Abstract At present, insufficient works have provided insights into the application of adsorption to remove CO 2 in flue gas below room temperatures under ambient pressure. In this work, the effects of temperature, CO 2 partial pressure and moisture on dynamic adsorption characteristics for CO 2 are conducted for various adsorbents. Based on our findings, lower the adsorbing temperature can drastically enhance the adsorption of carbon dioxide over molecular sieves and activated carbon. Among various adsorbents, 13X molecular sieve shows highest adsorption capacity. With a concentration of 10% CO 2 in flue gas, the specific adsorption capacity of CO 2 over 13X molecular sieve is 0.11, 2.54 and 5.38 mmol/g at 80 °C, 0 °C and − 80 °C, respectively. In addition, the partial pressure of CO 2 also has a significant impact on the adsorption capacity. With the increment of the concentration of CO 2 from 1% to 10% under 0 °C, the specific capacity of 13X molecular sieve increases from 1.212 mmol/g to 2.538 mmol/g. Water vapor in flue gas can not only reduce the specific adsorption capacity of CO 2 due to competing adsorption, but also increase the heat penalty of molecular sieve regeneration due to the water adsorption. An overall analysis is conducted on the energy penalty of capture 1 ton CO 2 at various adsorption temperatures between − 80 °C and 80 °C, considering both the heat penalty of molecular sieve regeneration as well as the energy penalty for cooling the adsorber. It is found that the lowest energy penalty is about 2.01 GJ/ton CO 2 when the adsorption is conducted at 0 °C.

Abstract Nickel hydroxide-based devices, such as nickel hydroxide hybrid supercapacitors (Ni-HSCs) and nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries, are important technologies in the electrochemical energy storage field due to their high energy density, long cycle life, and environmentally-friendliness. Ni-HSCs combine the high-power density of capacitors with the high energy density of batteries, making them ideal for applications requiring rapid charge and discharge cycles. In contrast, Ni-MH batteries are known for their high energy density and stability, making them suitable for applications requiring sustained energy output. Although Ni-MH batteries have been commercialized for many years and Ni-HSCs have also been extensively investigated as a relatively new technology, there is no comprehensive review comparing their performance and mechanisms. Therefore, this review aims to provide a detailed comparison of these two devices. This comparative study focuses on three perspectives: historic development; working principles; and properties of nickel hydroxide in both devices. This summary could offer insight into selecting appropriate technologies for specific applications, guidance for materials development and understanding the fundamental mechanism driving their performance.

Abstract The development of economical and stable catalyst electrodes for industrial-scale seawater splitting is one of the current challenges in hydrogen production. The economical transition metals possess high electrical conductivity and offer the potential for designing electrodes with high intrinsic activity through appropriate modifications, thus holding promising applications in industrial contexts. Herein, a durable and economical self-supported bifunctional electrode (Fe@Ni) with high efficiency and large area is successfully constructed by one step in-situ deposition of iron on the porous structure of nickel foam (NF) via mild (298 K) electroplating method. Transition metals like iron and nickel offer high electrical conductivity and can be properly modified to achieve electrodes with high intrinsic activity. Due to the in-situ growth of cost-effective iron on the NF surface, the electrode surface morphology and electronic structure are reconstructed, which significantly improves the electrochemical activity surface area and electron transfer capability of the electrode. The hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) in simulated seawater (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl) require only 129 mV and 323 mV overpotentials to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Overall seawater splitting (OWS) achieves 10 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.49 V and with a faradaic efficiency of nearly 100%. More importantly, the bifunctional electrodes remain stable at industrial-level current density (1.0 A cm −2 ) for more than 50 days. More attractively, this work realizes the universal construction of large-area electrode for multiple metals (e.g., Fe, Cu, Al, etc . ) with mild and simple process, which provides a new strategy for the current research of energy and materials.

Abstract As a new type of composite two-dimensional material formed by the combination of Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) and two- dimensional (2D) MXenes, COF/MXene heterostructures (COF@MXene) inherit the stable porous two-dimensional structure of COFs and the excellent electrochemical performance and catalytic activity of MXenes, thus attracting widespread attention. Additionally, COF@MXene possesses various elemental affinity sites, efficient ion channels, and the ability to append various functional groups, which endow them with tremendous potential in electrochemical energy storage, energy conversion, and catalysis. Currently, there is a lack of extensive literature discussing the utilization of COF@MXene. The quest for enhanced physicochemical attributes through tailored modifications and composite strategies for COF@MXene is still a noteworthy hurdle. Furthermore, discovering novel application contexts that can harness the exceptional capabilities of these materials presents a formidable task. This review initiates with an exploration of the primary methodologies for synthesizing COF and MXene composites. Subsequently, it outlines the diverse applications of COF and MXene in energy storage, energy conversion, and environmental conservation. Lastly, it discusses the primary obstacles and future trajectories within these domains.

Innovative COF@MXene composites for high performance energy applications

Abstract Steam generating heat pump (SGHP) is a key technology for industrial decarbonization. For comprehensive evaluation of the feasibility and reliability of SGHP in different industrial sector, the work develops a thorough evaluation model for assessing the performance of SGHP by considering waste heat recovery, CO 2 trading value, and pollutant emission cost, in addition to the conventional evaluation criteria. This work presents a thorough comparison of the thermodynamic performance and sustainability of various types of SGHPs across different industrial sector. Additionally, the conflicting relationships between the coefficient of performance (COP) and exergy efficiency are balanced through the application of the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The results show that all the indexes of SGHP connected to an open heat pump (SGHPO) with different application scenarios are higher than those of SGHP connected to a flash tank (SGHPF). At the most unfavorable operating condition of the system, the COP minimum value is 1.31 and the exergy efficiency minimum value is 20.42%. These results indicate that replacing the coal-fired boiler with SGHP is feasible and the work could provide theoretical guidance for optimal design and equipment manufacture.
