X-Ray Spectrometry

Self‐organising map (SOM), an unsupervised machine learning algorithm based on neural networks, is applied to introduce a novel approach for the analysis of XRF spectral imaging data. This method automatically reduced hundreds of thousands of XRF spectra in a spectral image dataset to a handful of distinct clusters that share similar spectra. In this study, we show how clustering and the combination of spatial and spectral information can be used to aid materials identification and deduce the paint sequence. The efficiency and accuracy of the method is presented through the analysis of a Peruvian watercolour painting from the Getty Research Institute collection. Confirmation of the interpretation was provided by complementary non‐invasive techniques, such as optical microscopy, reflectance and Raman spectroscopies.

A new approach to the interpretation of <scp>XRF</scp> spectral imaging data using neural networks

Abstract This paper proposes a rapid X‐ray fluorescence (XRF)‐based screening method for the determination of trace uranium in solutions. In this method, uranium present in a solution was adsorbed onto graphene oxide (GO), which was collected and subjected to XRF analysis. Upon increasing the sodium ion concentration, the aggregation of GO was promoted, facilitating its collection. Since the GO‐collecting membrane filter was significantly larger than the X‐ray irradiation field of the XRF spectrometer, it was folded to 1/3 of its original length and width. The folded membrane filter was sealed to prevent uranium from contaminating the device and to ensure that the folded membrane filter was sufficiently thin. Subsequently, the amount of sodium perchlorate added to the sample solution was optimized to attain a salinity meter reading of 3%. The minimum detection limit (MDL) for uranium using this method was 0.37 ng ml −1 , and the time required to simultaneously analyze six samples was approximately 2 h. Converting the MDL to the radioactivity concentration under conservative conditions generated a value of 0.037 mBq cm −3 . To demonstrate the applicability of this method, a standard seawater sample was subjected to analysis, and the uranium concentration determined using our calibration curve agreed with the actual value within a margin of error. Therefore, the proposed method is suitable for screening numerous uranium‐contaminated water samples of small volumes.

ABSTRACT Commercially available hand‐held X‐ray fluorescence (HH‐XRF) spectrometers have their own quantitative analysis software. When the elements Se and Cd in soil samples are measured and quantified, the calculated concentrations sometimes fail by a factor of 1/2 for Cd, although the values obtained for Se are accurate. This is because of the escape depth length of fluorescent X‐rays. Easy ways to overcome this problem are presented; two point calibration, or at least one point and one blank is enough. Problems associated with mercury evaporation from the sample is also discussed. Filter paper analysis is used as an example for the present work, and a five‐filter pile of ash‐less paper is concluded to have better sensitivity than a single paper filter analysis.

Sample Thickness Effect on Quantitative Analysis by Hand‐Held X‐Ray Fluorescence Spectrometers

ABSTRACT This study proposes a novel approach for gold analysis in soil and rock samples using wavelength dispersive X‐ray fluorescence. The method offers advantages over traditional techniques like fire assay and MIBK extraction by being less labor‐intensive, environmentally friendly, and achieving lower limits of detection of 20–70 μg/kg depending on matrix of sample. The method involves pre‐concentration steps including aqua regia digestion, evaporation of filtrate and pressed pellet preparation, followed by WD‐XRF analysis to quantify gold content. The instrumental parameters for optimal signal‐to‐background ratio were determined. To ensure precise measurements, the calibration curve was created using specially made pressed pellets of gold‐spiked hematite ore samples. These samples contained known amounts of gold and matched the matrix of the pellets being analyzed. The proposed method demonstrates good accuracy and precision, making it a viable alternative for gold exploration and mining activities.

<scp>WD</scp>‐<scp>XRF</scp> Determination of Gold in Geological Samples: An Eco‐Friendly Pre‐Concentration Method

ABSTRACT In x‐ray fluorescence analysis (XRFA), the use of secondary targets to suppress measurement background is a common practice aimed at reducing detection limits. However, conventional polarized secondary targets often exhibit low conversion efficiency of primary x‐rays. In this paper, we propose a novel hemispherical secondary target designed to exploit a focusing‐like phenomenon for primary x‐rays, thereby enhancing the conversion efficiency and achieving improved background suppression. The optimal dimensions of the hemispherical secondary target are determined through theoretical calculations, and further validated through Monte Carlo simulations and experimental analysis. Our findings reveal a substantial enhancement in the peak‐to‐background ratio when compared to traditional polarized secondary targets. Specifically, for a 1000‐ppm Ce sample, the peak‐to‐background ratio increased from 8.45 to 9.78 with the implementation of the hemispherical secondary target. Similar improvements were observed when measuring a 1000‐ppm Ce sample, relative to direct excitation. Furthermore, the relative error between the system and the ICP‐MS measurement results of the rare earth sample remains within 5%, underscoring the effectiveness of the hemispherical secondary target in XRFA applications.
