Applied Ergonomics

The theme Smart Transport can be described as adequate human-system symbiosis to realize effective, efficient and human-friendly transport of goods and information. This paper addresses how to attune automation to human (cognitive) capacities (e.g. to take care of information uncertainty, operator trust and mutual man-machine adaptations). An introduction to smart transport is presented, including examples of best practice for engineering human factors in the vehicle ergonomics and train traffic control domain. The examples are representative of an ongoing trend in automation and they show how the human role changes from controller to supervisor. Section 2 focuses on the car driver and systems that support, or sometimes even take over, critical parts of the driving task. Due to the diversity of driver ability, driving context and dependence between driver and context factors, there is a need for personalised, adaptive and integrated support. Systematic research is needed to establish sound systems. Section 3 focuses on the train dispatcher support systems that predict train movements, detect potential conflicts and show the dispatcher the possibilities available to solve the detected problems. Via thorough analysis of both the process to be controlled and the dispatcher's tasks and cognitive needs, support functions were developed as part of an already very complex supervision and control system. The two examples, although from a different field, both show the need for further development in cognitive modelling as well as for the value of sound ergonomics task analysis in design practice.

Human-factors engineering for smart transport: design support for car drivers and train traffic controllers.

Small mobile devices are ubiquitous and must be designed with great care. One of the most serious challenges is how information on the small displays is presented optimally. This paper addresses the special problem of the increasing number of aged users. On the one hand, information displayed should be easily readable. This requires a low information density and a sufficiently large font size. On the other hand menu orientation is facilitated when the amount of information per screen is maximized and a large preview is allowed. This requires presenting as many functions as possible on the screen at a time. Thus, the tradeoff between readability and orientation demands is crucial. In the present study, this tradeoff was experimentally investigated. Two factors, font size (8pt, 12pt) and the size of the preview (one or five functions per screen at a time) were varied and effects on navigation performance were observed. Forty older participants solved nine common phone navigation tasks twice consecutively on a simulated mobile phone. Both factors contributed to performance, but there was a significant interaction: navigation performance was optimal when font size and the size of the preview were large. The lowest performance was obtained when the preview was small and the font size large, showing that proper orientation is more important than visibility demands. The results can be used in ergonomic guidelines to optimized information presentation on small screens.

This laboratory study aimed to characterize the dynamics of sitting during a 40 min computer task in 20 younger (YG) and 18 older (OG) computer users. The position of the center of pressure (COP) in anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) direction was computed. The range, velocity, area, standard deviation (SD) and sample entropy (SaEn) values were extracted. The range, velocity and area of the COP displacement were larger in the AP while the SD and SaEn were respectively larger and smaller in both AP and ML for the OG than the YG. The findings revealed altered dynamics of sitting among older computer users.

Glare can be caused by a direct view of the bright sky from the interior of a building. This glare can be an impediment to vision and even a direct hazard, as on a stairway, or it can cause serious or mild discomfort. Even minor effects may accumulate, as with a low but incessant noise, to lead to fatigue during the working day. Both the disabling and annoying effects of glare have been studied in a number of laboratories, and this article summarises some of the most recent conclusions. Glare is a direct function of both the size of the window and the brightness of the sky seen through it, and an inverse function of the brightness of the room interior. Glare can therefore be reduced by cutting down the size and brightness of the visible patch of sky and by increasing the interior brightness by the judicious use of surface areas of high reflectance. These parameters are related in such a way that an overall Glare Index for a room can be computed and values of this Glare Index can be set and codified to ensure that tolerance limits will not be exceeded.

A factor that can potentially negatively impact the accuracy of automated decision aid use, and increase perceived workload, is time pressure. Increased automation transparency can increase the accuracy of automation use. We examined the extent to which increased transparency can mitigate the negative effects of time pressure on the accuracy of automation use and perceived workload. Participants completed an uninhabited vehicle (UV) management task where they assigned the best UV to complete missions by either accepting or rejecting automated advice. Participants made a decision after either 25s (low time pressure) or 12s (high time pressure). The accuracy of automation use decreased, and perceived workload increased, when under higher time pressure. Higher transparency benefited the accuracy of automation use and increased perceived trust and usability. However, high transparency did not mitigate the negative impacts of high time pressure, indicating that increased time pressure can influence the processing of highly transparent information.

The metro is susceptible to disruption risks and requires a system response capability to build resilience to manage disruptions. Achieving such resilient response state requires readiness in both the technology side, e.g., utilizing digital technologies (DTs) to monitor system components, and the human factors side, e.g., fostering positive human coping capabilities; however, these two sides are usually considered independently, without sufficient integration. This paper aims to develop and empirically test a model in which monitoring-enabled DTs, employees' reactions, and their positive capabilities are simultaneously considered in terms of their interplay and impact on system response capability. The results showed that while DTs for monitoring physical components enhanced perceived management commitment and fostered collective efficacy, DTs for monitoring human components increased psychological strain and inhibited improvisation capability, creating a "double-edged sword" effect on system response capability. Additionally, explicit management commitment buffered the adverse effect of DTs-induced psychological strain on individual improvisation.

A road map for the operationalization of resilience in healthcare - A mixed method study

Road traffic is largely defined by clear rules and laws. However, there are certain situations that are ambiguous and in which explicit communication between road users is needed to resolve such misjudgements or ambiguities. Especially hand gestures can be used to coordinate traffic by conveying different intentions, which refer to one's own behaviour or the change in the behaviour of others. This paper aims to identify such gestures focusing on the pedestrian-driver communication. The paper follows two approaches: Firstly, an experimental study (N = 20) was conducted analysing gestures in predetermined scenarios in a virtual and real environment. Secondly, traffic observations were conducted to analyse and compare natural occurring gestures with those identified in the study. As a result, 18 relevant pedestrian gestures were identified. The type of gestures and the expressiveness of the execution did not differ between the virtual or real study environment. From this, it can be concluded that the virtual environment is an appropriate study environment for identifying and analysing gestures. Furthermore, the type of gestures did not differ between the experimental study and the traffic observations, but the naturally occurring gestures were executed less expressively compared to those from the study. Finally, the paper presents a suitable approach on how pedestrian gestures can be studied and provides a foundation for further research on the communication between pedestrians and automated vehicles (AVs).
