A sexual morph of a Diaporthe species was collected from a dead aerial branch of Camellia sp., in Yunnan Province, China.Multi-locus phylogeny of internal transcribed spacer (ITS), betatubulin (BT), translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-a), calmodulin (cal) and Histone (H3) genes showed that our strain clustered with Diaporthe manihotia (CBS 505.76) with high statistical support.A comprehensive description, photographs of micro-morphological characteristics and a phylogenetic tree to show the placement of the taxon are provided.This is the first host report of D. manihotia from Camellia sp.

Rust fungi show unique systematic characteristics among all fungal groups. A single species of rust fungi may produce up to five morphologically and cytologically distinct spore-producing structures thereby attracting the interest of mycologist for centuries. In India, the research on rust fungi started with the arrival of foreign visiting scientists or emigrant experts, mainly from Britain who collected fungi and sent specimens to European laboratories for identification. Later on, a number of mycologists from India and abroad studied Indian rust fungi and contributed a lot to knowledge of the rusts to the Indian Mycobiota. The establishment of Imperial Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) at Pusa (Bihar) in 1905 was the key achievement of pre-independent India which laid the foundation for many useful research on Indian rust fungi and in producing many renowned mycologists. This study presents the history of the study of rust fungi in India with complete information from various journals, books, websites and institutions involved. Detailed information of decadal publication records of rust fungi in India published in various journals have been included. Apart from the addition of a complete list of literature on Indian rust fungi, the future scope of research on rust fungi in India along with problems and challenges are also discussed. In a nutshell, this compendium will be quite useful for mycologists, especially beginners to find all available information on Indian rust fungi in one document.

Current status of research on Rust fungi (Pucciniales) in India

Much interest has been brought to microbial pigments owing to their broad-spectrum of industrial applications coupled with their safe and eco-friendly characteristics. Soil fungi have been explored as a feasible resource of natural colouring agents and have been used as a safer alternative to synthetic hues. In addition to the colouring ability, many of the fungal pigments are known to possess antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic properties, which extend their use in a multidimensional angle. The present review discusses the different pigments derived from soil fungi, the influence of culture conditions on pigment production, various methods of extraction techniques, diverse pigment characterization techniques and their applications. In addition to the advantages of fungal pigments, a lot of challenges pertaining to the use of fungal pigments are also delineated.

A review on pigment producing soil fungi and its applications

Medicinal mushrooms have provided a natural source of bioactive compounds since ancient times. Ganoderma is such a mushroom, which has worldwide recognition as a medicinally important mushroom. In this review, the authors provide a detailed summary of indigenous Ganoderma research in Namibia, looking at the ethnomycology, biological activity, physicochemical properties, food quality and safety, as well as cultivation of this mushroom. In this paper, all available records of Ganoderma research in Namibia were retrieved from the University of Namibia Institutional Repository with the keyword “Ganoderma”. Ten theses and four peer-reviewed articles with a total of 10 authors and 12 subjects, including ethnomedicinal plants, domestication, active compounds, medicinal and AIDS were reviewed. The main objective of this review is to guide researchers on the direction for future research and product development of Ganoderma in Namibia. The literature review highlights the potential to establish research and development activities of indigenous Namibian Ganoderma species. The study identifies an important knowledge gap on Ganoderma research, such as the complete morphological and molecular description of species, regulation and standardization of metabolites and characterization of novel compounds identified in indigenous Namibian Ganoderma. The domestication and cultivation of medicinal and edible mushrooms provide an excellent opportunity to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of promoting good health and well-being (SDG 3), nutrition (SDG 2: Zero Hunger), and income generation (SDG 1: no poverty).

Ganoderma research activities and development in Namibia: A review

This article is the second in the Asian Journal of Mycology Notes series, wherein we report 50 new fungal collections distributed in two phyla, six classes, 23 orders and 38 families. The present study provides descriptions and illustrations for three new species (Acolium yunnanense, Muyocopron cinnamomi and Thyrostroma ulmeum), 44 new host records and new geographical distributions and three new reference collections. All these introductions are supported by morphological data as well as the multi-gene phylogenetic analyses. This article provides a venue to publish fungal collections with new sequence data, which is important for future studies. An accurate and timely report of new fungus-host or fungus-county records are essential for diagnostics, identification and management of economically significant fungal groups, especially the phytopathogens.

Hymenopellis species are taxonomically well-studied and widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions. It is well-documented in eastern and north America and can also be found in several Asian countries, including Thailand. In this study, we collected a wild Hymenopellis specimen in northern Thailand. The morphological and phylogenetic analyses inferred from a combination of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and the large subunit (nrLSU) of ribosomal DNA confirmed the taxonomic placement of the collected specimen to the genus Hymenopellis. Limited studies have documented the cultivation of Hymenopellis species. So far, only China commercially cultivates this mushroom. Pure mycelium was isolated from the internal tissues on malt extract agar (MEA). Sorghum grain was used in spawn preparation. Spawns were inoculated in bags of four different substrate formulas, and sawdust was used as the main substrate and other additives. The cultivation process was conducted for four months. Hymenopellis sp. (MFLU 19-1658) has an average yield ranging from 10.8±17.9 to 115.5±73.5 grams of basidiomata per substrate formula with an average biological efficiency ranging from 3.0±5.0 to 32.1±20.4% with the highest values exhibited by (A) sawdust (98%) + CaO (1%) + gypsum (1%), followed by (B) sawdust (30%) + corncobs (60%) + rice bran (8%) + CaO (1%) + gypsum (1%). The nutrient contents of the cultivated basidiomata were also determined in this study. The results indicated that the obtained basidiomata contained carbohydrate, crude fat, crude fiber, and protein at 49.2, 8.0, 16.5, and 17.8%, respectively. This study is the first to document the nutrient contents of the genus Hymenopellis.

The pantropical Zingiberaceae family is among the most threatened monocotyledonous plants, with numerous species endemic to the Philippines, and thus, is an ideal host to study fungal endophytes. In this study, we determined the occurrence and diversity of fungal endophytes associated with the Philippine endemic ginger Vanoverberghia sepulchrei Merr. All major plant organs, i.e., leaf, pseudostem, rhizome, and root, were surface-sterilized to isolate Vanoverberghia-associated fungal endophytes (VFE). A combination of morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences derived from ITS were used to identify selected isolated fungi. Our results showed the isolation of twenty fungal morphospecies, and these were identified as belonging to the genera Bjerkandera, Cladosporium, Colletotrichum, Cosmospora, Diaporthe, Fusarium, Leptographium, Mucor, Nigrospora, Perenniporia, Phomopsis, Phyllosticta, Phytophthora, Pseudopithomyces, Rhizopus, and Trichoderma. The results of this study paved the way for the first report of fungal endophytes from the Philippine endemic ginger.

A new species, Stephanonectria ellipsoidea, was isolated from decaying fruit in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China. It is characterized by pale orange colonies, densely clustered, irregularly branched conidiophores, cylindrical phialides, and hyaline, ellipsoidal conidia. Its morphology fits well with the generic concept of Stephanonectria. This species is closely related to S. keithii based on phylogenetic analysis of concatenated LSU and ITS sequences. The combination of morphological observation and molecular data supports the erection of the new species.

A new species of Stephanonectria (Bionectriaceae) from southwestern China

Mushrooms are a good source of antioxidants with a range of health benefits owing to their bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity and nutritional composition of mushrooms cultivated on four different encroaching bushes as substrates. Antioxidant activity was measured using reducing power and DPPH scavenging assays. The IC50 values ranged from 0.380±0.098 mg/ml to 0.7780±0.007 mg/ml. The inhibition of the DPPH radical by PS extracts cultivated on Terminalia sericea (0.380±0.098 mg/ml) showed the highest activity compared to other mushroom extracts. All the mushroom species grown on different bushes showed an appreciable ability to reduce ferricyanide complex to ferrous form at different levels of concentration (0.063–1.00 mg/ml). TPC varied from 3.93 mg GAE/g to 8.016 mg GAE/g. TFC ranged from 0.515 mg QE/g to 12.1 mg QE/g, which showed a significant difference in the bush species at a p-value of less than 0.01. There was a significant difference in the interaction of bush substrates and mushroom species on crude protein and ash content at p-values of 0.01 and 0.015, respectively. In the current study, crude protein content ranged from 28.0% to 39.0%, with PF grown on Terminalia sericea having a high protein content. A significant difference in % NDF on mushroom species was found, where a variation was detected in HK35, while PF, PO, and PS showed a similar performance in % NDF. The study showed that ash content ranged from 5.77% to 17.9%. Percentage moisture ranged from 86.0% to 87.5%. A significant difference in mineral composition, with PO showing a high content of potassium (2.292%), PF showing a high content of sodium (0.059%), and PS showing a high content of phosphorus (0.746%) as compared to other mushroom species. Among the four different bushes, Combretum collinum (potassium 2.256%, sodium 0.05%, and phosphorus 0.74%) had the greatest effect on the mineral composition of the different mushrooms cultivated. In conclusion, mushrooms are accessible natural food rich in antioxidants, which may boost the immune system against oxidative damage and can be used as potential sources of therapeutic agents.

Antioxidant activity and nutritional composition of different mushroom extracts grown on different bush encroachers as substrates in Namibia

In this study, we describe a new species, Cystoderma lignicola, collected from rotten woods in the temperate region in Yunnan Province, southwestern China. Our new species was described based on macro- and micro-morphological characteristics and molecular data of combined internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and large subunit (nrLSU) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences. Cystoderma lignicola is characterized by its light orange to brown cap, globose, subglobose, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores, with 4–5 × 3–4 μm diam. Phylogenetically, C. lignicola showed a sister clade to C. chocoanum with statistical support of SH-aLRT/UFB = 90.9/90 in maximum likelihood analysis and statistical support of BPP = 0.99 in the Bayesian analysis.
