Marine Genomics

Brevundimonas mediterranea D151-2-6 is a marine bacterium that has been isolated from 6582-m hadal sediment of the Pacific Ocean. Here, we present the complete genome sequence of B. mediterranea D151-2-6. The genome of strain D151-2-6 is 3,383,373 base pairs in size. It contains one circular chromosome with an average G + C content of 67.41%, 53 tRNAs, and 3270 protein-coding genes. Genomic analysis of strain D151-2-6 revealed that its genome is more highly enriched in genes that encode proteins involved in signal transduction and transcription than any of the other available completely sequenced Brevundimonas genomes. Some of these genes might improve ecological fitness in the hadal extreme environment. Genomic information on B. mediterranea D151-2-6 provides insights into the adaptation strategies and physiological features of Brevundimonas spp. in the hadal environment.

Shewanella sp. Arc9-LZ is a bacterium capable of synthesizing silver nanoparticles in darkness. It was isolated from the marine sediment from the Arctic Ocean (158°01'12"W; 84°28'38"N) collected during the 9th Chinese National Arctic Expedition in 2018. Here, we describe the complete genome of Shewanella sp. Arc9-LZ. The complete genome of Shewanella sp. Arc9-LZ is composed of a circular chromosome of 4,911,031 bp with G + C content of 41.61 mol%. The genome encodes 4040 protein-coding genes (CDSs), 104 tRNAs, and 35 rRNAs. The rRNAs contain 14 copies of 5S rRNA gene, 11 copies of 16S rRNA gene, and 10 copies of 23S rRNA gene. Based on the KEGG, COG, NR, Swiss-Prot, TCDB, and CAZy analysis, a total of 64 genes belonging to 9 kinds are related to the AgNPs synthesis. These genes are involeved in the synthesis of riboflavin, b-type cytochrome, c-type cytochrome, coenzyme Q, NADPH dehydrogenase, cytochrome c reductase, cytochrome c oxidase, nitroreductase, and nitrate reductase.

This report describes the use of pyrosequencing technologies to generate the first comparative analysis of de novo assembled transcriptome data from cultured and wild specimens of the South African abalone. The transcriptome data and database described here provide a significant genomic resource for abalone research. The data set annotated 11,240 genes, which matched genes with known functions in other species. A large number of transmembrane protein domains (4087) that may indicate a high portion of undiscovered gene receptors were identified. Further, we detected an interesting set of transcription factors (516) that are valuable candidates for participating in regulatory events in developmental (such as cell proliferation and differentiation) and reproductive processes.
