Despite the potential to grow and earn more profit through export, the seaweed sector is dealing with several difficulties, including challenges in the production faced by smallholder farmers. Farmers have managed their seaweed farming by implementing several risk management practices. This study examined the effect of farmers’ risk management practices on seaweed production and the determinants of seaweed production risk management practices. This study utilized data from a survey of 100 farmers in Takalar Regency, a key seaweed production area in Indonesia, along with insights from a focus group discussion (FGD) with seaweed experts. A Cobb-Douglas production function and logistic regression were employed. The findings unveiled that seaweed farmers’ risk management practices had positively boosted their seaweed production. The findings also highlighted that such factors as education level, farming experience, farm size, and weather risk influenced the farmers’ practices of dealing with the production risk. Understanding the effect of risk management practices on farm production and the determinants of production risk management practices could assist policymakers in designing effective policies and farmers in being more innovative in their coping strategies to mitigate production risk, leading to improved productivity and income. The prioritized risk management practices for seaweed production focused on diversifying planting locations and harvesting under hot temperatures to mitigate production risks. In contrast, practices such as changing seeds, relocating, and adjusting cultivation methods were also crucial but less widely applied.

Effect of Risk Management Practices on Production of Seaweed Farming: Evidence from Takalar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Farmer empowerment is crucial for agricultural development, yet its effectiveness often depends on how well strategies align with farmers' needs. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the farmer empowerment strategies according to the farmer assessment. The research employs a qualitative multi-case study approach, utilizing in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with farmer group chairmen and members. The study reveals varying levels of effectiveness across seven government-implemented empowerment strategies. These three strategies comprised developing agricultural product marketing systems, consolidating agricultural land, and providing access to science and technology were unfamiliar to participants. The organic fertilizer training strategy was deemed effective in improving competence and profits. Extension services were considered effective in enhancing competence, profits, and productivity. However, institutional strengthening strategies were seen as ineffective in developing farmer groups into cooperatives. Financing facilities through People's Business Credit (PBC).

Farmer Assessment of the Effectiveness of Empowerment Strategies to Increase Farming Profits

农民对增强赋权策略以提高农业利润的有效性评估

The Indonesian beef consumption increases sharply during Ramadan and made a difference between supply and demand. The research aimed to study the demand pattern of burger patties and determine a suitable forecasting method compared between quantitative and intervention forecasting methods. The actual demand was intervened by experts based on reasons such as supply shortage, holidays, promotion, and government projects. The daily sales of burger patties were collected for a year. Then, the data were divided into training and testing data. Later, time-series forecasting was performed by software. Then, the best forecasting method for daily data was selected between Individual forecasting and Top-Down forecasting. Similarly, for weekly data, the best forecasting method was compared between aggregate forecasting and Bottom-Up forecasting. Then, repeat the process for the intervened sales data. The result revealed that the mean absolute percentage error was improved after intervention by about 3.64%-58.83%. The combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches improved forecast accuracy. In addition, the aggregate level or weekly sales forecast had higher forecast accuracy than the disaggregated level. The Bottom-Up forecast performs better than the aggregate forecast. Hence, we recommended the company plans based on weekly data and implement Every Low Price to reduce the demand fluctuation.

The Use of Intervention Approach in Individual and Aggregate Forecasting Methods for Burger Patties: A Case in Indonesia

印尼汉堡肉饼个体与总体预测方法中的干预方法应用研究

As a major share expenditure for the poor, rice is attributed as a strategic food commodity in the Indonesian economy. For many decades, the Indonesian rice market has been intervened by the price regulation. The Indonesian government had set two types of rice price policies of 2016 and 2017 with the argument of price stabilization during the last five years. This study aimed to investigate the effect of price policies of 2016 and 2017 on the domestic price dynamics in the Indonesian rice market. This study used daily price series taken from the Cipinang Wholesale Rice Market in Jakarta within the period of October 1st, 2014, until February 12th, 2018 covering 10 rice varieties. The role of price policy on the price dynamics was evaluated by using a multivariate error correction model (MVECM). The empirical findings confirmed that generally, these price policies had different effects on the price dynamics which proposed different reactions from the different rice varieties both in magnitude and signs. The variations were also found regarding the short-run and long-run behavior. Generally, the findings suggested a relatively small elasticity of the policy on the prices.

The Effect of Price Policy on Price Dynamics: Empirical Evidence in Indonesian Rice Market at Wholesale Level

价格政策对价格动态的影响：印度尼西亚大米批发市场的实证证据

Entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector produces creative, innovative, and independent farmers who can improve farm performance. Therefore, this research aimed to determine the impact of individual characteristics and entrepreneurship on rice farming performance. The method employed in this research was a descriptive method to provide a qualitative description of individual characteristics and entrepreneurship in the performance of rice farming. The research was executed in one of the rice-producing centers in Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan. The simple random sampling method was used in selecting farmers with 150 respondents selected as the sample size. Furthermore, the research variables involved were individual characteristics, farmer’s entrepreneurship, and rice farming performance. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and observations, and analysis was performed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SMART-PLS software. The results showed that individual characteristics and entrepreneurship had a significant and positive effect on rice farming performance. Consequently, it can be concluded to improve rice farming performance, farmers suggested strengthening their characteristics, particularly those related to farming motivation, and enhancing their entrepreneurial characteristics through their task and outcome-oriented behavior.

The Effect of Individual Characteristics and Entrepreneurship on Rice Farming Performance

The global demand for organic produce has surged, with notable growth among Thai consumers. However, within Thailand's organic agricultural sectors, supply chain obscurity has impeded the understanding and resolution of emerging challenges associated with meeting this rising demand. Public interest has traditionally centered on mainstream economic sectors, resulting in inadequate attention to the sustainable organic farming supply chains. This study aims to explore the complexities of current sustainable organic supply chain configurations in Thailand, addressing gaps that lead to suboptimal planning and non-sustainable practices. Utilizing the Integration Definition for Function Modeling (IDEF0) framework, this research collected data from key stakeholders through in-depth interviews. Participants included representatives from each stage of the supply chain, providing comprehensive insights into the operational dynamics. The analysis identified several critical challenges within the supply chain, including insufficient collaborative planning, reduced productivity, inaccurate demand forecasting, ineffective budgetary planning, and inadequate cold chain management. These challenges highlight the fragmented nature of the current supply chain and the need for strategic improvements. To address these shortcomings, the study suggests integrating technological advancements in demand planning, operations, and budgeting, fostering collaboration among supply chain members, and forming strategic partnerships with cold chain management service providers. These recommendations aim to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of Thailand's organic produce supply chain, ensuring it can meet increasing global and domestic demands effectively.

Investigating the Structural Composition of Contemporary Sustainable Organic Agriculture Supply Chains: A Case Study from Thailand

探究当代可持续有机农业供应链的结构组成：来自泰国的案例研究

Local chickens have considerable potential to be developed and are reared as a source of animal protein and income. The production of local chickens is distributed across Minahasa Regency under a traditional free-ranging system. This study aims to assess the base area of local chicken farming and to determine the distribution of the superior commodity through the growth and share of local chicken production. Assessing the base area of the region for local chicken production can serve as the basis for the evaluation and design of policies. This study utilized a location quotient (LQ) approach in the empirical works in the regency and district. This analytical tool was applied to analyze the dynamics of the economic base in the cases of districts in Minahasa Regency, Indonesia. The analysis results denoted that 17 of 25 districts in Minahasa Regency ranked among the top base areas for local chicken development, as indicated by the highest LQ coefficients. Concerning the district potential base area, three districts fell into the superior category, four districts belonged to the static category, and 15 districts were in the potential category. This evidence reflects the potential and prospects of local chicken farming and its development plans as a leading commodity in Minahasa Regency. Encouraging farmers to maintain and develop livestock enterprises could support the provision of animal protein for consumption. There has been hope for the future of the local chicken commodity thanks to its inclusive development in resource-rich base areas.

Assessment of Local Chicken Production Base Area in Minahasa Regency: A Location Quotient Approach

Hydrogen has been recognized as a global sustainable alternative sustainable energy source. The government of Indonesia has been working on a novel idea to launch the hydrogen industry. Accordingly, research and development of ecologically acceptable hydrogen manufacturing methods are essential. Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is one of the recent techniques to create hydrogen. This research investigated the techno-economics of hydrogen production in Indonesia using SCWG. Oil palm trunks (OPT), a plentiful byproduct of palm oil plants, are the primary raw materials employed in this industry. This study extracted data from several research publications on SCWG-related hydrogen generation and performed computational analysis using several economic parameter equations. According to the analysis, with a potential OPT source of around 34 million tons, the plant could manufacture 304,166.67 tons of OPT per year, generating 365,000 tons of hydrogen annually. The production cost was projected to be USD 1,179,409,295, with a fixed capital investment of USD 1,178,853,030.47. The expected annual income was USD 1,825,000,000. This assessment yielded an ROI of 60% and an NPV of USD 1,888,889,382.70. The IRR value was 26.96%, with a PoT of 2.49 years. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the price of hydrogen significantly affected the values of IRR and PoT. Therefore, the government must determine the exact price of hydrogen to ensure its sustainability.
