Bronchial biopsies were investigated by light microscopy (LM) and electron microscopy (EM) with the aim to evaluate if EM could contribute to the LM tumour type diagnosis. Fourty‐three pairs of biopsies were comparable. A histogenetic typing, especially of light microscopically undifferentiated and unclassifiable carcinomas, was possible by EM. However, when considering the therapeutical possibilities, at present time, LM tumour classification must be regarded as fully sufficient.

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF BIOPSIES FROM BRONCHOGENIC NEOPLASMS

In vivo staining of motor endplates was carried out in the anterior tibial muscle of the rat, using the acetylthiocholine-iodide staining method of Koelle and Friedenwald. A strong and distinct endplate staining was obtained after incubation in the staining solution for only one minute if the epimysium had been removed from the muscle. Staining with intact epimysium gave a less satisfactory result if the incubation time was 3 minutes, but it was excellent after incubation for 10 minutes. At re-examination 5 or 30 days later, the initial staining had disappeared in all animals, and a second staining at this time gave just as good results as on the first occasion. The inflammatory reaction in the muscle was more severe with removed epimysium than with intact epimysium, and the staining solution had a slight local toxic effect compared with 0.9% NaCl. Staining with intact epimysium should therefore be preferred if possible.

Cystic transformation of the periferal prostate affecting at least 10 cm3 of tissue was found in 19 out of 300 consecutive prostatic glands at autopsy. The etiology is probably multifactorial and no correlation is found with nodular hyperplasia or carcinoma. Periferal cystic hyperplasia may be a cause of palpatoric enlargement of the prostate and thus may be a differential diagnostic possibility to nodular hyperplasia or cancer.

Recent developments in preparatory procedures for electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry are presented as a background for the morphological diagnosis of bone dysplasia. With the new low temperature embedding techniques and the availability of monoclonal antibodies raised against the main matrix macromolecules, biopsies have proved to be an important complement to clinical and radiological workup and they may sometimes provide the final clue to the diagnosis.

Acute pancreatitis was induced in anesthetized pigs by injection of Na‐taurocholate into the pancreatic duct. The pigs were allocated to 4 groups. One group remained untreated while the other groups received either C 1 ‐inhibitor, aprotinin or methyl‐prednisolone intravenously as pretreatment. Extensive necroses of the pancreatic parenchyma, peripancreatic oedema and accumulation of large amounts of fluid in the abdominal cavity developed within a few hours in all experimental groups. Pretreatment significantly improved hemodynamics and increased the survival rate at 6 hours. It is concluded that the most essential effect of the pretreatments were reduction of proteolytic activities which are secondary to the pancreatic lesions.
