Although the existing methods*for piercing ears are generally satisfactory, they have certain disadvantages which can, at times, complicate an otherwise simple procedure. The suture method, for example, which consists of placing sutures in the ear lobules, has the following drawbacks: The suture tract frequently becomes secondarily infected and painful. The sinus tract created is not always easily penerated by the earrings, and a false passage may occur. The suture material must be worn for 7 to 10 days. Seiger2and Kanee3recommend piercing the ear lobule from front to back with a 17- to 13-gauge hypodermic needle, the gauge to be determined by placing the barbed end of the earring in the lumina of various needles until a snug fit is obtained. I have a couple of other rarities to present to the Royal Society, one of which is matchless, and to me wholly new. A girl in Plymouth, 16 years of age, had about the end of April a few hot pimples arise on her cheeks, which bleeding and a purge or two cured. THE USE of wide spectrum antibiotics by mouth, namely, chlortetracycline (Aureomycin), chloramphenicol, and oxytetracycline (Terramycin), has produced reactions in the mucous membranes and adjacent skin, often more disturbing than the disease for which these drugs may be prescribed. One of us (S. O.) noted that among patients being treated for syphilis with large oral doses of chlortetracycline, chloramphenicol, and oxytetracycline there occurred a significant number of mucous membrane reactions ranging from simple glossitis to involvement of the whole lining of the mouth and anogenital regions. The syphilis patients being treated at Gallinger Municipal Hospital (now District of Columbia General Hospital) Rapid Treatment Center, Washington, D. C., were drawn from a low-income, presumably malnourished group. For the past year and a half, the department has been interested in the use of some of the new chelating compounds in the field of clinical dermatology. The most extensive experience with these has been with the local use on the scalp. Another phase of the study, under the direction of Dr. Cleveland Denton, has been with the use of these compounds in nickel and chromium hypersensitivity, and the third phase of the study is the use of disodium calcium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) complex in routine wet-dressing techniques. Selenium sulfide in the form of a suspension has been previously reported effective in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the use of 1% selenium sulfide incorporated in a water-miscible ointment base in seborrheic dermatitis of the skin other than the scalp and also in certain other dermatoses. Involvement of the scalp with seborrheic dermatitis was usually treated concomitantly with 2.5% selenium sulfide (Selsun) suspension. METHOD OF STUDY The 1% selenium sulfide ointment was dispensed for application to the areas other than the scalp usually involved with seborrheic dermatitis, usually twice daily, sometimes less frequently. RESULTS OF TREATMENT A total of 37 cases of seborrheic dermatitis were included in the study, of which 27, or 73%, had a generally satisfactory response. Streptomycin has not been reported previously for the treatment of Oriental leishmaniasis, although several other antibiotic drugs have been employed.*This report deals only with the treatment of Oriental leishmaniasis and does not include the American type, although treatment in allied protozoal infections is recommended. Dihydrostreptomycin was used in the treatment of 133 cases of Mediterranean Oriental leishmaniasis of all varieties. The drug may be injected locally into the lesions or given parenterally or by both methods, and is equally effective by either technique. Local injections into single lesions is inexpensive and usually not more than three injections are needed in such cases. According to the size of the lesion, 0.25 to 0.5 gm. in 1 to 4 cc. of distilled water or saline may be injected locally. FIFTY-THREE picnickers, affected in this outbreak, were members of a small community, and available for early examination, and follow-up. The natural history of the condition, which was first described by Cort 1 from Michigan, is briefly as follows: Cercariae pass from snail to fish; the fish is eaten by a bird and the organism reenters the lakewater from the birds' droppings. THERE IS no reported instance of treatment of systemic fungous disease in man with testosterone compounds. In 1953 Lamb and his associates1reported the cure of a mycetoma caused by an atypical Nocardia under treatment with large doses of pregnenolone acetate. Ophiasis is a form of alopecia areata. It is relatively rare, but deserves special mention because of its different morphology, localization, and prognosis. Alopecia areata is one of the earliest known dermatologic entities, having been described in the Papyrus Ebers, which dates back to 1500-2500 B.C.1The special ophiasitic form was recognized by Celsus,2and is so named because of the symmetric bands of alopecia above the ears on the lateral aspects of the scalp, resembling a serpent. THE CASES herein reported are those of an infant born with an eruption on the scalp and face, which clinically and histologically was consistent with chronic discoid lupus erythematosus, and of his mother, who developed acute disseminate lupus erythematosus 11 months later. REPORT OF CASES CASE1.—J. V., a 6-week-old white boy, was first seen on Nov. 3, 1951. The referring physician stated that an eruption was present at delivery but had become more livid, and the number of lesions had increased in the six weeks since birth. Gestation period had been full term and normal. Birth weight was 4 lb. 13 oz. (2,183 gm.), length, 18 in. (46 cm.). Physical examination was negative except for the skin of the scalp and face, which showed discrete, erythematous macules varying from 0.5 to 3.0 cm. in diameter.
