Applied Environmental Education and Communication

Green buildings are increasingly part of the fabric of life on college campuses and promising avenues for environmental education, but effective public engagement remains an open question. This work adapts a framework from environmental education to suggest evidence-based guidelines for green building communications. The framework is then used as a tool for the content analysis of photographic data of signage in three case study green campus buildings. Results of this analysis suggest building signage overly relies on static displays that likely fail to engage building occupants. Implications for designers of green buildings and environmental communications are discussed.

Building awareness: An evidence-based evaluation of green building signage

This study aimed to enable preschool teachers to comprehend a complete vision of nature-based teaching to teach curricular subjects while introducing nature to children as a source of wonder, value, and endless opportunity for learning. Twenty-five preschool education teachers have participated in a one-week nature-based teaching program. Teachers engaged in hands-on activities including experiments, field trips, observation, play, drama, and online interactive applications. A qualitative case study approach was utilized in this study. Findings revealed that although participating teachers emphasized the value of nature-based teaching, they rarely used nature and natural materials in their activities before involving in this project.

Increasing awareness of invasive species in coastal ecosystems and early detection through DNA-based tools: a study with middle school students

Limited knowledge exists on participant outcomes relating to citizen science programs. Using the ClimateWatch: Scientist for a Day program as a case study, we sought to understand participant behaviors and attitudes post-program, and evaluated the program’s post-engagement initiatives. Phone interviews were conducted with 15 former participants. While participants enjoyed learning and increasing their environmental knowledge, very few of them engaged in the program’s on-going monitoring activities. Lack of motivation and post-program engagement were cited as key reasons for this outcome. Recommendations are provided to improve participant outcomes, and to assist program evaluation research and the program’s scientific engagement aims.

Citizen science engagement: Lessons learned from the ClimateWatch “Scientist for a Day” program

Those who bear the greatest environmental burdens often have the least access to information, and explanations for engaging communities to develop solutions are lacking. We describe, and use a case study to depict, a participatory process of urban academic and community members to co-produce educational and communication tools. Over five years, we interfaced with 763 individuals at eleven events and three times that (n=2,273) through attendees' networks at 109 small group events using snowball methods. The resulting communication tools, paired resources, and mobile dissemination were responsive to residents' circumstances and enhanced their ability to access health protecting information and resources.

Engaged communication of environmental health science: Processes and outcomes of urban academic-community partnerships

As research of benefits and detriments of pesticides and biocides progresses, people's knowledge needs to be updated. This study takes an audience perspective on how practitioners may improve communication. Through online focus group discussions of how and why Danes acquire knowledge of pesticides and biocides, we find that focusing on improving people's knowledge structures, heuristics and self-efficacy may improve people's ability to acquire such knowledge and in turn improve their motivation. This paper provides suggestions for how practitioners may create more effective communication.

Opportunity, motivation, and ability: how to increase people’s knowledge of pesticides and biocides

Advanced information communication technologies (ICT) offer significant benefits to applied communications, including potential cost reductions, service improvements, and expanded natural resource education in an era of ever-decreasing budgets. Limited guidance exists about how to design and implement virtual reality and augmented reality experiences in environmental spaces but clearly it takes time, expertise, equipment, and iterative feedback with experts and users. Our 18-month collaborative development process used best practices, stakeholder involvement, and multimedia teams to create and test augmented reality and virtual reality visitor education about forest management. Based on this effort, we share challenges, opportunities, and ideas to implement ICT in applied environmental education.
