Language communicators use acoustic-phonetic cues to convey a variety of social information in the spoken language, and the learning of a second language affects speech production in a social setting. It remains unclear how speaking different dialects could affect the acoustic metrics underlying the intended communicative meanings. Nine Chinese Bayannur-Mandarin bidialectics produced single-digit numbers in statements of both Standard Mandarin and the Bayannur dialect with different levels of intended confidence. Fifteen listeners judged the intention presence and confidence level. Prosodically unmarked and marked stimuli exhibited significant differences in perceived intention. A higher intended level was perceived as more confident. The acoustic analysis revealed the segmental (third and fourth formants, center of gravity), suprasegmental (mean fundamental frequency, fundamental frequency range, duration), and source features (harmonic to noise ratio, cepstral peak prominence) can distinguish between confident and doubtful expressions. Most features also distinguished between dialect and Mandarin productions. Interactions on fourth formant and mean fundamental frequency suggested that speakers made greater use of acoustic parameters to encode confidence and doubt in the Bayannur dialect than in Mandarin. In machine learning experiments, the above-chance-level overall classification rates for confidence and doubt and the in-group advantage supported the dialect theory.

Robust gender differences exist in the acoustic correlates of clearly articulated speech, with females, on average, producing speech that is acoustically and phonetically more distinct than that of males. This study investigates the relationship between several acoustic correlates of clear speech and subjective ratings of vocal attractiveness. Talkers were recorded producing vowels in /bVd/ context and sentences containing the four corner vowels. Multiple measures of working vowel space were computed from continuously sampled formant trajectories and were combined with measures of speech timing known to co-vary with clear articulation. Partial least squares regression (PLS-R) modeling was used to predict ratings of vocal attractiveness for male and female talkers based on the acoustic measures. PLS components that loaded on size and shape measures of working vowel space-including the quadrilateral vowel space area, convex hull area, and bivariate spread of formants-along with measures of speech timing were highly successful at predicting attractiveness in female talkers producing /bVd/ words. These findings are consistent with a number of hypotheses regarding human attractiveness judgments, including the role of sexual dimorphism in mate selection, the significance of traits signalling underlying health, and perceptual fluency accounts of preferences.

Examining vocal attractiveness through articulatory working space

Languages may differ in fundamental frequency of voicing (f0), even when they are spoken by a bilingual individual. However, little is known in bilingual/L2 acquisition research about simultaneous bilinguals. With the expectation that speakers who acquired two languages early use f0 differently for each language, this study measured f0 in English-Korean early bilinguals' natural speech. The f0 level was higher for Korean than English, regardless of gender, age, or generational status (early and late bilinguals did not differ). The f0 span showed a language-gender interaction: males' span was larger in Korean, while females' span was larger in English. This study demonstrates that languages differ in f0 independent of speaker anatomy and suggests that children may acquire these differences in early childhood.

Cross-linguistic <i>f</i>0 differences in bilingual speakers of English and Korean

Several applications in spatial audio signal processing benefit from the knowledge of the diffuseness of the sound field. In this paper, several experiments are performed to determine the response of a tetrahedral microphone array under a spherically isotropic sound field. The data were gathered with numerical simulations and real recordings using a spherical loudspeaker array. The signal analysis, performed in the microphone signal and spherical harmonic domains, reveals the characteristic coherence curves of spherical isotropic noise as a function of the frequency.

The three parts of ISO 9614 describe methods for the determination of the sound power level of noise sources. According to these standards, measured sound power levels must be qualified by comparing several sound field indicators to given criteria. This procedure is investigated by analytical calculations with monopole and dipole sources. Their sound fields are superposed with extraneous free and diffuse sound fields. When the ISO 9614 method is applied to these cases, it turns out that the signed pressure intensity indicator is well suited to qualify the measured sound power level. In contrast to this, the unsigned pressure intensity indicator and the field non-uniformity indicator fail to describe the quality of the determined sound power level. This theoretical finding is verified by a large measurement program.

Sound power determination by intensity—Are field indicators and criteria in ISO 9614 meaningful?

This study introduces a general analytical model designed to predict the sound reduction frequency of side-branch resonators, regardless of their geometric shapes. Grounded in a continuous analogy mass-spring system, we conceptualize the air within the branch cavity of the resonator as a series of infinitesimal continuous air layers. Each air layer is represented as a mass-spring unit, influenced by the pressure distribution inside the branch cavity. These mass-spring units, following mass conservation principles, are systematically transformed into planar configurations and stacked in a singular direction. These stacked mass-spring units are then converted into an effective one-dimensional mass-spring. Standing wave and the conservation of energy are employed to determine the natural frequency of the effective one-dimensional mass-spring, which corresponds to the sound reduction frequency of the side-branch resonator. This analytical model offers precise predictions for the sound reduction frequencies of side-branch resonators, regardless of their geometric variations. The analytical model can help designers design side-branch resonators in various shapes that accurately target specific sound reduction frequencies in real-world applications. Our analytical model's predictions for sound reduction frequencies were benchmarked against simulations from COMSOL 5.4. The comparative analysis demonstrates the adaptability of the proposed analogy mass-spring system model to side-branch resonators of varied geometric designs. Furthermore, the model exhibits both high predictive accuracy and robustness. Further details and examples will be elaborated upon subsequently.

A general analogy mass-spring system analytical model for sound reduction of side-branch resonators

The new generation of non-hydrostatic and compressible numerical models of the ocean can explicitly simulate acoustic waves when and where space and time resolution is adapted. We show that these models can consequently propagate accurately acoustic waves and modes through a free-surface, stratified ocean evolving simultaneously both in space and time, bringing them to the state of the art of acoustic propagation modelling. To some extent, both numerical cost and memory footprint may temper their range of applications but they are an unprecedented tool to evaluate deterministically the effects of ocean variability on low-frequency acoustic propagation in a realistically-evolving ocean. This potential is illustrated by two examples of three-dimensional propagation: the wedge benchmark and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities.

Modelling acoustic propagation in realistic ocean through a time-domain environment-resolving ocean model

During its propagation, a shock wave may come across and interact with different perturbations, including acoustical waves. While this issue has been the subject of many studies, the particular acoustic-acoustic interaction between a weak shock and a sound wave has been very scarcely investigated. Here, a theory describing the encounter of those two waves is developed, up to second- and third-order. According to the incidence angle and shock strength, several regimes of acoustic transmission through the shock are identified. The generation of entropy as well as vorticity modes are determined, while the perturbation of the shock front by the acoustic wave is quantified. The theory predicts strongly different behaviors between air and water, and preliminary results are coherent with recent experimental observations in solids. It paves the way to both an acoustic monitoring of shock wave as well as a method to determine the quadratic and cubic nonlinear parameters of material.

Zero-directional refraction phenomenon refers to the capability where waves do not undergo refraction at a material interface under specific conditions, which has broad potential applications, particularly in the fields of optics, acoustics, and phononics. Previous research of zero-directional refraction rely on the zero or equivalent-zero index of the material parameters, which is quite challenging to manipulate the zero-directional transport of waves. In this paper, based on the topological theory, we have constructed a pillared phononic crystal (PnC) plate structure with pseudospin topologically protected transport, enabling zero-directional refraction of elastic waves without using zero or equivalent-zero index of the material parameters. By initially adjusting the contraction and expansion of the pillared unit cell, a band inversion effect between pseudospin dipoles and quadrupoles is induced, thus leading to a topological phase transition of elastic wave. Combining the phase matching between topological interface and terminal medias, the elastic waves in pillared PnC plate can exhibit zero-directional refraction behavior. Finally, it was demonstrated that the phenomenon of zero-directional refraction exhibits robustness in the presence of cavities and bends, and different incident angles. This research result provides new insights for designing and manipulating the emission and directional antennas of elastic waves.

Topologically protected zero-directional refraction of elastic waves in a pillared phononic crystal plate

Accurately characterizing bone properties using quantitative ultrasound remains a significant challenge due to the dispersive nature of guided waves, limited observations, irregularity of bone structure, and heterogeneity of bone tissues. In this paper, an inversion technique is proposed that combines weighted mean absolute criteria and the simulated annealing algorithm to extract the thicknesses and elastic properties of a bilayer bone model. By utilizing the L1 norm with an appropriate weighting parameter, this method effectively reduces the influence of outliers and noises commonly encountered in ultrasonic data, leading to more accurate estimation. This paper also introduces an asymptotic scheme to significantly reduce the search domain, improving the speed and precision of the inversion process. This approach employs a spectral collocation method as a forward modeling technique to simulate guided waves in a bone plate coated by a soft tissue layer. This paper validates the inversion using simulated and ex vivo data and demonstrates its ability to estimate features of cortical bone and soft tissue with high accuracy. Results are presented for the isotropic model. These findings hold great promise for the accurate characterization of bone properties using quantitative ultrasound, with potential applications in clinical diagnosis and treatment of bone-related diseases and injuries.
