The ecosystem services of mangroves are well known and can be subdivided into provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting. The regulating services of mangroves are extremely crucial to combating the effect of climate change on the estuarine ecosystem. The present study reveals that there are five widely available species of mangroves that are found to be dominant in the study area, namely Sonneratia apetala, Avicennia marina, Avicennia alba, Avicennia officinalis, and Excoecaria agallocha, that are present in all 24 selected stations to assess the impact of mangrove Above Ground Biomass (AGB) on the pH level of the surrounding estuarine water. It is evident from the investigation that the biomass of mangroves has a potential to retard the rate of acidification in the estuaries of the Indian Sunderban. The present study was therefore conducted during the pre-monsoon season of 2023 based on the ground-level pH and Above Ground Bionmss (AGB) of dominant mangrove species obtained from 24 stations along the estuaries of the Sunderban Delta Complex. The significant positive correlation found between these two variables (r = 0.9588; p&lt;0.01) reveals that mangroves effectively buffer and mitigate the adverse impact of acidification.

Mangroves of Indian Sundarbans: Nature Based Buffer Against Estuarine Acidification

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease resulted with high blood glucose levels due to oxidative stress that leads to many complications. Natural compounds derived from herbal plants are alternative source that increasing globally in the process of diabetes drug development. The present study investigates the potential of plant natural compounds for its therapeutic capability to treat diabetic mellitus. Phytochemicals were extracted and purified from seeds of the plant Caesalpinia bonducella. The functional group in Caesalpinia bonducellawas confirmed by UV-VIS and FTIR spectroscopic technique. The seed extract's in vitro antioxidant properties in various concentration (0.25 to 1 g/mL) were carried out against the DPPH and H2O2 onion radical scavenging assay. In vitro studies of anti-diabetic activity were also evaluated by inhibiting key enzymes that are involved in glucose metabolism such as alpha amylase. The seed extract was found to inhibit the enzyme responsible for glucose metabolism and so maximum inhibition was observed in 0.25 mg/mL and the compound was found to be highly reactive against free radicals. In the DPPH assay, the plant seed extract has a maximum inhibitory activity of 92.04% at high concentration. Additionally, for the H2O2 scavenging test, the inhibition of the plant seed extract at 0.75 g/mL concentration was 88.3%. This suggests that the plant’s phytocompounds may offer therapeutic benefits for the treatment of diabetes and conditions linked to oxidative stress. In vivo investigations of the study's findings are further necessary to validate the phytocomplex's efficacy and open the door to the creation of cutting-edge treatments for antioxidants and diabetes.

Anti-Diabetic and Free Radical Scavenging Activity of Phytochemicals from Caesalpinia bonducella

The rise in bacterial resistance to antibiotics necessitates the development of new antimicrobials. Pathogenic microorganisms from hospitals, communities, and environments pose significant health risks exacerbated by the uncontrolled use of antibiotics, highlighting the urgent need for innovative solutions. To address antibiotic resistance, analysed the antimicrobial activity of Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes using biochemical assays with some antibiotics: tetracycline, erythromycin, trimethoprim, rifampicin, hygromycin, and streptomycin. The study employed agar diffusion and microtiter methods to assess antimicrobial efficacy. Results indicated that all bacterial cultures were sensitive to the antibiotics tested. Bacillus subtilis exhibited high susceptibility to tetracycline, erythromycin, hygromycin, and streptomycin, with moderate susceptibility to trimethoprim and rifampicin. S. aureus showed sensitivity to the same antibiotics but to a lesser extent than B. subtilis. S. pyogenes were also susceptible to tetracycline, erythromycin, hygromycin, and streptomycin. Notably, the non-pathogenic B. subtilis demonstrated greater antibiotic susceptibility than the pathogenic S. aureus and S. pyogenes. All three bacteria exhibited consistent antibiotic susceptibility, demonstrating inhibition zones for all seven antibiotics. This study aids in developing effective treatments for resistant bacteria, contributing to combating bacterial diseases.

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Bacillus subtilis Various Antibiotics

Casts produced by earthworms have high nutritional value and water holding capacity and act as an excellent soil ameliorating agent. In the present study, earthworm casts were collected from three different ecological habitats of Tumakuru by hand picking method and were analyzed for their nutritional status. The earthworm casts and surface soil samples were collected simultaneously from each study site (forest area, agriculture area and industrial area) in separate polythene-labelled bags. The collected samples were examined for physico-chemical parameters. The statistical values of all the parameters of castings and soil samples have shown that the worm cast collected from the forest site contains a significantly higher level of NPK than the worm cast collected from the other two study sites. Further, the nutritional quality of forest surface soil was higher than the other two sites. Among the three study sites the nutritional value of worm casts were in the order FS&gt;AS&gt;IS to their respective surface soil. However, the low nutritional value of vermicast in agriculture and industrial sites might be attributed to the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides for cropping and dumping of industrial waste on the surface soil of respective sites. The study concludes that the nutritional status of earthworm casts contributes significantly to improving soil quality in a natural sustainable way.

Nutritional Status of Earthworm Castings from Diverse Ecological Habitats: A Comparative Study

The spider fauna has a significant role in the agro-ecological system in the cultivable lands across the Agra region. The survey covered an area of 28.5 sq km, and the spider webs were collected by various sampling methods during the nocturnal and diurnal periods. A total of twenty-nine spider species belonging to nine families were collected for web spinning as well as non-web spinning spiders. During the period of nine months, which include the late summer, monsoon, and pre-winter seasons, Abundant web spinning spiders, predominantly from the family Araneidae, were widely spread, while the least number of spiders were found in the family Thomisidae. Individual web-spinning spider species of the Araneidae were predominantly represented by the genus Argiope sp, with a small representation by Miseumenavatia. The largest and strongest web is spun by the genus Neoscona sp and a fragile web by Uloborus. The largest web is spun individually by Neoscona and a group/community based on Cytrophora. The reduction in the number of ground-dwelling spiders is mainly due to the impact of the use of pesticides by farmers. The agro ecosystem of Agra is impacted by the large use of pesticides by the farmers. The cultivation of potato, wheat, and mustard in Agra. Produces 40% quantity of potato, wheat, and mustard in India and their cultivation seems to give better natural niche for spider than other field crops.
