Wireless channel properties in industrial environments can differ from residential or office settings due to the considerable impact of heavy machinery that triggers intricate multipath propagation effects and strong blockage effects.Previous investigations on wireless propagation in factories often consisted of empirical models, that is simple analytical formulas based on measurement data.Unfortunately, they usually lack in flexibility, since they seldom include geometrical parameters describing the industrial scenario and therefore turn out reliable only in industrial scenarios sharing the same propagation characteristics as those where the measurements were performed.In response to this limitation, this article harnesses the power of Machine Learning to model propagation markers like path loss, shadowing, and delay spread in the industrial environment.By employing Machine Learning techniques, the objective is to achieve flexibility and adaptability in modeling, enabling the system to effectively generalize across diverse industrial scenarios.The proposed model relies on a combination of predictive algorithms, including a linear regression model and a Multi-Layer Perceptron, working collaboratively to model the relationship between the considered propagation markers and input features like frequency and machine size, spacing, and density.Results are in fair overall agreement with previous studies and highlight some trends about the sensitivity of the propagation parameters to the considered input features.

Within the framework of the recent agri-food technological advancement, the design and validation of a methodology for the water content estimation in the Carasau bread manufacturing process is herein presented. Following a thorough evaluation of the dough dielectric properties, a suitable antenna layout has been selected, pointing out the advantages in the choice of a contactless narrow-band antenna in comparison to wide-band and dual-band ones. The presented simulated results are then validated using a prototype sensor and an ad hoc measurement system to confirm the antenna ability to discriminate among doughs with different water content. In addition, an accurate analysis of possible sources of misinterpretation of the results is presented.

Preliminary Design and Test of a Microwave Inline Moisture Sensor for the Carasau Bread Industry

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a cost-effective and relatively fast additive manufacturing (AM) technique, utilizing a laser source to selectively melt metallic powder and produce objects with intricate geometries. Nevertheless, establishing effective real-time monitoring methods for this process remains a notable challenge. The interaction between the laser and metallic powder leads to the ejection of particles, referred to as spatter, with varying sizes, velocities, trajectories, and spatial distributions. Literature indicates that the behavior of these spatters can serve as a potential indicator of defect generation during the AM process. This study investigates the potential for employing a well-established electromagnetic (EM) model to monitor the scattering properties of spatters. This approach serves as a potential tool to identify variations in spattering behavior that might be associated with defect generation during the process. The study explores how parameters, such as spatial distribution and the number of particles (in a given volume), impact the scattering properties, accuracy, and efficiency of the method. Changes in spattering spatial distribution resulting from variations in processing parameters, including laser power, scan speed, and chamber pressure, were investigated. Some of these conditions resulted in the formation of a deep keyhole zone. The results demonstrated that monitoring radar cross-section (RCS) of the spatters could serve as a metric to distinguish between conditions that lead to a deeper keyhole and those that either do not create a keyhole zone or result in a shallower keyhole. Additionally, the concept of the "sphere-of-influence (SoI)" is used as a tool for improving computational efficiency and potential use in method validation. The insights from this study have the potential to contribute to the advancement of real-time LPBF monitoring, presenting possibilities for improved quality control and defect detection in AM processes.

Electromagnetic Scattering Properties of Metal Powder Cloud for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) Additive Manufacturing (AM)

The Physical Optics (PO) method is used to derive simplified expressions to compute the radiation electric fields of planar graded-index and geodesic lenses based on a parallel-plate waveguide (PPW) implementation. If the PO method is combined with ray-tracing (RT) techniques, the resulting RT-PO procedure is capable of computing radiation patterns and gain of the PPW-based lens antennas when their apertures have a general shape and the electric field is vertically polarized. The RT-PO method is validated by comparing it with the full-wave simulation results of the commercial software ANSYS HFSS for three application cases. The results show that the RT-PO approach is not only very efficient from a computational point of view but also accurate, thus being a very convenient analysis/design tool for this kind of antenna.

A Dual-Band Circularly-Polarized Transmitarray Antenna With Simultaneous Low Side-Lobe and Cross-Polarization Level

Traditionally, radio frequency detection or ambient spectrum sensing has required high-performance spectrum analyzers and RF signal analyzers, leading to relatively high costs due to the need for a local oscillator and signal mixer. To overcome this challenge, we propose a low-cost, substantially simplified solution utilizing a stretchable rectenna, a microcontroller unit (MCU), and feedback control systems. By exploiting the dynamic correlation between the resonant frequency and the tensile ratio of the stretchable antenna, the incoming frequency can be determined by recording the maximum rectifier DC power output as a function of the electromechanically controlled tension ratio of the stretchable antenna. Our measured results indicate that a frequency measurement range of 1.8 GHz to 2.5 GHz can be achieved through careful design of the stretchable antenna and broadband rectifier. We have experimentally demonstrated an over-the-air far-field frequency sensing system based on this concept, showcasing significant advantages in power consumption, cost-effectiveness, and simplicity when compared to state-of-the-art RF spectrum analyzers.

Adaptive Radio Frequency Sensor Enabled by Electromechanically Controlled Stretchable Rectifying Antenna Systems

A novel methodology for designing Chipless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags realized using the Additive Manufacturing technologies and exhibiting a high number of identification states is proposed and investigated. An encoding scheme based on the resonances and anti-resonances of the input impedance of the resonator is employed for identifying the tag, which is achieved by exploiting the set of zero-crossing points of the tag reactance. A tolerance analysis is also performed to avoid any ambiguity in the reading process and to minimize the redundancy, thus providing unique electromagnetic signatures which are also suitable for anti-counterfeiting applications. Several prototypes have been fabricated and tested to assess the practical implementation of the proposed encoding scheme.
