In this work, we have demonstrated for the first time that a cyanogen-glucoside-rich cassava plant (Manihot esculenta) is highly efficient in phytoextraction (up to 88%) of nickel to obtain a type of bio-ore comprising Ni nanoparticles (NPs) supported on the recovered plant material. Up to 1251 ppm was extracted from low Ni concentration soil by the cassava plant, as was measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The bio-ore was used as a resource for preparing a heterogeneous catalyst (Ni@CassCat), in which Ni NPs are supported on mesoporous biochar following a calcination step. Ni@CassCat was characterized using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray, powder X-ray diffraction, N2-sorption techniques, and ultraviolet–visible spectrometry. Subsequently, Ni@CassCat was used as a heterogeneous catalyst to hydrogenate carbon dioxide (CO2) to formate with a turnover number of 485. Furthermore, the recyclability of Ni@CassCat was demonstrated. This work demonstrates a two-pronged approach to sustainability, transforming two waste streams (mine tailings and CO2) to value.

Catalytic Conversion of CO2 to Formate Promoted by a Biochar-Supported Nickel Catalyst Sourced from Nickel Phytoextraction Using Cyanogen-Rich Cassava

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major component of volcanic gases and ore-forming hydrothermal fluids. However, CO2 has contrasting effects on the speciation of different metal complexes and ore mineral solubility, but a molecular understanding of its effects is lacking. To address this deficiency, we conducted ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the behavior of AuCl(aq) in the CO2–H2O system at 340 °C and 118–152 bar and 800 °C and 265–291 bar for CO2 mole fractions (XCO2) of 0.1–0.9. The MD simulations indicate that the linear [H2O–Au–Cl]0 structure of gold chloride is not affected by CO2 at XCO2 up to 0.8 at 340 °C and XCO2 up to 0.5 at 800 °C, whereas the "dry" [AuCl]0 species predominates at XCO2 > 0.8 at 340 °C and XCO2 > 0.5 at 800 °C. The number of water molecules hydrating the AuCl(aq) complex decreases systematically with an increasing CO2 mole fraction and increasing temperature. Results of Au solubility experiments at 340 °C in CO2–H2O solutions show that the addition of CO2 does not enhance Au solubility. We conclude that hydrated chloride species with linear geometry are the main means for transporting gold in CO2–H2O–HCl fluids and that Au solubility decreases in CO2-bearing hydrothermal fluids as a result of the decrease in hydration of the Au complexes. This contrasts with the behavior of divalent transition metals (e.g., Fe, Co, Ni, and Zn). We propose that the different solubility behaviors of Au and base metals are due to the changes in translational entropy as a result of the changes in coordination geometry (and associated hydration) of the complexes with increasing XCO2. The first-shell coordination of Au(I) complexes remains constant over wide ranges of XCO2, whereas first-row divalent transition metal complexes undergo entropy-driven geometric changes with a decreasing water activity.

Hydration Is the Key for Gold Transport in CO2–HCl–H2O Vapor

Soil organic matter (SOM) is a complex mixture of small molecules and biopolymers that are active in various biogeochemical processes. However, the chemical diversity of biopolymer-derived SOM remains poorly explored. Identifying this diversity is important because global environmental changes may well alter SOM chemistry, as field experiments are beginning to show. Here, organic solvent-extractable (DcMe-SOM), base-hydrolyzable (KOHHy-SOM), and CuO-oxidizable (CuOOx-SOM) SOM fractions from a forest with a long-term nitrogen addition experiment were sequentially extracted and characterized by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) coupled with negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) or atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI). From DcMe-SOM to CuOOx-SOM, the total number of assigned formulas, average O/C ratio, aromaticity, and unsaturation degree of SOM continuously increased, while the average m/z and H/C ratio decreased. Moreover, the dominant chemical category shifted from lipid-like components to phytochemical- and protein-like components. Complementary to ESI, APPI effectively facilitated detection of additional compounds with low polarity. With long-term nitrogen addition, the average m/z, unsaturation degree, aromaticity, and oxidation state of SOM increased, and more aromatic nitrogen-containing formulas were detected in CuOOx-SOM. Our study demonstrates that chronic nitrogen deposition in forests alters both the small molecules and biopolymers of SOM fundamentally.

Characterization of Sequentially Extracted Soil Organic Matter by Electrospray Ionization and Atmospheric Pressure Photoionization Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry

Summertime HONO concentrations were synchronously measured at two (agricultural and nonagricultural) sites in the North China Plain (NCP). Daytime HONO (1.4 ± 0.6 ppbv) and HONO/NO2 ((12 ± 8)%) over the agricultural field after fertilization were found to be remarkably higher than those before fertilization, implying strong HONO emission from the fertilized fields. Synchronous enhancements of HONO and O3 after fertilization at both sites suggested that the emitted HONO accelerated the local and the regional O3 pollution. HONO budget analysis further revealed that its emission was significantly enhanced after fertilization. Soil HONO emission flux and its uncertainty were estimated and discussed. The estimated emission flux exhibited a distinct diurnal variation with a noontime maximum. The net OH production rate from HONO photolysis greatly exceeded that from O3 photolysis over the agricultural field, and their maximum ratio of 4.7 was obtained after fertilization. We provide field evidence that fertilized fields in the NCP act as a strong HONO source, which accelerates daytime photochemistry, leading to an increase of regional photo-oxidants such as O3. Considering the severe O3 pollution in the summer NCP and that the large area of the agricultural field is regularly treated with high fertilization amount in this region, HONO emission should be taken into account in the regional air quality deterioration.

Evidence for Strong HONO Emission from Fertilized Agricultural Fields and its Remarkable Impact on Regional O3 Pollution in the Summer North China Plain

Iron(III) oxalate, Fe3+(C2O4)33–, is a photoactive metal organic complex found in natural systems and used to quantify photon flux as a result of its high absorbance and reaction quantum yield. It also serves as a model complex to understand metal carboxylate complex photolysis because the mechanism of photolysis and eventual production of CO2 is not well understood for any system. We employed pump/probe mid-infrared transient absorption spectroscopy to study the photolysis reaction of the iron(III) oxalate ion in D2O and H2O up to 3 ns following photoexcitation. We find that intramolecular electron transfer from oxalate to iron occurs on a sub-picosecond time scale, creating iron(II) complexed by one oxidized and two spectator oxalate ligands. Within 40 ps following electron transfer, the oxidized oxalate molecule dissociates to form free solvated CO2(aq) and a species inferred to be CO2• – based on the appearance of a new vibrational absorption band and ab initio simulation. This work provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the first mechanistic steps in the photolysis reaction and presents a technique to analyze other environmentally relevant metal carboxylate photolysis reactions.

Naturally occurring bedded salt deposits are considered robust for the permanent disposal of heat-generating nuclear waste due to their unique physical and geological properties. The Brine Availability Test in Salt (BATS) is a US-DOE Office of Nuclear Energy funded project that uses heated borehole experiments underground (∼655 meters depth) at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in the bedded salt deposits of the Salado Formation to investigate the capacity for safe disposal of high-level, heat generating nuclear waste in salt. Uncertainties associated with brine mobility near heat-generating waste motivates the need to characterize the processes and sources of brine in salt deposits. Intragranular halite fluid inclusions are a potential source of brine that can migrate under temperature gradients toward heat sources. We developed a methodology to measure the stable isotopic compositions of water (δDVSMOW, δ18OVSMOW) in brine from halite fluid inclusions using Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy that accounts for memory effects using a unique reference-sample-reference bracketing approach and that minimizes sample size requirements. We applied this approach to halite samples obtained from WIPP and compare these data to seeped brines collected from horizontal boreholes at WIPP after drilling at ambient conditions. The stable isotope compositions that we obtain for halite fluid inclusions (δ18OVSMOW = +3.24 ± 0.53‰, δDVSMOW = −25.3 ± 5.1‰, ±1σ, n = 5) generally agree with previous measurements and likely reflect a combination of syn-depositional and/or postdepositional processes. The seep brines are isotopically distinct (δ18OVSMOW = +3.46 ± 0.84‰, δDVSMOW = +7.3 ± 3.5‰, ±1σ, n = 35) and instead resemble evaporated seawater. We discuss our results in the context of prior WIPP-proximal waters and lay the groundwork for using stable isotopes of water in brine as a tool to assess the heat-induced mobilization of halite fluid inclusions in ongoing heating experiments that comprise the Brine Availability Test in Salt.

Measuring the Stable Isotope Composition of Water in Brine from Halite Fluid Inclusions and Borehole Brine Seeps Using Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy

By utilizing quantum chemical calculations, we inspect four various reaction pathways for the formation of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) on interstellar medium in two interstellar conditions, i.e., gas phase and metal surface, respectively. We found their reactivity and feasibility of a chemical reaction under both conditions. Additionally, we probe how HCN interacts with metal surfaces to determine the thermodynamic parameters and reactive energetic barriers of the chemical reactions in cosmic environments. The alternative pathways created by the metal considerably lowered the reactive potential barriers, resulting in a notable increase in the reaction rate. From this theoretical research, it is revealed that the catalytic potential of metal surfaces in ISM significantly enhances the feasibility of chemical reactions and becomes the most favorable route for the formation of HCN.
