The current study is a conceptual replication of Ahuja, Chudoba, Kacmar, McKnight, and George’s (2007) model of the proximal and distal antecedents of the turnover intentions of information technology (IT) professionals. Whereas the original study focused on ‘IT Road Warriors’, those that spend most of their work life away from home; we applied the original study’s hypotheses and model to the more general context of IT professionals. Results from a sample of 301 IT professionals housed in an on-site internal IT department were mixed. Consistent with Ahuja et al. (2007), the relationships between exhaustion, organizational commitment, and turnover intention were supported. Also, the influence of work-family conflict on exhaustion, but not organizational commitment, was confirmed. In contrast to Ahuja et al. (2007), the replication study found that fairness of rewards was much more important to in-house IT professionals than autonomy. Future research should investigate the boundaries of Ahuja et al.’s (2007) model of turnover intention for various sub-populations within the IT profession, such as system administrators, contract workers, and perhaps CIOs. Researchers may also want to explore factors outside the current model that may impact the turnover intention of IT professionals such as organizational and professional identity and boundary spanning.

Mitigating Turnover Intentions: Are All IT Workers Warriors?

This paper provides the materials used to conduct the Basoglu, Fuller, and Valacich (2012) study of individuals’ recall of information within technology-mediated teams (i.e., virtual teams). In the Basoglu et al. (2012) study, three input factors—visual artifacts (i.e., a computer-generated image of each team member), team size, and work interruptions—were manipulated to assess their influence on a person’s ability to recall important characteristics of their virtual team members. In the current paper, we provide step-by-step instructions for the experimental design, procedures, consent form, and the questionnaire administered by Basoglu et al. (2012). Our objectives are to provide researchers with the necessary materials to replicate the Basoglu et al. (2012) study and use its methodological techniques to guide their own research.

Open Materials Discourse: Enhancement of Recall within Technology-Mediated Teams Through the Use of Online Visual Artifacts

We re-examine “Evaluating Journal Quality and the Association for Information Systems Senior Scholars Journal Basket…” by Lowry et al. (2013). They sought to use bibliometric methods to validate the Basket as the eight top quality journals that are “strictly speaking, IS journals” (Lowry et al., 2013, pp. 995, 997). They examined 21 journals out of 140 journals considered as possible IS journals. We also expand the sample to 73 of the 140 journals. Our sample includes a wider range of approaches to IS, although all were suggested by IS scholars in a survey by Lowry and colleagues. We also use the same sample of 21 journals in Lowry et al. with the same methods of analysis so far as possible. With the narrow sample, we replicate Lowry et al. as closely as we can, whereas with the broader sample we employ a conceptual replication. This latter replication also employs alternative methods. For example, we consider citations (a quality measure) and centrality (a relevance measure in this context) as distinct, rather than merging them as in Lowry et al. High centrality scores from the sample of 73 journals do not necessarily indicate close connections with IS. Therefore, we determine which journals are of high quality and closely connected with the Basket and with their sample. These results support the broad purpose of Lowry et al., finding a wider set of high quality and relevant journals than just MISQ and ISR, and find a wider set of relevant, top quality journals.

There is a considerable controversy regarding laptop usage in the classroom, with some studies arguing the benefits of laptops in the classroom and others suggesting that a laptop free environment is superior. In an effort to address this controversy, Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014) conducted three different experiments to determine whether typing notes on a laptop or handwriting notes in a notebook impacted academic performance. This research replicated the first of these experiments in a classroom environment as opposed to a lab environment. The original study found that students who did not use laptops for note-taking in class performed better on conceptual application questions, while our study found that students who do not use laptops for note-taking in class performed better on factual recall questions instead. Our updated findings suggest there is more work to do to understand the longhand versus laptop debate.

Examining Longhand vs. Laptop Debate: A Replication Study

In this study, we carry out a methodological replication of the research done by Choi et al. (2015) published in Information System Research. In the original study, the authors integrate the privacy and teasing literatures under a social exchange framework to understand online involuntary exposures. The original study was conducted on students from Southeast Asia. Our study uses a significantly larger sample of college students in the United States. Our replication results show that whereas most of the hypotheses supported by the original results on behavioral responses replicate with high consistency (8 out of 12 hypotheses), the results that deal with the effects of network commonality on perceived privacy invasion and perceived relationship bonding did not replicate (4 out of 12 hypotheses). These results could stem from a failed manipulation of network commonality. We look into the possible rationales for this and show what would be an effective manipulation in our context. Further, we expand the original study by testing an additional embarrassing scenario catered to our subject pool. The results suggest that perceived privacy invasion and perceived relationship bonding affect individual’s behavioral responses to embarrassing exposures.

Involuntary Embarrassing Exposures in Online Social Networks: A Replication Study

This paper presents a methodological and conceptual replication of Stieglitz and Dang-Xuan’s (2013) investigation of the role of sentiment in information-sharing behavior on social media. Whereas Stieglitz and Dang-Xuan (2013) focused on Twitter communication prior to the state parliament elections in the German states Baden-Wurttemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, and Berlin in 2011, we test their theoretical propositions in the context of the state parliament elections in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany) 2021. We confirm the positive link between sentiment in a political Twitter message and its number of retweets in a methodological replication. In a conceptual replication, where sentiment was assessed with the alternative dictionary-based tool LIWC, the sentiment was negatively associated with the retweet volume. In line with the original study, the strength of association between sentiment and retweet time lag insignificantly differs between tweets with negative sentiment and tweets with positive sentiment. We also found that the number of an author’s followers was an essential determinant of sharing behavior. However, two hypotheses supported in the original study did not hold for our sample. Precisely, the total amount of sentiments was insignificantly linked to the time lag to the first retweet. Finally, in our data, we do not observe that the association between the overall sentiment and retweet quantity is stronger for tweets with negative sentiment than for those with positive sentiment.

Emotions and Information Diffusion on Social Media: A Replication in the Context of Political Communication on Twitter

This study is a conceptual replication of Bharadwaj (2000) investigating the impact of IT capability on a firm’s financial performance. The original study demonstrated that firms with superior IT capability will deliver superior financial performance manifested by higher profit ratios and lower cost ratios. However, conflicting findings emerged regarding the relationship between IT capability and a firm’s financial performance (Chae et al., 2014). Furthermore, in the past decade, advancements in statistical analysis, such as panel data modeling techniques that were not used in these past studies have provided more robust analytical techniques to observe patterns over time. Hence, incorporating the conceptual foundations as in prior studies on IT capability (e.g., Bharadwaj, 2000; Santhanam &amp; Hartono, 2003), we re-investigate the impact of IT capability on a firm’s financial performance but do so by using a large longitudinal dataset and leveraging the power of panel data analysis. Our findings are consistent with the results of Bharadwaj (2000), Santhanam and Hartono (2003), and Choi and George (2016), suggesting that IT capability has a significant positive impact on financial performance. Our results do not support the findings of Chae et al. (2014), who found no association between IT capability and financial performance. We discuss the implications of our findings for the continued use of the theoretical framework of IT capability derived from the resource-based view.

Revisiting the Role and Impact of Information Technology Capability

Disruptive innovation (DI) provides an explanation for firms' success and failure in the business economy. Building on Karimi and Walter (2015), whose study ascertains dynamic capabilities (DC) in responding to digital platforms and firm performance, this study extends their model by examining the effect of relational capabilities as DC in international and national executive search consultancies (CERS) based in Brazil. CERS have been fundamentally changing their traditional operating business models because of digital platforms. Thus, a survey questionnaire from 141 CERS executives measured the impact of DC on CERS performance and digital platforms. The findings highlight that DC is positively associated with digital platform capacity and CERS performance, as Karimi and Walter (2015) also highlighted. We believe that the findings impact practitioners because this study is original in the context of CERS and valuable for new business model formation, showing that DCs are relevant in any dynamic business scenario. Theoretically, this study enhances DC and DI theories, confirming that digital platform capabilities are a powerful strategic choice to reinvent core business functions and accelerate innovativeness.

On Behalf of Digital Innovation: A Replication Study on International and National Executive Search Consultancy Firms

This study is a conceptual replication of Chen, Zhang, Gong, Lee, and Wang’s (2020) study that examines factors influencing the intention to decrease problematic Information Systems (IS) use. In contrast with Chen et al.’s smartphone gaming context, we apply their theoretical model to the context of digital streaming services. Aligned with the original study, we tested the model using a scenario-based survey. Results are largely consistent with the original study, albeit with several exceptions. Our findings support that protection motivation theory (PMT) is useful in explaining decreasing problematic use in situations of threats. Threats are the negative consequences caused by problematic streaming service use. Users experience fear when they believe the negative consequences are likely to occur, and the consequential harm will be serious if they occur. When threatened, users are more motivated to decrease use if they believe decreasing use is effective in mitigating the threat and they have confidence in executing it. However, such motivation is not influenced by costs incurred by decreasing use. Further, we validate that invoking fear can break users’ viewing habits, which promotes their intention to decrease use. Yet, such an effect is limited. Future research might explore other factors that are effective in breaking users’ viewing habits.

Decreasing the Problematic Use of an Information System: A Conceptual Replication in the Context of Digital Streaming Services

Use of information technology (IT) remains a key concern for organizations. This article presents a conceptual replication of Burton-Jones and Straub’s (2006) study, exploring the effect of IT Use operationalization richness – lean and rich – on Performance. We used 352 valid responses from Amazon MTurk through an online survey. Consistent with the original study, the hypothesis was tested by using the Structural Equation Modeling technique. Our results – which indicated support for the same hypothesis in the original study – suggest that the richer the IT use operationalization, the higher the individual Performance.
