In recent years, there has been an upsurge for the usage of buckling restrained braces (BRB) rather than ordinary braces, as they have evidently performed better. If the overall brace buckling is ignored, BRBs are proven to have higher energy absorption capacity and flexibility. This article aims to deliberate an economically efficient yet adequate type of all-steel BRB, comprised of the main components as in traditional ones, such as : (1) a steel core that holds all axial forces and (2) a steel restrainer tube that hinders buckling to occurr in the core; there is a more practical detailing in the BRB system due to the elimination of a filling mortar. An investigation has been conducted for the proposed rectangular-tube core BRB and it is hysteric behavioral results have been compared to previous researches conducted on a structure containing a similar plate core profile that has the same cross-sectional area in its core. A loss of strength is known to occur in the BRB when the limiting condition of local buckling is not satisfied, thus causing instability. This typically occurs when the thickness of the restrainer tube

Performance assessment of buckling restrained brace with tubular profile

In this work, we report the use of caffeine as an alternative source of nitrogen to successfully dope graphene (quaternary 400.6 eV and pyridinic at 398 eV according XPS), as well as the growth of silver nanowires (in-situ) in the surface of nitrogen doped graphene (NG) sheets. We used the improved graphene oxide method (IGO), chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GOx), and impregnation with caffeine as source of nitrogen for doping and subsequently, silver nanowires (NW) grow in the surface by the reduction of silver salts in the presence of NG, achieving a numerous of growth of NW in the graphene sheets. As supporting experimental evidence, the samples were analyzed using conventional characterization techniques: SEM-EDX, XRD, FT-IR, micro RAMAN, TEM, and XPS.

Caffeine as a source for nitrogen doped graphene, and its functionalization with silver nanowires in-situ

Geometrically nonlinear buckling of functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic (FG-MEE) nanoshells with the use of classical shell theory and nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) has been analyzed in present research. Mathematical formulation based on NSGT gives two scale coefficients for simultaneous description of structural stiffness reduction and increment. Functional gradation of material properties is described based on power-law formulation. The nanoshell is under a multi-physical field related to applied voltage, magnetic potential, and mechanical load. Exerting a strong electric voltage, magnetic potential or mechanical load may lead to buckling of nanoshell. Taking into account geometric nonlinearity effects after buckling, the behavior of nanoshell in post-buckling regime can be analyzed. Nonlinear governing equations are reduced to ordinary equations utilizing Galerkin's approach and post-buckling curves are obtained based on an analytical procedure. It will be shown that post-buckling curves are dependent on nonlocal/strain gradient parameters, electric voltage magnitude and sign, magnetic potential magnitude and sign and material gradation exponent.

On post-buckling characteristics of functionally graded smart magneto-electro-elastic nanoscale shells

Filter cake formation during rotary drilling operation is an unavoidable scenario, hence there is need for constant improvement in the approaches used in monitoring the cake thickness growth in order to prevent drill-string sticking. This study proposes an improved model that predicts the growth of mud cake thickness overtime with the consideration of the addition of nanoparticles in the formulated drilling fluid system. Ferric oxide, titanium dioxide and copper oxide nanoparticles were used in varying amounts (2 g, 4 g and 6 g), and filtration data were obtained from the HPHT filtration test. The filter cakes formed were further analyzed with scanning electron microscope to obtain the morphological characteristics. The data obtained was used to validate the new filtrate loss model. This model specifically presents the concept of time variation in filter cake formation as against the previous works of constant and definite time. Regression coefficient which is a statistical measure was used to validate the new model and the predicted results were compared with the API model. The new model showed R2 values of 99.9%, and the predictions from the proposed filtration model can be said to be more closely related to the experimental data than that predicted from the API model from the SSE and RMSE results.

A new model for curbing filtrate loss in dynamic application of nano-treated aqueous mud systems

The present paper deals with analyzing nonlinear forced vibrational behaviors of nonlocal multi-phase piezo-magnetic beam rested on elastic substrate and subjected to an excitation of elliptic type. The applied elliptic force may be presented as a Fourier series expansion of Jacobi elliptic functions. The considered multi-phase smart material is based on a composition of piezoelectric and magnetic constituents with desirable percentages. Additionally, the equilibrium equations of nanobeam with piezo-magnetic properties are derived utilizing Hamilton's principle and von-Karman geometric nonlinearity. Then, an exact solution based on Jacobi elliptic functions has been provided to obtain nonlinear vibrational frequencies. It is found that nonlinear vibrational behaviors of the nanobeam are dependent on the magnitudes of induced electrical voltages, magnetic field intensity, elliptic modulus, force magnitude and elastic substrate parameters.

Analyzing exact nonlinear forced vibrations of two-phase magneto-electro-elastic nanobeams under an elliptic-type force

This paper is devoted to investigate the nonlinear free vibrations of multi-phase piezoelectric doubly-curved microshells in the context of modified strain gradient elastic (MSGT). The microshell has been made from two constituents for which different compositions have been considered by defining a piezoelectric phase percentage. The microscale effects have been described with the incorporation of three scale coefficients involved in MSGT. With the use of suitable Fourier series and the concept of Galerkin's method, the solution for the governing equations of double-curvature microshell have been provided. The calculated frequencies are dependent on the piezoelectric phase percentage, scale coefficients, curvature radius and applied electric voltage.

Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are designed for specific purpose and applications. Functionally graded materials for bi-layered cylindrical shell was discussed for different boundary conditions. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are that kind of material in which function and formation may deviate continuously. Cylindrical shells are mainly significant in various fields of science as well as advanced technology of engineering like aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering. Wide applications of cylindrical shell in different fields like aircraft, aerospace and pressure vessels etc. Bi-layered cylindrical shells consist of two layers and in this work, one layer is of FGM material whose constituents are nickel (Ni) and zirconia (Zr) and other is of isotropic material whose constituent is stainless steel. In this work, effect of trigonometric volume fraction law on cantilever FGM bi-layered cylindrical shell with internal pressure has analyzed by using Rayleigh-Ritz technique and Love's shell theory. Present results of FGM bi-layered cylindrical shell are compared with FGM cylindrical shell. Validity of present technique has verified by way of comparisons with current conclusions and those obtained in the past studies.

Performance of FGM bilayered cylindrical shell placed on cantilever edge

Static analysis of microstructures, including bending and buckling, is widely practiced in the fabrication and creation of applications such as actuation, sensing, and energy recovery. This article aims to inquire about the static behavior of non-uniform and imperfect microtubes through a numerical solution. Based on the modified couple stress theory, the first-order shear deformation theory and Von-Karman nonlinear theory, and employing the energy conservation method, the linear and nonlinear governing equations are derived. The porosity-dependent material in both ceramic and metal phases makes the functionally graded materials which are varied along tube length, moreover, cross-sections are also considered uniform and nonuniform via three valuable functions. Finally, the linear and nonlinear equations are solved utilizing the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) coupled with the numerical iteration method.

Computer simulation of the nonlinear static behavior of axially functionally graded microtube with porosity

By using differential quadrature method (DQM), a numerical investigation was provided for nonlinear stability behavior of magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) cylindrical shells at microscale. It is assumed that the cylindrical shell has been subjected to compressive loads leading to buckling phenomena in geometrically nonlinear regime. The non-uniformity of strain field has been inserted in the formulation for considering the microscale effects. The material properties of the shell are considered to be inhomogeneous with graded distribution. After solving the governing equations using DQM, it is realized that if the nanoscale shell is subjected to electrical and magnetic fields, the post-buckling path may be changed with the value of electrical voltage and magnetic potential. Also, strain gradient effects have remarkable influence on post-buckling curves and critical voltages.

Analytical and mathematical simulation for nonlinear stability of scale-dependent magneto-electro-elastic system

Precipitation is one of the most significant variables with an impact on the environment, agriculture, as well as the design of any hydraulic infrastructures. The rainfall analysis predicts the highest, average, and minimal values of rainfall that are expected in certain catchments for return periods. The long-term variability of rainfall over the Arbaat watershed was studied at the various stations in a duration (day, month, and year) from 1942 to 2010 rainfall runoff using the Isohyetal Map of the area besides using different plotting position formulae of rainfall ratios. This statistical analysis will offer valuable data for water resource planners for Port Sudan, farmers, and Red Sea Water Corporations engineers (RSSWC) to evaluate the availability of water and create the storage accordingly. From the rainfall-depth analysis outcomes, the rainfall pattern was found to be irregular. Although the historical data was used, the meteorological observation of Suakin, Sinkat, and Arbaat stations was stopped from work. However, Port Sudan station gave reliable results without resorting to precipitation data measured by the satellites. Besides, the outcomes of this study can provide rational guidelines and policy concerning water resources to preserve the health of several ecosystems in the regions of under study.
