Researching regional differences of psychological characteristics: Some practical tips

Two studies investigated whether a brief dose of an environment influenced subjective wellbeing and the perceived restorativeness of the setting; and if either varied by place preference. Participants (NS1 = 211; NS2 = 338) were randomly allocated to view one environment online for 30-seconds, rated perceived restorativeness and indicated state mood and emotion. In study 1, mood did not differ by environment. In study 2, the emotions happy, relaxation and desire were lowest and anger and fear/anxiety highest in the urban street condition. In both studies, perceived restorativeness was lower in the urban street condition and the interaction between preference/environment type significant. Nature settings were rated more restorative than urban streets; the effect was greatest with a nature preference. A similar interaction effect existed for positive emotion in study 2. Virtual brief doses of environments can elicit differences in emotion but not mood (which should be differentiated) and place preference should be considered in future studies.

Neural Dynamics of Development of Nature Empathy in Children: An EEG/ERP study

Intergroup biases have been studied on an individual level for decades, but recent research has examined intergroup bias as a regional phenomenon. Aggregated responses on bias tests from individuals in geographic proximity have shown to relate to important society-level discriminatory outcomes. In the present research, we examined the pressing issue of gender inequalities in employment using this regional perspective on intergroup bias. Using large scale open-access datasets, we investigated how psychological measures of regional gender stereotypes associating men with careers and women with families (traditional gender stereotypes) related to the representation of women in the workforce and parental leave policies in 35 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries across 5 continents. In countries with higher traditional gender stereotypes, we found that women were less represented in the workforce and, specifically, in manager positions. Regional traditional gender stereotypes were inconsistently related to parental leave policies. These findings suggest that the framework of regional intergroup bias may be fruitful to explain regional differences in gender disparities.

Regional traditional gender stereotypes predict the representation of women in the workforce in 35 countries across five continents

Prior research on eco-anxiety, or anxiety and worry about mounting environmental issues, has almost exclusively relied on cross-sectional trait reports. Consequently, little is known about how it is related to focal outcomes, such as well-being (e.g., happiness, meaning in life) and pro-environmental behavior, over time in daily life. To help address this issue, we conducted a preregistered daily diary study, wherein Canadian undergraduates (N = 132) provided trait reports and two weeks of daily reports (n = 1439) on eco-anxiety, positive and negative affect, meaning in life, and pro-environmental behavior. At the trait level, average scores on eco-anxiety were fairly low; yet, higher scores were associated with less positive affect and more negative affect and pro-environmental behavior. Average scores on eco-anxiety were even lower at the state level but nonetheless exhibited notable within-person variability. On days that people felt greater eco-anxiety, they also reported greater negative affect and pro-environmental behavior. Lagged analyses from one day to the next provided some evidence that eco-anxiety increases future negative affect. No significant relationships between eco-anxiety and meaning in life emerged at both levels of analysis. Together, these findings demonstrate that eco-anxiety can be productively conceived of—and studied as—both a trait and a state.

From Interdependence to Pro-Environmental Behavior: Development and Validation of the Preference for Explanations in Terms of Interdependence (PETI) Scale for Children

Discussions about refugee status often center around two assumed characteristics of their circumstances. One, that, because they fled their countries to seek safety, their migration decisions lacked choice. And two, that their migration will be temporary, as they may wish to return to their home country after things stabilize. However, it is unclear how these perceptions are related to refugee inclusion. To address this gap, we conducted two studies with members of communities that host refugees from the recent wars in Syria and Ukraine. Participants were surveyed in Lebanon, Jordan, Germany, the Netherlands (Study 1, N = 762), and Poland (Study 2, N = 798). We found that the more residents of receiving communities perceived refugees as deprived of choice over their migration and willing to return to their home country as soon as possible, the more they supported more accommodating policies toward refugees. We also surveyed Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Germany, and the Netherlands (N = 910) about their control over migration and future migration intentions. Their responses suggest that members of host communities may underestimate the sense of control experienced by refugees.
