realistic operation conditions

Through experimental and numerical studies of metal forming processes by plastic deformation, this paper represents a numerical simulation by finite element of the mechanical behavior of the material during a permanent deformation phenomenon. The main interest of this study is to optimize the shaping processes such as folding. In this context the elastic return for the folding process has been further reduced by using the design of experiments approach. In this analysis, it is proposed to consider the following factors: bending radius, metal-sheet thickness, gap and length of the fold.

Numerical modelling of springback behavior in folding process

Determining grain-size and grading distribution of river-side sediments is very important for issues related to lateral embankment drift, river-side nourishment, management plans, and riverbank stability. In this regard, experimental procedures such as sieve analysis are used in regular assessments which require special laboratory equipment that are quite time consuming to perform. The presented study provides a machine vision and image processing-based approach for determining coarse grained sediment size and distribution that is relatively quick and effective. In this regard, an image image processing-based method was used to determine the particle size of sediments as justified by screening tests which were conducted on samples taken from the riverside granular sediments. As a methodology, different grain identification stages were applied to extract sediment features such as pre-processing, edge detection, granular size classification and post-processing. According to the results of the grain identification stages, the applied technique identified about 35% sand, 55% gravel and 7% cobble which is approximately near to the screen test results which were determined as 30% sand, 52% gravel, and 5% cobble. These results obtained from computer-based analyses and experiments indicated that the utilised processing technique provided satisfactory results for gradation distribution analysis regarding riverside granular sediments.

Application of an image processing-based algorithm for river-side granular sediment gradation distribution analysis

基于图像处理的河岸颗粒沉积物分级分布分析算法应用

Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) obtained from demolished structures can be used for concrete making, and is established as a promising material in the field of construction. In the present study, the effect of RCA on the mechanical properties of different strength concretes admixed with Micro silica, fly ash and nano-silica as a part replacement to cement was considered. The quantity of cement varied from 350-690 kg/m3 with the additions of Fly ash at 0, 20 and 30%, micro silica at 0, 5, 10 and 15%, and Nano silica at 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4%. The samples were cured for 7, 28, 56 and 90 days and tested for Compressive strength. Split tensile and flexural strength evaluation was carried out on samples which have been cured for 28 days. The workability of fresh concrete was determined. With the help of the tested database, equations for prediction of compressive strength using modified Bolomey's equation were generated. Equations for the flexural strength and split tensile strengths based on compressive strength were developed and compared with equations available in the literature.

Correlation of strength development of RCA in quaternary blended cementitious system

Coupled steel plate shear wall (C-SPSW) is one of the resisting systems with high ductility and energy absorption. Energy dissipation in the C-SPSW system is accomplished by the bending and shear behavior of the link beams and SPSW. Energy dissipation and floor displacement control occur through link beams at low seismic levels, easily replaced after an earthquake. In this study, a coupled steel plate shear wall with a yielding fuse is presented. The system uses a high-ductility fuse pin element instead of a link beam, which has good replaceability after the earthquake. In this study, four models of coupled steel plate shear walls were investigated with I-shaped link beam, Ishaped link beam with reduced beam section (RBS), box-link beam with RBS, and fuse pin element under cyclic loading. The finite element method was used through ABAQUS software to develop the C-SPSW models. To verify the finite element model results, two test specimens of coupled steel plate shear walls were validated. Comparative results of the hysteresis curves obtained from the finite element analysis with the experimental curves indicated that the finite element model offered a good prediction of the hysteresis behavior of C-SPSW. The results of the C-SPSW models revealed that the fuse pin caused an increase in the ultimate capacity by approximately 19% and the energy dissipation by 20% compared to the other C-SPSW.

Cyclic behavior and performance of a coupled-steel plate shear wall with fuse pin

The prime objective of the present study is to exploit a user friendly, inexpensive all solid state super capacitor using a suitable electrolyte and electrodes. A gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) consisted with polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluopropylene (PVdF), ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC) and zinc trifluoromethane sulfonate (Zn(CF3SO3)2-ZnTF) was prepared using solvent casting method and its properties were optimized by varying the composition. The composition of 16 PVdF : 22 ZnTF : 31 EC : 31 PC (weight %) exhibits the optimum room temperature conductivity of 3.09 × 10-3 Scm-1. It is purely an ionic conductor having a negligible electronic conductivity. In addition, it was possible to obtain a thin, mechanically stable film. The electrodes were prepared using Sri Lankan natural graphite (NG) with a polymer binder. Eventhough there are reports about natural graphite based super capacitors, Sri Lankan natural graphite has not been considered for super capacitors at a large scale. The main reason for turning towards natural graphite is to reap the benefits of low cost as well as the safety. In order to optimize the electrode properties, the ratio between graphite and polymer binder (in weight basis) was changed. The polymer binder used was polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Super capacitor fabricated with the electrode of the composition, NG : PTFE = 90:10 shows the maximum single electrode specific capacitance (2.58 Fg-1). The fabricated device retains for continuous charge discharge operation with a minimum performance reduction.

Optimization and application of a gel polymer electrolyte in solid state super capacitors with graphite electrodes

An analytical method based on the compatibility of deformations and equilibrium of forces is investigated to predict the reinforcement plate area in concrete beams strengthened with Functionally Graded (FG) plates bonded to the tension face of the beams. The models are given for beams having rectangular and T-crosssections. The effect of porosity that can happen inside FGM materials during their manufacture is also shown. New rules of the mixture that take into account different distribution rates of porosity in FG plates have been developed in this study. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of several parameters such as the ultimate moment, plate stiffness, the distribution rate of the porosity, and compressive strength of the concrete. The results obtained show a significant gain in the reinforcement plate area of the RC beam strengthened with an FG plate relative to another reinforced with FRP plate, which makes it possible to reduce the interfacial stresses and prevents detachment of the reinforcing plate.
