Abstract Abstract In this article, the use of liquid crystals for three types of tunable phase shifters in planar technology is proposed. Those structures are a microstrip line phase shifter, an access coplanar wave guide phase shifter, and a symmetric stub phase shifter with a liquid crystal cavity. To benefit from liquid crystal anisotropy and thus obtain agility, a bias voltage is applied. A broad-beam reflective metasurface enhancing signal coverage for indoor wireless communication

A novel bifunctional metasurface (MS) operating at two frequencies is proposed to manipulate reflected and transmitted waves independently. The element is composed of a slot sandwiched by two C-shape spilt rings (CSRRs). The middle layer is the metal sheet etched the slots, and it is used to select polarization mode of reflection and transmission. Also, it isolates the reflection and transmission elements and eliminates the coupling between them. Therefore, the reflection or transmission amplitude and phase of the proposed MS can be regulated by the corresponding single metal layer compared with the current bifunctional elements. This is helpful to shorten design time. Also, a higher transmission amplitude is achieved with fewer substrate layers and lower profile. The reflection and transmission mode operate at 17.6 GHz and 12.6 GHz, respectively. As a proof of concept, a full-space multibeam generator is validated both numerically and experimentally and a full-space bifocal metalens is demonstrated numerically. The proposed MS provides a new kind of low cost, lightweight, and easily modularized planar devices for microwave applications.

A novel bifunctional metasurface based on independent control of transmission and reflection amplitudes and phases

This brief presents a novel design of a compact wideband tunable phase shifter with low in-band phase deviation. Different from the implementation structures of conventional tunable phase shifters, the proposed design is composed of two microstrip lines, two varactor-loaded coupled lines, and an open-circuit stub, which can perform the characteristics of low phase error, large phase shift range, wide operating bandwidth, and compact size simultaneously. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that a relatively large phase shift range and small phase error can be realized by choosing appropriate electrical parameters of the coupled lines and microstrip lines. The measurement results indicate that the fabricated tunable phase shifter operating at 1.9 GHz can provide a maximum continuously tunable phase shift up to 225.5° within the 21.1% fractional bandwidth, with a maximum in-band phase error of ± 3.22°. Meanwhile, the insertion loss is less than 3.95 dB over the operating band.

A compact-size wideband circularly polarized dipole array loaded metasurface (MS) is proposed for RFID readers at 2.45 GHz. The proposed array consists of 2 × 2 dipole antennas, two dielectric substrates, a metal ground plane, and a feeding network. The dipoles were printed on the upper substrate (#1), which was suspended over the lower substrate (#2). An MS lattice of 5 × 5 metal plates placed at the bottom of substrate #1 is utilized to improve the impedance bandwidth. For gain enhancement in the high-frequency band, one MS unit cell in the center of the MS lattice is removed. The proposed dipole array is then properly incorporated with a sequential-phase feeding network for circular polarization operations. The final design, with an overall size of 90 mm × 90 mm × 12.032 mm (~0.86λ0 × 0.86λ0 × 0.11λ0 at 2.9 GHz), was fabricated and measured. The prototype array has a measured |S11| < −10 dB bandwidth of 2.07–3.79 GHz (58.7%), a 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 1.80–3.13 GHz (53.95%), a 3-dB gain bandwidth of 2.11–3.47 GHz (48.7%), and a peak gain of 9.52 dBic at 2.7 GHz.

Compact-size wideband circularly-polarized dipole array loaded metasurface for RFID readers

In this paper, a bifunctional full-space metasurface (FS-MS) with dual-band is proposed. Two metal layers are located on each side of the unit dielectric substrate, independently regulating the phase in the transmission and reflection. The metasurface can reflect x-polarized waves at 28 GHz and transmit y-polarized waves at 35 GHz. Based on the anisotropy and Huygens theories, the reflected and transmitted beams can be tuned flexibly. The metasurface design is carried out as an illustration of the reflected Bessel beams and the transmitted focusing or OAM beam. The results show that the metasurfaces can realize double zero-order Bessel beams, bifocals with a focusing efficiency of 22.27%, and an OAM beam with a mode purity of 74.12%. The proposed FS-MS, devoid of multilayer stacking and metal perforations, exhibits a simple structure, low profile, and ease of processing, all of which make them a promising candidate for applications in intelligent housing systems.

Compact dual-band independently modulated bifunctional full-space metasurface

This study introduced the smallest radial line slot array (RLSA) antenna to date and examined the impact of cutting on the antenna's performance to assess the feasibility of this cutting method. The RLSA model and its cut version were designed, simulated, and fabricated to validate the simulations and the method itself. Their performance was then evaluated in terms of gain, reflection coefficient, and bandwidth. The analysis revealed that the method could reduce the antenna size by up to five times while maintaining its gain, which only decreased by approximately 50%. Additionally, this method resulted in a wider bandwidth of around 1 GHz and significantly reduced reflection.

This letter proposes a novel dual-frequency reflective coding metasurface (CMS) composed of two types of improved C-shaped resonators. By loading a microstrip line and a ring, the electromagnetic (EM) coupling between the resonators is significantly reduced. Also, the microstrip line helps to improve reflection amplitude in the high band. As a result, the proposed CMS can independently control the amplitude and phase of cross-polarized waves in the frequency ranges of 8.6–9.4 GHz and 16.3–17.1 GHz. Based on this CMS, a bifocal metalens and a reflectarray (RA) antenna operating in the bands are designed, and the latter is fabricated and tested. The measured peak gains of the RA antenna are 21.6 dBi in 9.0 GHz band and 22.7 dBi in 16.8 GHz band. The aperture efficiencies are 30.7% and 22.8%, respectively.
