Telehealth and Medicine Today

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is undergoing an Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) across the entire enterprise, with the goal of creating a shared Federal Electronic Health Record (FEHR). In 2017, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) joined with the Department of Defense (DOD) to plan for the transition to a modernized, combined EHR platform to capture the healthcare delivery of both active-duty members and veterans. The VHA anticipated transitioning to the new EHR across all medical centers nationally over a period of 10 years—”the largest EHR transition in history.” The first rollout was in October 2020 in Spokane, Washington, USA.

Telehealth and virtual health have expanded greatly since the pandemic, driven by demand for access and the acceptance of technology as a means to expand care delivery and monitoring. Healthcare providers are becoming more strategic in how they are leveraging telehealth solutions within their portfolio and solution providers are using a variety of cutting edge technologies to expand the options and benefits telehealth can deliver. Given the hunger for data and the goals of preventive and precision care, telehealth will experience continued investment in 2025. Convergence of innovative and emerging technology will help telehealth solutions delivernew capabilities for providers and individuals.

Predictions That Will Guide Telehealth Through 2025

The implementation of virtual nursing enables remote support, reducing the workload of bedside nurses and enhancing patient care. Its use expanded in response to workforce shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since gained approval from both bedside staff and patients, while also helping to mitigate staff burnout. Virtual nursing interventions have been shown to improve patient safety and the quality of care. At our institution, virtual nursing is facilitated through an artificial intelligence-assisted care platform, delivered via mobile carts equipped with tablets or two-way wall-mounted cameras with audio and visual capabilities. This discussion will highlight virtual nursing initiatives across our academic flagship hospital and seven satellite hospitals, which commenced in June 2022, as well as our vision and goals for future expansion.
