Abstract Anosmia and ageusia, the loss of sense of smell and taste, respectively, are common symptoms experienced by recovering COVID-19 patients. Thus far, there have been limited proven beneficial treatment options to treat anosmia and ageusia. This case report presents the positive effects of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) on anosmia and ageusia after viral infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. OMT focuses on enhancing lymphatic drainage and decreasing inflammation. Techniques treat key somatic dysfunctions to balance the autonomic nervous system and to improve cranial motion and restore motion to improve function. Key cranial bone restrictions including the vomer and nasal bones were addressed in this case. Following treatment, the patient was able to regain the ability to smell and taste, improving patient quality of life. After treatment, his symptoms improved consistently, and he regained his normal sense of smell and taste 4 days after initial treatment. This case presentation serves to demonstrate the potential of incorporating OMT on acute post COVID-19 patients with symptoms of anosmia and ageusia.

Abstract A method of collecting data by history taking and physical examination that lends itself to holistic evaluation of the patient is organized around neurologic, nutritional-digestive, endocrine, psychologic, circulatory-respiratory, genitourinary-psychosexual, and musculoskeletal models. To conserve the physician's time, all the examinations that can be done with the patient in a single position are grouped, and observations are dictated at once to an assistant to acquaint the patient with normal and abnormal results. Although the procedures seem lengthy as described, they can be carried out in a visit of reasonable length.

Abstract Due to the increasing prevalence of back pain in America, multiple treatment styles have been developed to address the variety of structures that can be contributing to the patient's ailment. The high ilium sacroiliac (HISI) tender point can be easily addressed and often relieves low back pain due to its relation to the pelvis and sacroiliac joint. The traditional treatment position is not always well tolerated amongst patients with lumbar, hip, or knee pathology. Using this modified treatment approach, we can address this tender point while respecting these limitations and providing safe and sustainable body mechanics for the operating physician. This article also discusses the additional indications, contra-indications, and problem-solving techniques regarding this treatment.

Abstract This article reviews the methods used to teach osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) from the inception of the profession in the 19th century through the 21st century. Past and current osteopathic literature contains very few references to psychomotor skills training methods used in the OMM lab. Faced with this paucity of information, suggestions for improving the traditional demonstration/imitation model of instruction are given. These suggestions are derived from the science of learning (SL), Simulation-Based Medical Education (SBME), Evaluation Science (EV), and insights gleaned from sim lab student assessment research. The future of osteopathic pedagogy is discussed in relation to advances in neuroscience, technology, and the need to preserve the uniqueness of the osteopathic profession. Kirkpatrick’s method of training evaluation is suggested as a paradigm for assessing curriculum changes and measuring goals set on departmental, college and professional levels.

Osteopathic Manipulation Skills Training: Past, Present, and Future

Abstract Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy (PHT) provides a challenging diagnosis for clinicians due to limited evidence-based research. Presenting as chronic pain originating at the ischial tuberosity, PHT can progress to entrap the sciatic nerve, resulting in proximal hamstring tendinopathy-related sciatic nerve entrapment (PHTrSNE). This case expands the understanding of PHT by describing the osteopathic assessment and treatment of a runner with PHTrSNE. A 24-year-old female marathoner presented to the neurology clinic with a unique running gait: a left leg circumduction, or “leg whip,” that presented only when running. She also reported constantly dull hamstring pain, which occasionally elicited a sharp, shooting pain from her lower gluteal muscles to mid-hamstrings. Activities such as prolonged sitting and intense running exacerbated the sharp pain. On examination, the patient displayed ischial tuberosity tenderness and positive tests for hamstring tendinopathy. Evaluation with EMG/NCS showed mild chronic denervation of the left tibialis anterior muscle. A treatment plan for the patient’s PHTrSNE was created based on the principles of the neurological model of osteopathic medicine. Patients presenting with chronic hamstring discomfort accompanied by sharp, shooting pain may benefit from the diagnostic and therapeutic approach outlined in this study.
