ABSTRACT Since 2019, the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI) has conducted health monitoring of pink salmon in Norway. The primary purpose of health monitoring has been to examine the presence of selected notifiable infections in pink salmon, but also to gain general knowledge regarding the health of pink salmon to inform assessments of risks to wild and farmed native salmonids. In 2023, post‐mortem examinations were performed on 184 pink salmon captured in rivers Lakselv, Tana, Neiden, Komagelva, Kongsfjordelva and Karpelv in the County of Finnmark, Norway. Tissue samples from 161 of these were analysed with specific PCR assays aimed at detecting infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV), viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV), infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV), piscine orthoreovirus genotype 1 (PRV‐1) and Renibacterium salmoninarum . In addition, cultivation methods were applied to detect the presence of cultivable virus and bacteria. ISAV, VHSV, IHNV PRV‐1 and R. salmoninarum were not detected by PCR. Furthermore, R. salmoninarum, Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and cultivable virus were not detected by cultivation. With the exception of the absence of PRV‐1, the results correspond to previous years' health‐monitoring projects.

Health Monitoring of Invasive Pink Salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha in Norway in 2023

ABSTRACT The study aimed to assess the impact of stocking density on the growth performance, survival rate and production of seabass ( Lates calcarifer ) fingerlings in floating net cages conducted at the Maheshkhali Channel, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. A triplicate group of seabass, with an average initial weight of 86.82 ± 1.9 g, was randomly stocked in floating net cages at densities of 15, 12, 10 and 8 fish m −3 , referred to as T 15 , T 12 , T 10 and T 8 , respectively. The fish fingerlings were supplied with freshly chopped sardine ( Sardinella fimbriata ) at 10% of their body weight for 4 months and 5% for 2 months, administered twice daily. The water quality metrics were measured fortnightly. The initial and the final proximate composition of seabass was not significantly different ( p &gt; 0.05). Upon completion of the experiment on the 180th day, the growth performance and additional measures, including final body weight, weight gain (WG), percent weight gain (PWG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency ratio (FER), survival rate and total production, were assessed. Comparisons of growth and yield demonstrated that fish stocking density significantly ( p &lt; 0.05) influenced growth and productivity. Fish cultivated at maximum density ( T 15 ) exhibited lower mean weights than those raised at lower densities. This study demonstrated that T 10 had better results for all growth and other metrics examined, indicating the appropriateness of this density. Therefore, it may be inferred that seabass exhibits optimal growth at a stocking density of 10 fish m −3 along the coast of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

ABSTRACT Inland aquaculture operations are practised all over the world, contributing about 62.6% of all farmed aquatic animals. This venture is increasing worldwide and outpacing the global market demand for fish and fishery products driven by competition with other animals, over‐population and over‐exploitation of wild capture fisheries. These operations expand globally, associated with the degradation of the culture environment due to poor aquaculture management practices and algal blooms due to nutrient influxes as well as high demand of quality fish feeds of affordable price. To overcome these challenges, sustainable, healthy and environmentally friendly alternatives including probiotics application must be adopted to achieve better production, profitability and productivity as well as a resilient culture environment. In this review, information on potential applications of probiotics in aquaculture (inland aquaculture) focused on sources, safety, approved probiotics for aquaculture, characteristics of probiotics, mode of applications and its potential use on pathogenic microbes control, fish haematological parameters, growth performance and stress responses, water quality parameter, anti‐nutritional factors and feed digestibility, limitation of using probiotics in aquaculture and lastly future perspectives on the probiotics application in aquaculture industry were reviewed and compiled for future sustainable aquaculture production and productivity and environmentally friendly. The review has also highlighted all probiotics application and their approved authority for use in farmed freshwater fish (Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus , Catfish Clarias gariepinus , rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and common carp Cyprinus carpio ) and their cultured environment worldwide. Therefore, the review has comprised all information on the potential benefits application of probiotics in an inland aquaculture for public documentation and also identifies gaps in the aquaculture industry that require further research and assessment.

Unlocking Potential Benefits on Applications of Probiotics in Inland Aquaculture Industry: A Review

ABSTRACT Many countries and regions around the world have been adversely affected by the invasive spread of the largemouth bass ( Micropterus nigricans ). The breeding practices developed in China can serve as a reference for these regions to manage this species scientifically while providing high‐quality protein for human consumption. As its introduction from Taiwan in 1983, the largemouth bass has become one of the most significant high‐quality freshwater farmed fish in mainland China. The country has developed new varieties that exhibit faster growth rates and enhanced adaptability to artificial compound feed, leading to widespread aquaculture across the nation. This article systematically reviews the technological advancements in the introduction, breeding, reproduction and rearing of fry and fingerlings of largemouth bass in China over the last 40 years. After summarizing the progress in general breeding as well as fry and fingerling rearing technologies, we analyse three successful early breeding and out‐of‐season breeding modes developed in China. The advancement of innovative and practical breeding and seedling technologies has addressed the challenges of natural breeding in regions with relatively low temperatures, where it is not feasible to raise local fry to a marketable size for consumption within the same year. This progress significantly enhances largemouth bass aquaculture in China.

A Review of Studies on the Breeding, Reproduction and Fry Rearing of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus nigricans) in China

ABSTRACT Aquaculture is becoming increasingly important for the world's food production. Recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) has a reduced water requirement and better possibilities for waste handling. Unfortunately, off‐flavours can be formed in RAS and concentrate on fish flesh. Off‐flavour compounds cause earthy, musty or other unwanted flavours to fish flesh that consumers find objectionable. Typically, off‐flavours are removed by depurating the fish in clean water, but it often takes from days to weeks to fully remove these unwanted flavours that causes additional costs to fish producers. Therefore, reliable methods to reduce the need for depuration are needed. In this study, two methods were investigated for the removal of off‐flavours in RAS rearing rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss : an advanced oxidation process (AOP) using a combination of ozone (O 3 ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), and a treatment with H 2 O 2 alone. Two treatments (AOP and H 2 O 2 ) and a control without oxidants were applied across nine identical experimental RASs for 8 h day −1 over 10 days, and selected off‐flavour compounds in water and fish were analysed. In fish, the concentrations of GSM and MIB were on average 776 and 962 ng kg −1 (AOP) and 688 and 919 ng kg −1 (H 2 O 2 ) compared to 1071 and 1205 ng kg −1 in the controls. The results showed that intensive oxidant treatments reduced the off‐flavour concentrations in the recirculating water and in fish, which can potentially lead to reduced depuration time and production costs. Further optimization of the treatment is needed to improve off‐flavour removal efficiencies.
