Metasurfaces have recently risen to prominence in optical research, providing unique functionalities that can be used for imaging, beam forming, holography, polarimetry, and many more, while keeping device dimensions small. Despite the fact that a vast range of basic metasurface designs has already been thoroughly studied in the literature, the number of metasurface-related papers is still growing at a rapid pace, as metasurface research is now spreading to adjacent fields, including computational imaging, augmented and virtual reality, automotive, display, biosensing, nonlinear, quantum and topological optics, optical computing, and more. At the same time, the ability of metasurfaces to perform optical functions in much more compact optical systems has triggered strong and constantly growing interest from various industries that greatly benefit from the availability of miniaturized, highly functional, and efficient optical components that can be integrated in optoelectronic systems at low cost. This creates a truly unique opportunity for the field of metasurfaces to make both a scientific and an industrial impact. The goal of this Roadmap is to mark this "golden age" of metasurface research and define future directions to encourage scientists and engineers to drive research and development in the field of metasurfaces toward both scientific excellence and broad industrial adoption.

Heterogeneously Integrated Lithium Niobate on Insulator Chip for Frequency Up-Conversion and Detection

The field of vibrational polariton chemistry was firmly established in 2016 when a chemical reaction rate at room temperature was modified within a resonantly tuned infrared cavity without externally driving the system. Despite intense efforts by scientists around the world to understand why the reaction rate changes, no convincing theoretical explanation exists. In this Perspective, first, we briefly review this seminal experiment, as well as relevant experiments that have since followed that have hinted at the roles of reactant concentration, cavity frequency, and symmetry. Then, we analyze the relevance of leading theories, such as quantum electrodynamics-modified transition rate theories, the photonic solvent cage effect, the impact of dissipation from dark states, bond strengthening via intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution, and collectively enhanced local molecular properties. Finally, we construct a roadmap toward the theory of vibrational polariton chemistry by suggesting experiments to test theories and new paths for theorists. We believe that understanding the importance of the onset of the strong coupling regime, designing experiments to capture changes in reaction pathways, exploring the full dispersion of cavities, and further developing the theories of cavity-modified intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution and collectively enhanced local molecular properties are crucial next steps. We hope this Perspective will be a valuable resource for guiding research in the field of vibrational polariton chemistry.

A Roadmap Toward the Theory of Vibrational Polariton Chemistry

Optical modulators with ultrahigh speed, small footprint, large bandwidth, robust athermal operation, and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility are important devices for optical communication and computing applications. Compared to the conventional optical modulators, graphene modulators have attracted great interest due to their large optical bandwidth with an ultracompact footprint. However, their practical applications are limited by the trade-off between speed and optical bandwidth, with a critical issue of temperature tolerance. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an athermal graphene optical modulator with a 140 nm bandwidth in the entire optical communication regime (1500–1640 nm), with robust high-temperature operation. The device is based on a planar structure with double-layer graphene, leading to the high modulation speed, up to 35 GHz through reduction of the total resistance, and capacitance (9 fF). We observe speed stability in a wide range of temperatures (25–145 °C). The ultracompact footprint (18 μm2) of the device promises the next generation of on-chip optical interconnections for efficient communication.

Athermal Broadband Graphene Optical Modulator with 35 GHz Speed

35 GHz 速率的无热宽带石墨烯光调制器

All-dielectric metasurfaces are promising candidates for the next-generation planar photonic devices. Magneto-optical (MO) all-dielectric metasurfaces are particularly attractive due to their enhanced MO response at the subwavelength scale. In this paper, we report a MO all-dielectric metasurface based on a Ce:YIG thin film and a two-dimensional array of the silicon nanoresonators. Compared to a bare Ce:YIG film, the device shows a four times enhancement of the Faraday effect and the MO figure of merit (FOM) at 1370 nm wavelength. The high Faraday rotation (FR) and FOM are caused by the increase in the interaction time between light and magnetic matter which is indicated by the local field increase inside the Ce:YIG film when exciting the hybrid Mie resonance-waveguide modes. Simultaneously enhanced FR and FOM make the dielectric MO metasurfaces promising candidates for free-space MO devices such as MO sensors, MO modulators, and nonreciprocal photonic devices.

Exploring the Influence of Localized Surface Plasmon and Sol–Gel Passivation on Blue InGaN/GaN Micro/Nano Light Emitting Diodes

Photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) has been widely used for sensing tasks; however, its potential appears to be unexplored for the development of a compact yet effective sensor for the classification of liquid chemicals. In this study, a liquid identification scheme is demonstrated based on the recently proposed rotational PSHE, where the weak measurement techniques are no longer required for sensing. A liquid crystal device is fabricated to experimentally validate the rotational PSHE, which provides unique beam patterns for liquid analytes. The collected beam pattern images are used to train an EfficientNet-V2─a fast and efficient deep learning architecture─for classifying the liquid chemicals. Two groups of liquids are identified with accuracy over 99% in the proposed scheme. Moreover, the performances of several deep learning models are compared, demonstrating the fast training speed and high parameter efficiency of the EfficientNet-V2. The proposed approach provides an efficient, accurate, and convenient method for refractive index sensing.

Unveiling the Effect of Synthetic Atmospheric Humidity on the Performance of FAPbBr<sub>3</sub> Nanocrystals and Their PeLEDs

It is intriguing to manipulate light in different ways depending on its properties. This allows a passive device to function with versatility without the need for active tuning. In other words, light itself can be used as an optical control knob. Multiplexable optical devices hold immense promise as ultrathin integrated processors, capable of manipulating multiple parameters of light. In this study, inverse design methods are employed to optimize wavelength-multiplexed and polarization-multiplexed meta-devices for imaging and processing. These meta-devices demonstrate bright-field imaging and edge detection at different wavelengths or polarization states, effectively conducting Fourier filtering on input images by adjusting the momentum transfer function. The innovative approach paves the way for broader utilization of optical meta-devices in multidimensional light field multiplexing.

Inverse Design of Multiplexable Meta-Devices for Imaging and Processing

We present Purcell-enhanced (FP > 25) semiconductor InAs quantum dot decay times of T1 < 30 ps, enabled by deterministic hybrid circular Bragg gratings (hCBGs). We investigate the benefits of these short T1-times on the two-photon indistinguishability for quasi-resonant and strictly resonant excitation and observe visibilities of ≥96% at 12.5 ns time delay of consecutively emitted photons. The strongly Purcell-enhanced decay times enable a high degree of indistinguishability for elevated temperatures of up to 30 K and, moreover, allow for excitation of up to 1.28 GHz repetition rate. Our work highlights the prospects of highly Purcell-enhanced solid-state quantum emitters for applications in quantum information and technologies operating at GHz clock rates.
