Wavefront sensors are usually based on measuring the wavefront derivatives. The most commonly used approach to quantitatively reconstruct the wavefront uses discrete Fourier transform, which leads to artifacts when phase objects are located at the image borders. We propose here a simple approach to avoid these artifacts based on the duplication and antisymmetrization of the derivatives data, in the derivative direction, before integration. This approach completely erases the border effects by creating continuity and differentiability at the edge of the image. We finally compare this corrected approach to the literature on model images and quantitative phase images of biological microscopic samples, and discuss the effects of the artifacts on the particular application of dry mass measurements.

Noniterative boundary-artifact-free wavefront reconstruction from its derivatives

Underwater imaging faces challenges due to complex optical properties in water. Our purpose is to explore the application of polarimetric imaging in image recovery under turbid water based on deep learning. A polarization camera is used to capture the polarization images of objects under water as datasets. The method used in our study aims to explore a structure and loss function that is suitable for the model. In terms of the model structure, four pairs of models consisting of polarized version and gray version based on the idea of dense U-Net and information flow were proposed. In the aspect of loss function, the method of combining weighted mean squared error with perceptual loss was proposed and a proper set of loss weights was selected through comparison experiments. Comparing the model outputs, it is found that adding polarized information along with the light intensity information to the model at the very front of the model structure brings about better recovering image. The model structure proposed can be used for image recovery in turbid water or other scattering environments. Since the polarization characteristics are considered, the recovered image has more detailed features than that where only intensity is considered. The results of comparison with other methods show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Underwater image recovery utilizing polarimetric imaging based on neural networks

A simple high spectral resolution lidar technique using a multi-longitudinal mode laser is proposed for measuring aerosol extinction and backscattering coefficients. A scanning interferometer having the same free spectral range as the mode spacing of the laser is used to separate Rayleigh from Mie scattering. Scanning the interferometer in the span of one fringe, the lidar signals at the minimum and maximum Mie-scattering transmission are measured. The Rayleigh scattering signal is analyzed from these signals, and the aerosol extinction coefficient is derived. The interferometer transmittance for Mie scattering is calibrated with the reference signals taken with a portion of the transmitted laser beam.

The SWP width increases from 0.33 to 2.061 ns with the single pulse energy increases linearly up to 0.89 nJ while the amplitude remains as a constant. In addition, nonlinear polarization rotation mode-locking fiber lasers with different cavity lengths are constructed to explore the formation conditions of SWP. Generation of a square-shaped pulse in mode-locked fiber lasers with a microfiber-based few-layer Nb<sub>2</sub>C saturable absorber

This study examines the thermal behavior of a laser ignited thermite composed of aluminum and bismuth trioxide. Temperature data were collected during the reaction using a four-color pyrometer and a high-speed color camera modified for thermography. The two diagnostics were arranged to collect data simultaneously, with similar fields of view and with similar data acquisition rates, so that the two techniques could be directly compared. Results show that at initial and final stages of the reaction, a lower signal-to-noise ratio affects the accuracy of the measured temperatures. Both diagnostics captured the same trends in transient thermal behavior, but the average temperatures measured with thermography were about 750 K higher than those from the pyrometer. This difference was attributed to the lower dynamic range of the thermography camera’s image sensor, which was unable to resolve cooler temperatures in the field of view as well as the photomultiplier tube sensors in the pyrometer. Overall, while the camera could not accurately capture the average temperature of a scene, its ability to capture peak temperatures and spatial data make it the preferred method for tracking thermal behavior in thermite reactions.
