Abstract The proliferation of rechargeable lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) over the past decade has led to a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) powered by these batteries reaching the end of their lifespan. With retired EVs becoming more prevalent, recycling and reusing their components, particularly graphite, has become imperative as the world transitions toward electric mobility. Graphite constitutes ≈20% of LIBs by weight, making it a valuable resource to be conserved. This review presents an in‐depth analysis of the current global graphite mining landscape and explores potential opportunities for the “second life” of graphitefrom depleted LIBs. Various recycling and reactivation technologies in both industry and academia are discussed, along with potential applications for recycled graphite forming a vital aspect of the waste management hierarchy. Furthermore, this review addresses the future challenges faced by the recycling industry in dealing with expired LIBs, encompassing environmental, economic, legal, and regulatory considerations. In conclusion, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the developments in recycling and reusing graphite from retired LIBs, offering valuable insights for forthcoming large‐scale recycling efforts.

Recycling and Reusing of Graphite from Retired Lithium‐ion Batteries: A Review

Abstract Solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) play a vital role in the development of high‐energy all‐solid‐state batteries. However, most adopted mechanical ball milling and/or high‐temperature annealing are ineffective approaches for large‐scale synthesis. Herein, a universal and scalable hydrate‐assisted strategy for the synthesis of oxychloride SSEs is developed based on the chemical reaction among alkali chlorides, AlCl 3 , and AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O. The synthesized aluminum‐based oxychloride SSEs possess a high Li + conductivity over 1 mS cm −1 at 30 °C. The final aluminum‐based oxychloride SSEs are structurally heterogeneous with nm‐sized LiCl‐like and LiAlCl 4 crystallites and large amounts of amorphous [Al a O b Cl c ] (2 b + c −3 a )− components. Faster local mobility of Li + ions in amorphous structures is verified and is attributable to weakened Li + ‐X − interactions ensured by the [Al a O b Cl c ] (2 b + c −3 a )− polyanions. The potential applications for this synthesis technique are further demonstrated by kilogram‐scale reactions and synthesis of other oxychloride SSEs including zirconium‐based and tantalum‐based analogs. These findings not only provide a new simple, scalable, and energy‐efficient synthesis route for oxychloride SSEs but also further promote their application in all‐solid‐state batteries.

Oxychloride Polyanion Clustered Solid‐State Electrolytes via Hydrate‐Assisted Synthesis for All‐Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract Microgels show advantages over bulk hydrogels due to convenient control over microgel size and composition, and the ability to use microgels to modularly construct larger hierarchical scaffold hydrogel materials. Here, supramolecular chemistry is used to formulate supramolecular polymer, dynamic microgels solely held together by non‐covalent interactions. Four‐fold hydrogen bonding ureido‐pyrimidinone (UPy) monomers with different functionalities are applied to precisely tune microgel properties in a modular way, via variations in monomer concentration, bifunctional crosslinker ratio, and the incorporation of supramolecular dyes and peptides. Functionalization with a bioactive supramolecular cell‐adhesive peptide induced selectivity of cells toward the bioactive microgels over non‐active, non‐functionalized versions. Importantly, the supramolecular microgels can also be applied as microscale building blocks into supramolecular bulk macrogels with tunable dynamic behavior: a robust and weak macrogel, where the micro‐ and macrogels are composed of similar molecular building blocks. In a robust macrogel, microgels act as modular micro‐building blocks, introducing multi‐compartmentalization, while in a weak macrogel, microgels reinforce and enhance mechanical properties. This work demonstrates the potential to modularly engineer higher‐length‐scale structures using small molecule supramolecular monomers, wherein microgels serve as versatile and modular micro‐building units.

Using a Supramolecular Monomer Formulation Approach to Engineer Modular, Dynamic Microgels, and Composite Macrogels

Over the last 30 years, the study of ferroelectric oxides has been revolutionized by the implementation of epitaxial‐thin‐film‐based studies, which have driven many advances in the understanding of ferroelectric physics and the realization of novel polar structures and functionalities. New questions have motivated the development of advanced synthesis, characterization, and simulations of epitaxial thin films and, in turn, have provided new insights and applications across the micro‐, meso‐, and macroscopic length scales. This review traces the evolution of ferroelectric thin‐film research through the early days developing understanding of the roles of size and strain on ferroelectrics to the present day, where such understanding is used to create complex hierarchical domain structures, novel polar topologies, and controlled chemical and defect profiles. The extension of epitaxial techniques, coupled with advances in high‐throughput simulations, now stands to accelerate the discovery and study of new ferroelectric materials. Coming hand‐in‐hand with these new materials is new understanding and control of ferroelectric functionalities. Today, researchers are actively working to apply these lessons in a number of applications, including novel memory and logic architectures, as well as a host of energy conversion devices.

Thin‐Film Ferroelectrics

Traditional imaging systems struggle in weak or complex lighting environments due to their fixed spectral responses, resulting in spectral mismatches and degraded image quality. To address these challenges, a bioinspired adaptive broadband image sensor is developed. This innovative sensor leverages a meticulously designed type-I heterojunction alignment of 0D perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and 2D black phosphorus (BP). This configuration enables efficient carrier injection control and advanced computing capabilities within an integrated phototransistor array. The sensor's unique responses to both visible and infrared (IR) light facilitate selective enhancement and precise feature extraction under varying lighting conditions. Furthermore, it supports real-time convolution and image restoration within a convolutional autoencoder (CAE) network, effectively countering image degradation by capturing spectral features. Remarkably, the hardware responsivity weights perform comparably to software-trained weights, achieving an image restoration accuracy of over 85%. This approach offers a robust and versatile solution for machine vision applications that demand precise and adaptive imaging in dynamic lighting environments.

Adaptive In‐Sensor Computing for Enhanced Feature Perception and Broadband Image Restoration

Stubborn biofilm infections pose serious threats to public health. Clinical practices highly rely on mechanical debridement and antibiotics, which often fail and lead to persistent and recurrent infections. The main culprits are 1) persistent bacteria reviving, colonizing, and rejuvenating biofilms, and 2) secondary pathogen exposure, particularly in individuals with chronic diseases. Addressing how to inhibit persistent bacteria revival and prevent reinfection simultaneously is still a major challenge. Herein, an oligo‐ethylene glycol‐modified lipophilic cationic photosensitizer (PS), TBTCP‐PEG7, is developed. It effectively eradicates Methicillin‐ResistantStaphylococcus aureus(MRSA) under light irradiation. Furthermore, TBTCP‐PEG7‐mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) not only conquers stubborn biofilm infections by downregulating the two‐component system (TCS), quorum sensing (QS), and virulence factors, thereby reducing intercellular communication, inhibiting persistent bacterial regrowth and biofilm remodeling but also prevents reinfection by upregulating heat shock protein‐related genes to induce immunogenetic cell death (ICD) and establish immune memory. In vivo, TBTCP‐PEG7 efficiently eradicates MRSA biofilm adhered to medical catheters, stimulates angiogenesis, reduces inflammatory factor expression, and accelerates wound healing. Furthermore, ICD promotes short‐term immune and long‐term immunological memory for coping with secondary infections. This two‐pronged strategy not only effectively overcomes stubborn, persistent and recurrent biofilm infection, but also provides theoretical guidance for designing the next generation of antibacterial materials.

Photoimmunologic Therapy of Stubborn Biofilm via Inhibiting Bacteria Revival and Preventing Reinfection

Abstract Magnetic liquid metal droplets, featured by unique fluidity, metallic conductivity, and magnetic reactivity, are of growing significance for next‐generation flexible electronics. Conventional fabrication routes, which typically incorporate magnetic nanoparticles into liquid metals, otherwise encounter the pitfall pertaining to surface adhesivity and corrosivity over device modules. Here, an innovative approach of synergizing liquid metals with 2D magnetic materials is presented, accordingly creating chromium(III)‐telluride‐coated liquid metal (CT–LM) droplets via a simple self‐assembly process. The CT–LM droplets exhibit controllable deformation and locomotion under magnetic fields, demonstrate nonadherence to various surfaces, and enable cost‐effective recycling of components. The functionality of CT–LM droplets is validated through their use in magnetointeractive memory devices to enable sensing/storing 64 magnetic paths and in wearable sensors as the flexible vibrator for dynamic gesture recognition with machine learning assistance. This work opens new avenues for the functional droplet design and broadens the horizons of flexible electronics.

Magnetointeractive Cr2Te3‐Coated Liquid Metal Droplets for Flexible Memory Arrays and Wearable Sensors

Abstract Cisplatin is widely used in clinical cancer treatment; however, its application is often hindered by severe side effects, particularly inherent or acquired resistance of target cells. To address these challenges, an effective strategy is to modify the metal core of the complex and introduce alternative coordination modes or valence states, leading to the development of a series of metal complexes, such as platinum (IV) prodrugs and cyclometalated complexes. Recent advances in nanotechnology have facilitated the development of multifunctional nanomaterials that can selectively deliver drugs to tumor cells, thereby overcoming the pharmacological limitations of metal‐based drugs. This review first explores the self‐assembly of metal complexes into spherical, linear, and irregular nanoparticles in the context of biomedical applications. The mechanisms underlying the self‐assembly of metal complexes into nanoparticles are subsequently analyzed, followed by a discussion of their applications in biomedical fields, including detection, imaging, and antitumor research.

Self‐Assembled Metal Complexes in Biomedical Research

Abstract Chemiluminescence (CL) imaging has emerged as a powerful approach to molecular imaging that allows exceptional sensitivity with virtually no background interference because of its unique capacity to emit photons without an external excitation source. Despite its high potential, the application of this nascent technique faces challenges because the current chemiluminescent agents have limited reactive sites, require complex synthesis, are insufficiently bright, and lack near‐infrared emission. Herein, a series of HClO‐activated chemiluminescent probes that exhibit robust near‐infrared emission are studied. Specifically engineered to respond to HClO, a known biomarker of acute inflammation, these probes achieve high‐contrast in vivo imaging by eliminating the need for constant external excitation. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the CL of the probes depends on the reactivity of the vinylene bonds, following a concerted decomposition of the oxidized chemiluminescent molecule. The application of these chemiluminescent nanoparticles in vivo facilitates high‐contrast imaging of acute inflammation, providing real‐time, high‐contrast visualization of inflammatory conditions. This advancement signifies a leap forward for chemiluminescent nanoplatforms in biomedical imaging and expands the available methodologies in this field.

HClO‐Activated Near‐Infrared Chemiluminescent Probes with a Malononitrile Group for In‐Vivo Imaging

Abstract Hydrogels with mechanical performances similar to load‐bearing tissues are in demand for in vivo applications. In this work, inspired by the self‐assembly behavior of amphiphilic polymers, polyurethane‐based tough hydrogels with a multiple hydrogen‐bond interlocked bicontinuous phase structure through in situ water‐induced microphase separation strategy are developed, in which poly(ethylene glycol)‐based polyurethane (PEG‐PU, hydrophilic) and poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐based polyurethane (PCL‐PU, hydrophobic) are blended to form dry films followed by water swelling. A multiple hydrogen bonding factor, imidazolidinyl urea, is introduced into the synthesis of the two polyurethanes, and the formation of multiple hydrogen bonds between PEG‐PU and PCL‐PU can promote homogeneous microphase separation for the construction of bicontinuous phase structures in the hydrogel network, by which the hydrogel features break strength of 12.9 MPa, fracture energy of 2435 J m −2 , and toughness of 48.2 MJ m −3 . As a biomedical patch, the outstanding mechanical performances can withstand abdominal pressure to prevent hernia formation in the abdominal wall defect model. Compared to the commercial PP mesh, hydrogel can prevent tissue/organ adhesion to reduce inflammatory responses and promote angiogenesis, thereby accelerating the repair of abdominal wall defects. This work may provide useful inspiration for researchers to design different gel materials through solvent‐induced microphase separation.
