Abstract This article describes a technology to transform a petri dish into a microfluidic chip with a stem cell nest for stem cell niche engineering. A permanent magnet sphere is put in a 30 mm petri dish as an oscillator pump (O‐pump). An earphone‐sized actuator outside the petri dish receives the programmed audio signal from an MP3 player or a mobile phone to drive the in‐dish O‐pump for a microflow. There are guiding walls to form a wake area for the cell nest at the dish's center. The cell nest uses the wake to create a stable, ultraslow internal microcirculation flow. The retention half‐life of nanoparticles in the cell nest is 1419.8 ± 1.3 s. By setting the microfluidic program and supplementing five drops of the culture medium outside the cell nest every 2 d, the growth rate of embryonic stem cells in the cell nest during the 8 d automatic culture appears significantly optimized. The single clone area of embryonic stem cells increases from (3.57 ± 0.52) × 10 5 to (11.67 ± 1.33) × 10 5 µ m 2 after 2 d of the automatic culture and advances to (53.34 ± 8.37) × 10 5 µ m 2 after 4 d.

Design Artificial Stem Cell Nests for Stem Cell Niche in a Microfluidic Petri Dish Programmed by a Cell Phone

Abstract Laser‐induced forward transfer (LIFT) is a digital printing technique that uses a pulsed laser beam as the driving force to project material from a donor thin film toward the receiving substrate whereon that material will be finally deposited as a voxel. This working principle allows LIFT to operate with both solid and liquid donor films, which provides the technique with an unprecedented broad spectrum of printable materials, and thus makes it very competitive over other digital technologies, like inkjet printing. It is not only that LIFT can access a much wider range of ink viscosities and loading particle sizes; the possibility of printing from solid films allows the single‐step printing of multilayers and entire devices, and even makes possible 3D printing. This versatility translates, in turn, into a broad field of applications, from graphics production to printed electronics, from the fabrication of chemical sensors to tissue engineering. This monograph provides an extensive review of the LIFT technique, from its origins to the most recent achievements, focusing on the fundamental aspects of both its working principle and transfer dynamics, as well as on its broad range of applications.

Abstract In the past decade, flexible electronics have attracted significant research attention due to their distinct features and emerging applications in numerous fields such as, flexible displays, implantable sensors, and energy storage systems, among other applications. Due to the development of flexible electronics, this paper details the substrates employed to produce flexible electronic devices, given that substrates generally govern the overall device properties. The increase in research attention can be attributed to the use of films as flexible substrates, which enable the implementation of numerous design strategies and engineering methodologies, thus leading to extensive advances in the manufacturing quality and prospect of flexible electronics in various applications. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the significance of substrates in flexible wearable electronics over the past decade, such as, the substrate properties requirements, processing classification, important flexible devices, and applications, including sensing, energy storage, and other electronic devices.

Significance of Flexible Substrates for Wearable and Implantable Devices: Recent Advances and Perspectives

Abstract For decades, the revolution in design and fabrication methodology of flexible capacitive pressure sensors using various inorganic/organic materials has significantly enhanced the field of flexible and wearable electronics with a wide range of applications in aerospace, automobiles, marine environment, robotics, healthcare, and consumer/portable electronics. Mathematical modelling, finite element simulations, and unique fabrication strategies are utilized to fabricate diverse shapes of diaphragms, shells, and cantilevers which function in normal, touch, or double touch modes, operation principles inspired from microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based capacitive pressure sensing techniques. The capacitive pressure sensing technique detects changes in capacitance due to the deformation/deflection of a pressure sensitive mechanical element that alters the separation gap of the capacitor. Due to advancement in state‐of‐the‐art fabrication technologies, the performance and properties of capacitive pressure sensors are enhanced. In this review paper, recent progress in flexible capacitive pressure sensing techniques in terms of design, materials, and fabrication strategies is reported. The mechanics and fabrication steps of paper‐based low‐cost MEMS/flexible devices are also broadly reported. Lastly, the applications of flexible capacitive pressure sensors, challenges, and future perspectives are discussed.

Recent Progress on Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensors: From Design and Materials to Applications

Abstract Despite the growing significance of generating highly porous, high‐precision 3D printed scaffolds using melt electrowriting (MEW), the absence of easy‐to‐use and robust design and g‐code generation tools hinders its effectiveness and widespread adoption. This article introduces a versatile scaffold design workflow for MEW fabrication, drawing on learnings in scaffold design and fabrication optimization from pioneers in the field and unifies innovative approaches into one user‐friendly platform. The application contains a library of validated flat and tubular patterns, as well as incorporating automated solutions to common challenges such as scaffold dimension fitting and toolpath corrections previously reported in the literature and historically challenging to deploy into new g‐codes. Available to users via GitHub, this application readily generates a g‐code that compensates for MEW fiber lag across diverse geometries on a variety of flat and cylindrical collectors. The application's capabilities are demonstrated through proof‐of‐concept prints, including layer‐shifting strategies, and their effects on scaffold mechanical properties. By integrating design flexibility, layer‐shifting strategies, and advanced visualization, this application streamlines the MEW scaffold design process, offering a valuable tool for researchers and promises to both advance the field and enable greater access to tools required to produce high‐quality, reproducible scaffolds.

A Melt Electrowriting Toolbox for Automated G‐Code Generation and Toolpath Correction of Flat and Tubular Constructs

Abstract In recent times, there has been a growing focus on developing flexible electrochemical energy storage devices to address the booming demands of wearable electronics. Supercapacitors (SC) are prized among the electrochemical energy storage devices for their remarkable specific capacitance and power density. Conventional flexible SCs predominantly rely on various carbon based materials as electrodes and current collectors for these applications. Despite this, a novel approach is adopted to fabricate a flexible supercapacitor from laser‐induced graphene with a ternary hybrid of polypyrrole with Mxene and carbon nanotube (PPy@E‐MXene/f‐CNT) as an electrode material. The fabricated in‐plane supercapacitor achieves an outstanding specific capacitance of 66.6 mF cm −2 (83.25 mFg −1 ) with an energy density of 4.5 µWh cm −2 (with a power density of 0.03 mW cm −2 ). This innovative approach presents a promising avenue for developing flexible and wearable energy storage solutions. Further, Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations are carried out to support the experimental findings and elucidate the structural, electronic, and electrochemical properties of the hybrid systems.

Abstract Optoelectronic properties of GaN are underexplored on good lattice matching SrTiO 3 (STO) due to STO's instability at the high GaN growth temperatures (800–1100 °C) required by traditional techniques. Here, GaN is grown on STO (100) at lower temperatures (500, 600, and 700 °C) using the laser‐assisted molecular beam epitaxy (LMBE) technique, and their morphological, crystalline, optical, and photodetection properties are analyzed. Further, heterojunction of Bi 2 Se 3 thin film (bandgap of 0.3 eV) is formed on the highest photo‐responsive LMBE‐GaN/STO to fabricate a self‐powered broadband photodetector. The fabricated self‐powered heterojunction photodetectors device exhibits a high responsivity of 2.93 × 10 2 mAW −1 in ultraviolet region and a notable responsivity of 2.3 and 12 mAW −1 in visible and near‐infrared spectral regions, respectively. In addition, photoresponse properties of fabricated devices on bare LMBE‐GaN and its heterojunction are compared under UV light illumination. The photoresponsivity of heterojunction in UV region is estimated to be 3.05 × 10 4 mAW −1 , which is enhanced by 100% compared to bare LMBE‐GaN. Combining the unique optoelectronic properties of GaN and rigidity of STO, epitaxy of GaN on STO enables construction of robust photodetector devices. Further, Bi 2 Se 3 ‐functionalized GaN can provide self‐sufficient and high‐quality futuristic optoelectronics devices.

Revealing Self‐Driven Broadband Photodetection Using Heterojunction of Bi2Se3 and Low‐Temperature Laser Molecular Beam Epitaxy Grown GaN on SrTiO3 (100) Substrate

Abstract The long‐term intelligent machine condition monitoring system is essential in improving maintenance costs and decision‐making. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has a great advantage in developing self‐powered machine condition monitoring. The main issues preventing TENG for such applications are poor integration to machine components, limited operational range, and weak durability. In this work, durable non‐contact TENG energy harvester adaptive is designed to mechanical shafts for harvesting rotational energy. The harvester is designed to automatically switch to the non‐contact mode by using centrifugal force to avoid manual switching while operating over a wide range of speeds of 0–2000 rpm. The designed TENG generates a high output of up to 25 mW with excellent stability for &gt;20 days of continuous operation and exhibits a high‐power density of 286 W m −3 . Moreover, a self‐powered long‐term continuous condition monitoring system is developed from a TENG sensor, energy harvester, and wireless module. The developed system successfully sends possible machine fault frequency every 74 min to the cloud and accessible anywhere. This is the only TENG design reported in the literature that can fully power a Wi‐Fi module to send data. Hence, the result promises the practical application of the system in developing internet of things (IoT) in the Industry.

Durable Self‐Powered Wireless IoT Machine Condition Monitoring System Based on an Auto‐Switching Non‐Contact Centrifugal TENG

Abstract With the increasing frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme heat events due to climate change, heat‐related diseases or even mortality have become more prevalent. An efficient personal cooling strategy can mitigate heat stress by regulating the skin temperature within the thermal comfort zone. However, lightweight, wearable, and sustainable cooling garments are unavailable today. Here, the study develops a thermoelectric device (TED)‐based cooling garment and demonstrates its effectiveness in active personal cooling. The garment is shown to maintain the skin temperature within its thermal comfort zone in a hot environment of up to 40 °C under mild forced convection conditions (air flow speed of 2.2 m s −1 ). Furthermore, the study demonstrates a portable cooling system with less than 700 grams of total weight, which includes the TED‐based garment, a battery pack, and a temperature controller. The system showed long‐term cooling on the skin with varying ambient temperatures from 35 to 40 °C. With the advantages of lightweight, flexible, controllable, and long‐term effective cooling, the TED cooling garments described in this work can contribute to enhanced health and comfort in an increasingly hotter climate.

Flexible Thermoelectric Active Cooling Garment to Combat Extreme Heat

Abstract Soft actuators are critical for enabling soft robots, medical devices, and haptic systems. Many soft actuators, however, require power to hold a configuration and rely on hard circuitry for control, limiting their potential applications. In this work, the first soft electromagnetic system is demonstrated for externally‐controlled bistable actuation or self‐regulated astable oscillation. This novel bellows‐shaped actuator uses liquid metal encased in silicone as a compliant conductor that is capable of force generation, integrated sensing, and self‐reconnecting. In the bistable configuration, the actuator can hold positions with no power. By utilizing a unique soft kinking mechanism, the actuator can generate feedback for self‐regulated oscillation. The construction, sensing, and feedback mechanisms for this actuator are first discussed. Then, the force output, thermal performance, and dynamics are characterized. The bistable version has a stroke of 6 mm and can compress/expand with only 15 W of power for 30 ms. The astable version has a stroke of 3 mm and can oscillate at 27 Hz with 18 W of power. Several applications are demonstrated including bistable crawling, hopping, pulsing, and swimming. By adding a 20 V battery, self‐regulated astable vibrational locomotion is also demonstrated. Overall, this work shows how these actuators and oscillators can bridge the gap between conventional and soft robots.
