Abstract Porous materials are widely studied for water purification and treatment as they can function as efficient adsorbents for harmful chemical wastes with their high specific surface areas. Among various types of porous materials, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising adsorbents for organic pollutants although the general powder form of MOFs largely limits their recyclability in practical applications. Herein, highly crystalline MOF particles are incorporated into agarose (AG) to fabricate highly recyclable MOF aerogels. Along with greatly improved recyclability, these MOF aerogels also achieve eco‐friendliness and cost‐effectiveness because AG is highly abundant in nature and can be easily modified. Typically, MOF aerogels are synthesized by uniformly dispersing MOF particles into the AG solution. The resulting MOF aerogels show significantly improved efficiency for dye adsorption. It is believed that this fabrication method for the preparation of MOF aerogels is highly versatile and it can be extended to other types of MOFs for different applications including environmental remediation, energy storage and conversion, and sensing.

A General Approach to Shaped MOF‐Containing Aerogels toward Practical Water Treatment Application

Abstract Though solar energy‐driven steam generation is promising for cleaning water, the water evaporation efficiency has to be enhanced further. Herein, 3D reduced graphene oxide (RGO) decorated cellulose acetate filter (RGF) evaporators are fabricated by immersing the porous cellulose acetate filters (CFs) in a suspension of graphene oxide, followed by drying and chemical reduction for efficient solar steam generation. The RGO sheets can absorb solar light and convert solar energy to thermal energy, while the hydrophilic and porous CFs with lots of vertical channels are responsible for transporting water to the top evaporation surfaces and accommodating the RGO sheets. In addition to gaining thermal energy from direct solar energy absorption and conversion, the sidewall of the RGF evaporator can also gain additional thermal energy from the surrounding environment as long as the sidewall temperature of the RGF evaporator is lower than the surrounding environment temperature as a result of the cooling effect of the evaporation. Driven by both solar energy and environmental energy, the RGF evaporator achieves a high water generation rate of ≈ 2.81 kg m −2 h −1 with an energy conversion efficiency of ≈ 130.2%, and high efficiencies in cleaning seawater and wastewater are also demonstrated.

Reduced Graphene Oxide Decorated Cellulose Acetate Filter Evaporators for Highly Efficient Water Evaporation and Purification Driven by Solar Energy and Environmental Energy

Abstract Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) has attracted global attention as an important approach for water purification and desalination. The related photothermal materials based on 3D biostructures are promising due to their abundance and easy accessibility. Here, it is shown that surface‐carbonized bamboo (SC‐bamboo) as a photothermal material exhibits outstanding ISSG performance due to its multilevel functional biostructures. On a microscopic scale, the bamboo's air‐filled parenchyma cells promote thermal insulation while its vascular bundles ensure rapid water transport. On a macroscopic scale, a unique concave structure at the bamboo nodes concentrates water and heat in a confined region and the air‐filled hollow chambers in bamboo internodes also ensure thermal insulation. These multilevel functional structures of SC‐bamboo result in a solar‐thermal conversion efficiency up to 93.63% ± 1.57% under 1 kW m −2 irradiation, surpassing most biomass‐derived materials ever reported. Considering bamboo's low cost and convenience, this work sheds light on the design and fabrication of readily accessible, multilevel functional structure for efficient photothermal‐conversion devices.

Surface‐Carbonized Bamboos with Multilevel Functional Biostructures Deliver High Photothermal Water Evaporation Performance

Abstract Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) has received increasing attention in both industry and academia, and is considered a method with great potential for wastewater treatment and desalination. These practical applications require materials that fulfil several requirements: being low cost, being scalable in terms of processing, being environmentally friendly, and having a high, stable optical–thermal conversion efficiency of solar vaporization. Currently, biomass materials show very promising prospects for ISSG systems. Here, it is observed that bamboo charcoal (BC) possesses a series of unique advantages that make it a highly efficient ISSG device. The broadband light absorption and the arched and porous structural features of BC fulfil all the basic requirements of an ISSG device in localized heating, heat management, and water supply. The self‐contained arched BC device demonstrates high evaporation efficiency (84% under 1 sun radiation) and superb stability under strongly acidic, strongly alkaline, and intense light environment conditions. More importantly, the porous BC device can provide stable fresh water production that simultaneously promotes the purification of water via evaporation by heating. Finally, the low cost, environmentally sustainable, mechanically robust, and long‐term stable BC device is a potential opportunity for wastewater treatment and desalination in underdeveloped areas.

Arched Bamboo Charcoal as Interfacial Solar Steam Generation Integrative Device with Enhanced Water Purification Capacity

Abstract All‐solid‐state lithium–sulfur batteries (ASSB‐LiS batteries) are considered among advanced candidates for next‐generation energy storage systems, as they break with restrictions and limitations that liquid electrolytes impose on lithium‐ion batteries and lithium‐sulfur batteries (LiS‐batteries), meaning enhanced safety and higher energy densities. However, investigations under realistic conditions on pouch cell level are challenging, as it is necessary to implement a scalable preparation method for sheet‐type cathodes with high sulfur utilization and loading. In this study, a solvent‐free process to prepare free‐standing cathode sheets with low binder content down to 0.1 wt% PTFE is demonstrated. The contribution of binder and electrolyte on the conversion reaction of sulfur is discussed. Sheet‐type cathodes reach nearly theoretical sulfur utilization of 1672 mAh g S −1 and outstanding reversible capacity retention with 72% of initial discharge capacity after 400 cycles by adapting cut‐off voltages to the stability window of the electrolyte. Furthermore, an all‐solid‐state pouch cell is demonstrated using the dry‐film cathode, which is successfully tested for 50 cycles at different C‐rates. Thickness monitoring of the cell stack gives fundamental insights into the volume change and breathing behavior of both cathode and anode.

Mechanistic Insights into the Cycling Behavior of Sulfur Dry‐Film Cathodes

Abstract Phthalates have become a widespread environmental pollutant that has severe implications for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. They are found in various sources, including industrial processes, consumer products, and food packaging, resulting in significant environmental contamination. Their persistence and ability to bioaccumulate present significant risks, especially impacting reproductive, developmental, and endocrine systems in humans. This review explores how phthalates function as mixed micropollutants, adding complexity to their evaluation and control in environmental systems. It also focuses on remediation strategies using novel biotechnological approaches, such as enzymatic degradation, genetic engineering, microbial remediation, and nanotechnology‐based approaches. Enzymatic degradation utilizes specific enzymes for the breakdown of phthalates, thereby, transforming them into less toxic metabolites. Novel genetic engineering techniques have opened possibilities for improving the breakdown of phthalates by microorganisms, offering potential solutions for more efficient remediation. Nanotechnology‐based approaches showcase the effectiveness of nanomaterials in absorbing and breaking down phthalates on a molecular scale. This review also highlights the importance of microbial consortia and biochar‐microbial composites for environmental restoration. The unique contribution of this review lies in its comprehensive analysis of advanced biotechnological strategies for phthalate remediation, emphasizing the synergistic potential of novel techniques to protect and safeguard the environment for future generations.

Sustainable Approaches for Managing Phthalate Pollution: Navigating Challenges, and Establishing the Future of Environmental Protection

Abstract The concentrated alkaline passivates the monolithic electrode for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) industry. Herein, a surface engineering of cathodic protection via one‐step co‐electrodeposition of P into NiCuV is presented and the achieved monolithic electrode exhibits an enhanced electrochemical catalytic behavior and constant durability with a feedback potential of −0.75 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under an extremely high current density of 1A cm −2 for more than 270 h in alkaline media. The strategy of cathodic protection optimises the charge density redistribution by forming a phosphate surface layer. This preserves the particular metal (alloy) phase from oxidation while also modulating the heterarchical porous structure through P incorporation. Furthermore, an anion‐exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) with the NiCuVP serving as the HER catalyst and the NiFeCr LDH as the OER catalyst is constructed, which exhibits a current density of 912 mA cm −2 at 2 V at 80 °C with 30 wt.% KOH electrolytes. The resultant factors for activity and durability such as the electrochemical specific area, redox behaviors and surface hydrophilicity are also systematically discussed. This research presents a practical protocol for the anticorrosion and active enhancement of AWE and AEMWE cathodes.

Surficial Engineering of Cathodic Protection Strategy via P‐Doped NiCuV Monolithic Electrode for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Media

Abstract Agrivoltaic greenhouses combine controlled environment agriculture and photovoltaics in one plot of land to simultaneously address the global challenges of renewable energy and sustainable food production. Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) benefit these systems by providing additional design flexibility, tuning light transmission for plant growth while generating electricity. Herein, design guidelines for LSCs in agrivoltaic greenhouses are determined given the two competing priorities of light utilization, crop yield and energy generation. Using a comprehensive model, the impact of LSC design choices on the greenhouse environment, energy generation, crop yield, and economic value in 48 locations across the United States is evaluated. It is shown that the solar cell coverage ratio and the greenhouse's heating demands determine the energy offset provided by the LSC. For improving crop yield, luminophore selection should maximize transmitted red light. The sensitivity of the economic value to crop yield, thus dictating luminophore selection for optimizing plant growth, is demonstrated. LSC greenhouses are as profitable as conventional greenhouses generally for states below 40 °N. Future improvements to LSC manufacturing may allow previously unprofitable LSC greenhouses to become economically viable in northern states. This work showcases the broad design space and strong potential for LSCs in agrivoltaics.

Design Guidelines for Luminescent Solar Concentrator Greenhouses in the United States

Abstract In triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), the main obstruction to the application as a sustainable energy source is their triboelectric loss. Therefore, it is necessary to develop TENGs with significant charge‐holding capacity. This study introduced a TENG device using nickel oxide–copper oxide (NC) nanoparticles (NPs)‐doped polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) electrospun nanofibers and nitrile gloves as tribonegative and tribopositive materials, respectively. The ratio and weight percentage of NC NPs on the PVDF surface are studied and optimized to improve the TENG performance. With the addition of 6 wt% 50:50 ratio of NC (NC55) NPs to the PVDF matrix, the negative surface static potential of the composite nanofiber (6PNC) attained a saturation value of −560 V after 6 h. This is 2.9 times higher than the surface static potential of the neat nanofiber (0PNC −190 V). Compared with the 0PNC TENG device, the optimized 6PNC device displayed 7.1‐fold (57–408 V), 6.3‐fold (1.6–10.2 µA), and 8.6‐fold (17–147 nC) improvements in open‐circuit voltage, short‐circuit current, and surface charge, respectively. Finally, the device is used to charge various capacitors and illuminate 100 LEDs. It is operated effectively using low‐power electronics and demonstrated considerable potential for use in smart wearable sensors.

Enhanced Charge Holding Capacity of PVDF Nanofiber Using NiO‐CuO Nanoparticles‐Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Energy and Wearable Electronic Applications

Abstract Hybrid semiconductor‐metal nanostructures are promising candidates for converting light into chemical energy by photocatalytic hydrogen production. However, many photocatalysts are prone to photocorrosion which limits their long‐term stability and thus their long‐term functionality needed for commercial applications. This study provides an in‐depth insight into the photocorrosion‐induced changes altering the chemical and photophysical properties of platinized CdSe‐seeded CdS nanorods (CdSe/CdS/Pt) during the photocatalytic hydrogen production from aqueous ethanol solutions at very high pH values. Using a combination of mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, with in situ absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, it is shown that the ligand shell consisting of 11‐MUA does not directly contribute to the generated hydrogen, although it is gradually degraded by present OH • radicals. Instead, the degradation of the ligand shell first leads to higher reactivity over time and finally to aggregation of the photocatalyst once a sweet spot is crossed. The inorganic CdSe/CdS/Pt particles are then reacting with OH • radicals to break apart into different pieces to transform into polymeric sulphur and Cd 2+ . This shows that the presence of OH • radicals can be very beneficial as an effective hole scavenger but can also lead to degradation of the whole colloidal nanostructure at longer reaction times.
