Silica glass devices are widely used due to their exceptional physical and chemical properties. However, prolonged usage may result in abrasion and contamination of silica glass devices, adversely affecting the service life. One of the most effective solutions to this issue is surface modification, in which superhydrophobicity with high transmittance and mechanical robustness is highly desired. Inspired by the concept of protective armor, we proposed a novel approach for the direct integration of robust and transparent superhydrophobic structures on silica glass. In this method, microstereolithography synergistic heat treatment processes are used to create a micrometer-scale biomimetic frame on the surface of silica glass and then filled with in situ deposited nanoparticles. The superhydrophobicity of the surface can be obtained through the nanoparticles, and the biomimetic frame can protect the surface from direct contact with external objects to achieve durability. This process allows the preparation of superhydrophobic silica structures on the silica device surface at temperatures below its melting point, which prevents any damage to the devices during the heat treatment. Moreover, up to 90% transmittance does not affect the performance of silica devices. The composite structure maintains a contact angle of over 150° after multiple abrasion tests, verifying the mechanical robustness. This innovative process paves the way for forming a high mechanical robustness and excellent transmittance protective layer on silica glass devices, which expands the application field.

Transparent and Robust Superhydrophobic Structure on Silica Glass Processed with Microstereolithography Printing

The direct writing technology was used to create microfluidic three-dimensional terahertz photonic crystal structures (3D-TPCSs) with a glass cement ink, which demonstrated potentials for various terahertz technology applications. By a simple injection of liquid alloy into them, metallic 3D-TPCSs could be created easily at a low cost to solve the challenges of their creation by current approaches. These microfluidic 3D-TPCSs also possessed a specific capability of changing their terahertz properties in real time without structural changes by injecting fluidic media with different dielectric properties into their microfluidic channels, which endowed them the easy integration into various terahertz devices that require terahertz modulation for a wide range of applications. Due to their microsized channel structure and subsequent reduction of terahertz irradiation absorption by water in them, they demonstrated the potential as real time, nondestructive biological and chemical sensors to detect changes occurring in them in the fluidic media with the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS).

Direct Writing of Microfluidic Three-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Structures for Terahertz Technology Applications

Aqueous Au nanoparticles (NPs) are employed as the building blocks to construct chainlike self-assembly architectures, which greatly enhance the photothermal performance at 808 nm. Biocompatible polypyrrole (PPy) is further adopted as the package material to coat Au NP chains, producing stable photothermal agents. As a result of contributions from chainlike Au, the PPy shell, as well as the Au-PPy composite structures, the capability of photothermal transduction at 808 nm is greatly enhanced, represented by the high photothermal transduction efficiency up to 70%. Primary animal experiment proves that the current composite photothermal agents are efficient in inhibiting tumor growth under an 808 nm irradiation, showing the potentials for in vivo photothermal therapy.

Polypyrrole-Coated Chainlike Gold Nanoparticle Architectures with the 808 nm Photothermal Transduction Efficiency up to 70%

Construction of multifunctional nanocomposites as theranostic platforms has received considerable biomedical attention. In this study, a triple-functional theranostic agent based on the cointegration of gold nanorods (Au NRs) and superparamagnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) into polypyrrole was developed. Such a theranostic agent (referred to as Au/PPY@Fe3O4) not only exhibits strong magnetic property and high near-infrared (NIR) optical absorbance but also produces high contrast for magnetic resonance (MR) and X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging. Importantly, under the irradiation of the NIR 808 nm laser at the power density of 2 W/cm2 for 10 min, the temperature of the solution containing Au/PPY@Fe3O4 (1.4 mg/mL) increased by about 35 °C. Cell viability assay showed that these nanocomposites had low cytotoxicity. Furthermore, an in vitro photothermal treatment test demonstrates that the cancer cells can be efficiently killed by the photothermal effects of the Au/PPY@Fe3O4 nanocomposites. In summary, this study demonstrates that the highly versatile multifunctional Au/PPY@Fe3O4 nanocomposites have great potential in simultaneous multimodal imaging-guided cancer theranostic applications.

Au/Polypyrrole@Fe3O4Nanocomposites for MR/CT Dual-Modal Imaging Guided-Photothermal Therapy: Anin VitroStudy

Traditional fluorescence intensity-based probes face challenges in accurately measuring mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) due to intramolecular fluorescence quenching. In this work, we introduce a novel approach by incorporating quenching moieties within the zwitterionic probe to eliminate self-quenching interference, thus, enabling real-time and precise visualization of reversible MMP changes. We synthesized a zwitterionic fluorescent probe consisting of silicon-rhodamine (SiR) that was hydroxyl-substituted on the bay position of perylene diimides (PDIs) connected via a polyethylene glycol (PEG) linker. The lipophilic cationic SiR facilitates the entry of the PDI into the mitochondria, where the alkaline pH environment (pH = 8.0) ionizes the hydroxyl to a negatively charged species, affecting the quenching efficiency of SiR depending on the distance between the PDI and SiR moieties regulated by the MMP. The rigid aromatic ring of the PDI and strong hydrophobic interactions with the lipid bilayer, along with the inhibitory effect of the negatively charged hydroxyl on internalization, ensure the retention of PDI within the mitochondria. As the MMP decreases, SiR shifts outward, reducing quenching by phenolic anions and restoring fluorescence. Conversely, as the MMP increases, SiR moves inward, intensifying quenching by phenolic ions and reducing fluorescence, enabling reversible visualization monitoring of the MMP. This strategy overcomes the limitations of traditional intensity-based probes, providing a new avenue for reversible monitoring of the MMP.

Low Melting Temperature Gallium–Indium Liquid Metal Anode for Solid-State Li-Ion Batteries

The scalable synthesis of non-precious nanoporous metals, such as nanoporous zinc (NP-Zn), nanoporous iron (NP-Fe), and nanoporous aluminum (NP-Al), is crucial for large-scale production of hydrogen through the reaction between non-precious metals and water. The fabrication of bulk NP-Zn by selective removal of Al from sub-centimeter-sized arc-melted Zn–Al parent alloys through free corrosion dealloying usually takes a few days. Here, we demonstrate that this free corrosion dealloying process can be reduced from a few days to 4 min simply using micrometer-sized Zn–Al powder particles with nominal composition Zn40Al60 atomic % produced by gas atomization as the parent alloy. Reducing the size of the parent alloy significantly enhances the dealloying rate. Furthermore, Al and Zn are phase-separated in Zn–Al powder particles due to the gas atomization process, making removing the sacrificial Al phase easy. We used various techniques, including X-ray diffraction, Xe+ plasma focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP–OES) to thoroughly characterize these materials before and after free corrosion dealloying. The fabricated NP-Zn powder exhibits a hierarchical ligament/pore morphology, with tiny structures with a size of ≈10 nm coming from Zn nanoparticle aggregation during dealloying and large structures in the range of ≈50–200 nm coming from the removal of the sacrificial Al phase. We demonstrate that this NP-Zn can spontaneously react with water at near-neutral pH to produce hydrogen and zinc oxide solid byproducts with a hydrogen generation yield of ≈52% within 60 min.

Rapid Synthesis of Nanoporous Zn Powder by Selective Etching of Al from Micrometer-Sized Zn–Al Powder Particles Produced by Gas Atomization and Its Application in Hydrogen Generation

Despite the great progress of various multifunctional wound dressings, it is challenging to simultaneously achieve complete healing and functional remodeling for diabetic foot ulcers and refractory chronic wounds. Aiming to comprehensively regulate chronic inflammation, angiogenesis, and metabolism processes, herein, a novel kind of dynamic hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel was designed by combining boronate and coordination chemistry. Besides having injectability, self-healing, and detachment properties, dynamic HA hydrogels presented diabetic wound-responsive degradation and controllable H2S release. They could efficiently polarize M1-to-M2 polarization and regulate inflammatory cytokine secretion and multiple inflammation-related mRNA expressions through cooperative actions of reactive oxygen species elimination + H2S release + Zn2+ regulation, thus driving chronic inflammation into the proliferation and remodeling stages. Moreover, the screened lead hydrogel HTZS could regulate angiogenesis-related signaling pathways and metabolism processes to promote neovascularization and mature vessel formation, re-epithelization, high-level collagen-I deposition, and dense hair follicle regeneration, achieving complete healing and functional remodeling in diabetic wounds. Importantly, this work opens a new avenue to design dynamic biopolymer hydrogels for high-performance wound dressing and decipher the key role of multiple orchestrated regulations of inflammation–angiogenesis–metabolism on complete healing and functional remodeling in chronic and diabetic wounds.

Can NiFe-Layered-Double-Hydroxide Catalysts Suppress Carbon Corrosion in Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution?

Covalent-organic-framework (COF) materials with a designable periodic framework have been expected as a kind of promising anode material for potassium ion batteries (PIBs). However, these materials suffer seriously from low capacity, poor rate performance, and slow reaction kinetics during the K-storage process, significantly limiting their widespread applications. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) COF material denoted as CN-COF with a high N content and defined configuration as well as a graphite-like layer stacking structure was developed as a promising anode to realize efficient 3D K-storage performance with enhanced interfacial stability and reaction kinetics via an electrolyte chemistry compatibility strategy. Particularly, a uniform and stable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) with rich inorganic components was controllably formed in the optimized high-concentration THF-based electrolyte (HTE), ensuring satisfactory cycling stability as well as rapid diffusion kinetics. As a result, the synthesized CN-COF material in this optimized electrolyte delivered a high reversible capacity of 385.8 mAh/g at 50 mA/g, and a well-maintained 95.3 mAh/g after 1500 cycles at 500 mA/g. This work provides innovative design and manipulation of the K-storage mechanism via the synergistic effect between nanostructure design and electrolyte chemistry for advanced K-storage materials.
