NOTES AND DOCUMENTS: CORRECTIONS TO TENANTS’ COPIES OF COURT ROLLS BEFORE 1400

The purpose of the empirical work discussed in this paper was to explore the theme of audience engagement with digitised archive data in different formats. A comparison is drawn between experiences of interacting with an archive presented as a narrative non-fiction audio performance and the same core material displayed as online text and images. The findings derive from an analysis of data collected in interviews with participants familiar with both versions of the archive: (1) as a podcast series entitled Diary of the War, and (2) photographs in the LornaL journal on the Blipfoto platform. The interviewees exhibited greater levels of engagement with the podcast series as a form of entertainment that prompts learning and generates emotional responses. They also found the podcast series a more flexible platform for engagement. They believed that the Blipfoto journal offers greater affordances in respect of access to contextual information, and authenticity. Key to these findings is the addition of contextual resources to the core archive in each presentation. This contribution provides insights on the role of curation in promoting audience engagement with digital presentations of collections, and the extent to which archive material in digitised formats should be left to ‘speak for itself’ .

Peter Pheasant, a wealthy young man about town who died of smallpox in 1703, kept Mary Thompson as his mistress and cast her off before he died. In an alternative account of the events, he married Thompson and she was entitled to dower from his estate after his death. The truth of these two claims was bitterly contested between Pheasant’s brothers and Thompson in the ecclesiastical courts. Thompson was backed by her friend Delarivier Manley, a well-known playwright and satirist, who hoped for a financial reward. Manley shared information with the feminist poet Sarah Fyge Egerton, who unexpectedly testified against her, leading to the estrangement of the two women. The broad outlines of the story were published in 1787, based on evidence from what was known as Doctors’ Commons, but since then it has been thought that the original records were lost. They have now been rediscovered in London Metropolitan Archives, and in combination with material at Lambeth Palace Library, The National Archives and the Norris Museum they enable the case to be reconstructed in great detail, as well as its background and some of its consequences. The extent to which anyone was telling the truth remains far from certain.

This article is a reflection on the project carried out by Oxford Brookes Learning Resources Directorate to celebrate 20 years of the National Brewing Library at Oxford Brookes University. Reflections are outlined in five ‘lessons’, covering elements from the practical to the progressive, with regard to how this event was planned and executed. The lessons cover key learning points that invite more ambitious plans for activating special collections in the future through an integrated mix of local concerns and traditional and progressive perspectives.
