Abstract 1 Since the late 1970s, the western flower thrips has spread from its original distribution in western North America to become a major worldwide crop pest. 2 A wide range of data sources have been used to map the original distribution in the U.S.A. and Canada, and the progress of the spread in the U.S.A., Canada, Europe, northern Africa and Australia. 3 The possible reasons for the start of the spread are discussed. The most likely reason is that intensive insecticide use in horticulture in the 1970s and 1980s selected an insecticide resistant strain or strains. These then established in glasshouses across North America and spread from there to Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. 4 The international spread of the western flower thrips occurred predominantly by the movement of horticultural material, such as cuttings, seedlings and potted plants. Within Europe, an outward spread from the original outbreak in the Netherlands is discernible. The speed of spread was 229 ± 20 km/year. 5 The spread has not been restricted to glasshouses. The western flower thrips has established outdoors in areas with milder winters; for example, across the southern U.S.A., southern Europe and Australia. It also overwinters in some regions with colder winters. 6 Polyphagous phytophagous thrips have many factors predisposing them to become worldwide crop pests, particularly in glasshouses. Some other species that might spread in a similar way to the western flower thrips are listed.

Abstract The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is among the key invasive pests attacking maize and sorghum, the staple cereals in many countries in Africa. The determination of habitat suitability of invasive species via correlative model is among the priority tasks that provide basic information for achieving sustainable plant protection. In this study, we developed a species distribution model of S. frugiperda and identified the key influencing environmental factors under current and future climatic conditions in Ethiopia via the MaxEnt program. The results showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of the simulated model was 0.856 (±0.010), confirming the good predictive ability of the model. The isothermality and precipitation of the driest month are the most dominant bioclimatic variables with a percentage contribution of 39.4% and 11.6%, respectively, in the model. The percentages of very highly suitable, highly suitable, moderately suitable, low‐suitable, and unsuitable areas were 21.24%, 21.17%, 28.22%, 16.34% and 13.03%, respectively, of the total Ethiopian land mass. From the present to the 2070s, the areas of highly suitable and very highly suitable habitats for S. frugiperda will increase due to global warming. This study noted that the pest was a major threat to maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. Hence, due emphasis should be given to strengthening monitoring and management in a suitable range, which would lessen economic losses due to invasion and ensure agricultural safety.

Factors influencing the current and future distribution of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), in Ethiopia

Abstract Saproxylic organisms play a pivotal role in the decomposition of woody materials, profoundly impacting nutrient cycling within forest ecosystems. With their rich biodiversity and diverse ecological functions, saproxylic species provide unique ecological services and interactions that are closely linked to specific dead wood types. Given the distinctive roles and diversity of saproxylic beetles, forest loss and management practices that reduce dead wood amount and quality pose a risk of greater biodiversity loss. This highlights the critical need for comprehensive research into saproxylic beetle diversity and community structures from various perspectives to support sustainable forest management strategies. We sampled 60 Quercus logs in a temperate mixed forest during both winter and summer, and reared saproxylic beetles using emergence traps. Consequently, we collected a total of 1793 saproxylic beetles from 27 families and 75 species across three decay classes. Season was a key environmental variable, clearly distinguishing saproxylic beetle assemblages between winter and summer. While decay class did not clearly differentiate the beetle assemblages in summer, it distinctly separated the assemblages in winter. Our findings indicate that saproxylic beetles are influenced by changing resource availability and microclimate, driven by environmental variables such as season. This variability reveals the overlooked biodiversity potential, emphasizing the need for continuous and comprehensive research to achieve conservation goals and improve understanding of saproxylic organisms.

Abstract Advancing biomonitoring of insects is vital if we are to safeguard insect biodiversity whilst optimizing the ecosystem service provision necessary for production systems such as agriculture and forestry. Over recent years, many key technological, methodological and conceptual advances have been made in and adjacent to biomonitoring. These advances are set to form the biomonitoring toolbox of the 21st century. The Agricultural and Forest Entomology special issue “Advances in insect biomonitoring for agriculture and forestry” exemplifies several of these advances across ten articles. From artificial intelligence‐based image analysis and identification, through molecular methods for highly resolved monitoring, to innovative use of existing methods, the articles highlight the diverse future of biomonitoring and the multi‐modal nature of its data. Through the advances represented in this special issue, progress towards highly resolved and scalable biomonitoring is certain, with fully automated biomonitoring seeming increasingly possible. These examples do, however, largely still depend on traditional monitoring and identification of insects for validation or reference data collection. To advance biomonitoring effectively, traditional approaches therefore must remain a key component of monitoring schemes and should be integrated with emerging technologies for robust and accurate biomonitoring.

Advances in insect biomonitoring for agriculture and forestry: A synthesis on a multifaceted special issue of Agricultural and Forest Entomology

Abstract Oak processionary moth ( Thaumetopoea processionea ) (OPM) Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) is a serious forestry pest and risk to public health in the UK. The economic and environmental cost of chemical pesticides in managing OPM has driven the need for sustainable, strategies which fit into integrated pest management frameworks, including the use of novel biocontrol methods such as conservation biocontrol. Carcelia iliaca Ratzeburg, 1840 (Diptera: Tachinidae), a specific parasitoid of OPM, is currently the main biocontrol agent of the UK OPM population. However, basic information on C. iliaca life history and rates of parasitism are currently lacking, partly driven by the risks OPM pose to human health, making both study and incorporation of biocontrol into management plans difficult. Here, we design and validate a molecular diagnostic assay based on loop‐mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) to detect C. iliaca from OPM larval tissue samples collected in the field, overcoming the challenges of studying problematic invasive species such as these. To assess assay performance, diagnostic sensitivity, which was 91%, and specificity, which was 75%, are used alongside limit of detection (600 pg). We discuss the wider applications for LAMP as a cost‐effective tool for studying the natural enemies of insect pests which can be used to inform conservation biocontrol management strategies.

Abstract The weevils of the Ceutorhynchus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) are significant pests, posing a threat to oilseed rape cultivation in Central Europe. Due to their lifestyle, these weevils cause hidden damage within the stems. Our non‐invasive computer tomography‐based study aimed to compare the damage characteristics of three species within this genus: C. pallidactylus (Marsham), C. napi (Gyll.), and C. picitarsis (Gyll.), in oilseed rape stems. During the CT analysis of the plant samples from axial, coronal, and sagittal approaches at different points, we measured the length of the damaging larvae, their number per plant, their distance from each other, the volume of the formed cavity, and the diameter of the damaged plant stems. Additionally, we investigated the closeness of the connections between these forms of damage. Our study found that damage to plant samples during the period of interest was species‐specific. Significant differences were observed in the longitudinal size dimensions of the larvae, the volume of the formed cavities, and the diameters of the stems of the attacked plants among the species causing the damage. The Pearson correlation results confirmed a strong correlation between the volumes of the formed cavities and the values of larval length (l) and stem diameter (⌀), as well as between stem diameter and larval length data for each species (C. pallidactylus : l = 6.903 ± 1.332 mm, ⌀ = 11.43 ± 0.707 mm; C. napi : l = 9.868 ± 0.617 mm, ⌀ = 23.11 ± 2.813 mm; C. picitarsis : l = 3.772 ± 0.967 mm, ⌀ = 11.16 ± 0.365 mm). These results suggest that the damages caused by these hidden lifestyle stem pests of oilseed rape are species‐specific.
