The Journal of Theoretical Biology serves as a primary forum for exploring theoretical perspectives on biological processes. It covers a wide range of topics that attract the interest of biologists from various research fields, including: brain and neuroscience, cancer growth and treatment, cell biology, developmental biology, ecology, evolution, immunology, infectious and non-infectious diseases, mathematical, computational, biophysical, and statistical modeling, microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry, networks and complex systems, physiology, pharmacology, animal behavior, and game theory. Acceptable papers are those that hold significant importance for biology itself, rather than merely focusing on mathematical analysis. Papers that include some data or experimental materials related to theory will also be considered, including those that contain comparative studies, statistical data analysis, mathematical proofs, computer simulations, experiments, field observations, or even philosophical arguments that support or refute theoretical ideas. However, efforts should be made to ensure that the papers are more easily understood by biologists in the selected field.

Journal Citation Format

Those examples are references to articles in scholarly journals and how they are supposed to appear in your bibliography.

Not all journals organize their published articles in volumes and issues, so these fields are optional. Some electronic journals do not provide a page range, but instead list an article identifier. In a case like this it's safe to use the article identifier instead of the page range.

A journal article with 1 author

A journal article with 2 authors

A journal article with 3 authors

A journal article with 5 or more authors

Here are examples of references for authored and edited books.

Sometimes references to web sites should appear directly in the text rather than in the bibliography.
